A deafening boom shakes the sleepy town, startling everyone. Panic arises in the villagers as they all hurry to the safety of the town hall. They waited with bated breath, but only peace followed. The door opens as the witch walks into the hall, her silver blue eyes calm. “There is no need to fear, I did a preliminary investigation and this poses no current danger.” Relieved murmurs echo in the hall as the villagers slowly empty out the room, giving thanks to the witch as they leave. One villager, the town leader, stays behind, “Alice, are you certain?” She nods in reply to the question. “Alright… I will leave it up to you once again. Thank you.” The final footsteps exit the hall.
The forest was oddly quiet, like it was holding in its own breath. The soft crunching of leaves under her paws felt like it echoed through the trees. Alice smelled it before she saw it. A few leaves were still smoldering but most were settled charcoal or ash. A rock sits at the center of a small crater. Its cracks glowing like lava. She moved closer expecting to feel heat but the air was cold. Cautiously she makes her way in front of the glowing rock. Her eyes widen as the light dims and brightens. “It’s like… breathing?” Gently she picks it up, intrigue fills her mind. “What… no. Who are you?” Only the sound of wind surrounds her.
She brings the “rock” back to her abode. It’s subtle warmth, comforting for some reason. It feels almost familiar. The door creaks open, the small of herbs hitting her. Carefully she places the “rock” on her bed. “This won’t do.” She quickly grabs her dried foliage and herbs to make a little nest. “This will do for now.” The “rock” fits snuggly. Alice smiles at her handy work before focusing back on the “rock”. She pokes and prod the “rock”. “No response huh.” Alice sighs, “I might have to call a friend who may know more tomorrow…” She watches the moon reach the highest point, “I guess no more work will be done today, can’t be contacting them at odd hours.” Her eyelids grow heavy as she lays down, her eyes focused on the “rock.” A soft whisper, “Good night. Sweet dream, if you even dream.”
The light shines on her eyes, “Uh I forgot to close the blinds…” Alice groans as she lifts herself off the bed. “Let’s get ready then.” She peeks at the “rock” and notices the “breathing” seems to be more frequent now that it’s day. “Huh, you prefer the day? Will we be opposites?” Alice chuckles as she walks past, “like you can understand me…”
“Ahhh much better~” Alice, refreshed now, heads over to the cauldron, placing herbs and minerals in a practiced manner. “There~” The pot shimmers and glows before a face appears on the surface, “Oh goodie, you’re on time! Good morning.” Alice huffs, “Good morning Ophidia.” The voice on the other side chuckles, “Alright alright, you said this was urgent? Show me.” Alice nods and gently picks up the “rock” so it would be in view for Ophidia. “Oh my~ thats!” Silence. Alice, annoyed by the half sentence, pushes, “Don’t leave me hanging! What!?” Ophidia chuckles again, “That’s no mere rock, that’s for sure. It might be an egg.” Alice freezes, “A what?” She grumbles, “what did I bring into my home…” Ophidia clears her throat, “I’m not completely sure, if you observe it for a bit longer, it should become clear.” Alice sighs, “That sounds alright, thank you. I’ll put this rock into observation for a bit.” Ophidia smiles, “From the looks of it, you might get more answers from the summit. Hmm it’s almost that time… Alright, if that will be all, I’m a bit busy at the moment.” Alice nods, “Yeah that will be all.” The face slowly disappears from the surface of the furnace. In the silent abode, Alice whispers to the “rock”, “Well I will be watching over you now. An egg huh.” She places the “rock” back to the little nest she made it. “Let’s see.”
Over the days, she watched as the “rock” wiggled at the sound of music it enjoyed, leaned closer to the sunlight, and learned the sound of her voice. “Well I think, I need to admit… You’re most likely an egg. An interesting one…”
Weeks have passed but the being in the rock egg doesn’t seem to be any closer to hatching. Alice pokes the responsive egg and sighs, “What else do you need?” She has a journey coming up she cannot skip. This egg was not part of the equation when those details were confirmed. With no other option, Alice decides to drag this egg with her though she isn’t sure if it’ll enjoy it…
With everything in order, she meets up with a posh friend named Ione at the harbor. “You finally made it… uh what’s that?” Ione’s eyes glitter with curiosity. “It’s an egg apparently. Sometimes I have my doubts though,” Alice sighs. Ione chuckles as she leads them to her ship, “Well one more passenger won’t hurt especially if it is a fellow that isn’t another mouth to feed~” Alice follows closely as she’s shown around and to her chambers.”This will be your room and your egg’s as well now. Make yourself comfortable, I will be heading back to the deck now.” Alice scans the room, “thank you, Ione. It’s quite nice.” “Of course, for our welcomed guest~ I will be heading back to the deck now. You can find me there if you need anything.” Alice nods, and begins to unpack as the ship starts to sway. “It’s going to be a long journey. I hope my apprentice can hold down the fort while I’m away.” The egg doesn’t respond. “Well, let’s get your nest set up here too.”
