"She's only a child."

Black velvet draped over the night sky, and the stars lay twisted & warped upon the blanket of darkness. The moon was full and bright, casting inky shadows upon the palace walls. A small child, lost to slumber, sprawled almost clumsily on a bed fit for a king, and plenty of room to spare. She looked so, so small; she was lost in a sea of soft silk sheets. Across the room, two shapes huddled across a homely mahogany table, a small thin lamp illuminating their grave faces. The light spread upon the walls; a worn and treasured banner of a magnificent peacock hung limply.

Muted tones, in a hushed whisper, "She's already lost so much, poor thing."

"Without a leader, this land will fall. Enemies will invade. Innocent blood will be shed. She has to protect the land. There is no-one else fit to do such a job but the rightful Heir."

A beat of silence, and graceless shuffling, soon followed by the slow creaking of old wood. "And I will repeat myself once more. She is just a child. She has gone through enough." the voice became more exasperated, "What the poor child needs is comfort, not more responsibilities." Another awkward shuffle ensued.

"She has the mark of Basra; she is blessed by the Goddess. She is ready."

"She is not!" the voice snapped suddenly, "Serafina is too young. She should be with other children, enjoying youth and, what, playing hide and seek in the gardens! I refuse to let a child rule over a land stained by her parent's blood."

"That is Lady Serafina to you, Agnes." A snarl, then louder, "Do not forget where you stand." The small child stirred in her bed, and the two figures froze. Silence fell like a cloak over the room. Seconds passed, and when they were both sure that she was still asleep, "I recognize that she is a child, but I know she can do this." A softer tone, "I wouldn't be doing this if I wasn't." With nothing more than a soft breeze, the figure rose from their chair and soundlessly left the room.

Tutting quietly to herself, Agnes murmured, "My poor, poor Serafina."

Growing up, Lady Serafina spent most of her free time in the courtyards of her castle-estate. The courtyards happen to house home-bred peacocks, and due to the absence of other children in the palace, she befriended the peafowls instead. For the matter, she loves each and every one of her, "friends". The peacock is her family's sacred animal, which is why they are protected in the courtyards.

I chose a peacock to represent this kalon. The peacock is a symbol of integrity and generally good omens. They symbolise regality, protection and freedom. Character-wise, Lady Serafina doesn't have this freedom; she's confined by her responsibilities. Also, in Babylonia and Persia the peacock is seen as a guardian to royalty, as Serafina guards the land.