Many unnaturally uneventful days pass, when the ship comes to a slow halt. A knock on the door catches Alice’s attention. Ione stands outside, “Good morning~ We’re here.” Alice nods in acknowledgement, “Will be right out.” She turns to the egg resting peacefully in it’s nest. “Perhaps it’s because you’re too comfortable right now…” The egg wiggles frantically as it recognizes Alice’s words. She places the egg in her bag. “Well I guess some sacrifices have to be made…” Alice sighs, looking at her bag that’s now half full. The space should still be enough.
Ione greets her as Alice makes her way onto the deck. “Finally made it out huh~? It was decided my guard Rupert will be joining you. I would love to but he won’t stop nagging me about the danger so here we are~” Rupert huffs, “You can not put yourself in danger like this absolutely not!” Alice nods, who joined her didn’t really matter but having someone experienced at sea accompany her felt more reassuring. “Let’s head in.”
With a splash, the two enter the water. Alice uses her spell to create an air bubble around her and her bag. She looks over to Rupert to see a fish tail. “Ah I see…” at least Alice won’t need to worry about him. He scoffs at her reaction, “Let’s hurry, we don’t have all day. Once the night begins to fall, the waters will get much more dangerous.” They begin to make their way down, the light slowly fading into intense darkness. The further they went, the more the egg shook. “What have you all active like that?” Alice asks the egg, knowing there will be no response. “Huh? Oh you’re talking to the egg. We’re almost there,” Rupert warns them. Alice could barely see in front of her but soon a subtle glow captures her attention, “This is it.” Rupert nods in reply and they begin swimming towards the light. A cave enters their vision. “Let’s hurry, I’m not sure how much time we have left until night,” Rupert urges, “I will also keep watch in case of anything.” Alice thanks him and swims into the cave.
“A visitor, how rare.” Alice stops in her tracks. “Did I startle you, my apologies.” “Who are you?” Alice asks cautiously, scanning her surroundings. “Hmm those of this world call me Stheno…” the voice echoes off the walls. “Are you in here?” “Of course, this is my home after all.” Alice frowns, she didn’t expect this place to have an inhabitant. “Well I’m usually silent but you have brought an interesting creature with you.” Alice glances at her bag. “You know more about this egg?” “Well… not much. I just feel an intense energy condensed in its shell.” “Is that so,,,” “That is all I can offer now. I will be heading back into my slumber.” “WAIT! Do you know how to hatch it?!” Alice asks desperately but only silence follows. With a sigh at the ticking time, she makes her way into the cave until a thick almost jet black kelp forest stood before her. Quickly her bag fills with kelp, covering the top of the egg which has mostly calmed now. “Alright full, let’s head back.”
Back at the entrance, she meets back up with Rupert. “Got everything?” She nods in reply. “Okay lets head back.” As they swim forward, the egg begins to wiggle quickly again. “Huh..?” A strong current pushes them back towards the cave. “This is bad, a sea serpent,” Rupert reports, his eyes narrowing. “I don’t think it sensed us yet…” Alice sighs, at least they’re safe for now. “Let’s wait it out. It’s probably our best bet,” Rupert suggests. “What about nightfall?” Alice asks anxiously. “We have no choice,” He replies with a sigh.
They waited by the cave until the dense currents lightened. “Now,” Rupert calls. They begin the ascent up to the water surface. Thankfully it was uneventful and they made it just before the sun set past the horizon. “Ugh, and they say this trip is supposed to be easy for a witch!” Alice huffs at what her fellow witches told her. Back on board, she notices Ione tense facial expression. “We have to leave now. A sea serpent near the surface is unheard of, unless… they’re on a hunt.” Both Alice and Rupert nod, having a feeling it was them being hunted.
“Finally home… It seems like my apprentice did well maintaining everything. I should offer my thanks next time I see him…” She takes out the dried kelp, glad she decided to do it on the ship. “I definitely did not have the space to dry it all out at home… Hmm?” Alice takes out the egg, “Is it me or did your shine get weaker…” A subtle panic start to rise in her stomach. “Oh no no no…” She definitely has grown attached now, just like when she picked up her apprentice when he got lost in the forest. She quickly tries to contact Ophidia but she was busy and couldn’t respond. With no other choice she heads to the nearest trading town, hopefully to find someone who was an expert with magical creatures and hopefully the eggs too.
Alice finally makes it into the town, when a bulletin catches her eye. “The need for strange eggs to have company, perhaps…” Alice looks down at her bag where the egg is resting. She rushes over to the place noted on the bulletin. However, when Alice placed her egg next to theirs, nothing happened. With both parties disappointed, Alice leaves the worry still etched on her face. She glances at the sky and there isn’t any more time left for her to stay in this town. She makes her way home dejected.
Back home, she places the egg back in the nest carefully, when her cauldron glows. Someone trying to contact her! She quickly gets up and pours the spiritual water into the cauldron. “Hello Hello! Did I manage to reach you Alice?” Alice lets out a sigh of relief, “Ophidia! You just caught me!” “Oh goody~ I missed you at first. What did you want to speak about?” “I need advice on the egg, please.” Alice shows Ophidia the egg. “I’m not too sure but you did take it to the ocean’s trench recently? It might have affected its mana regulation. I can’t be sure from just seeing it here. Bring them to my home and let me take a look.” Alice nods, “I think that would be best. I’ll head over as soon as I can.” With some quick goodbyes Alice sighs, “I hope my apprentice isn’t busy…”
With everything packed again, Alice looks down worriedly at the egg whose condition seems to have worsened. “Safe travels Master,” her apprentice looks at her worried. “I will be fine, thank you again for watching over everything.” They wave their goodbyes and Alice begins her second journey with the egg. She trekked through towns and forests until she’s at a small village residing at the foot of the mountain. She makes her way to a small house at the outskirts of the village, closer to the mountain. Before she could knock, the door swings open. “Welcome Alice. I’m sure your journey was long, please take a rest first.” “Thank you Ophidia…”
Inside, there was freshly brewed tea. “We haven’t seen each other in person since the last all hands on deck witch meeting.” Ophidia pours a cup for Alice as she slides into a seat. “Yeah it has been a while… I have been a bit busy.” Alice sips her cup of tea, before gently taking out the egg. Alice sighs, “How does it look?” Ophidia takes a closer look, examining it closely. “Hmm, yes. Its mana barrier has been damaged but not enough for the being inside to break free. It seems like its stored mana is slowly leaking out and since it's still an unhatched being, they have no way to gather it back. This is quite dire.” Alice stiffens, “Then what should I do?” Ophidia pats her head, and replies, “Luckily, you decided to come and visit me.” She points outside towards the mountain. “We will need to climb up to the summit.”
Day by day, they make more progress to the top. “I’ll make camp for today,” Ophidia offers. Alice nods, “Yeah it looks like the sun is about to set. I’ll go grab some kindling.” The fire crackles in the night, Alice places the egg close to the fire to keep it warm. It wiggles weakly, showing it’s happiness as much as it could. Alice smiles softly watching the egg. “We’re maybe one day out,” Ophidia takes a seat next to her with two cups of tea. “Thanks Ophidia, we’re not far now huh.” They sit silently watching the stars in the sky.
The morning arrives. Their footsteps steady. When the sun was high above their heads, they arrived at the top. “Follow me,” Ophidia says, as she walks over to a cave. “In here.” Their footsteps echo off the walls as they descend down deeper in with a lamp as their only light. Soon the air begins to warm. From a cozy hug to what feels like the inside of an oven, they continue down. Alice casts the spell from before as well, keeping herself cooler and making breathing easier as the air grows heavier. Eventually a warm glow enters her vision, the continue to make their way over until they enter a large cavern. A large pool of lava sit bubbling and boiling. “You have to take out that egg now. It can’t be protected by your magic or it won’t be able to absorb the energy of this place.” Alice nods and takes the egg out of her bag. She places it softly on the ground near the lava. They wait with baited breath for something, anything to happen. The egg begins to gain its glow back, more than that it seems to be glowing more than ever. “Is everything okay?” Alice asks worriedly. “Yes, I think it’s time,” Ophidia replies. A golden crack appears on the egg. Alice’s eyes widened, “The egg!”
The cracks begin to run down the egg and soon a golden light envelopes everything. With the cracking sound coming to a stop, a small magical creature sits at the center. “A dragon?” Alice asks with bated breath. “I think so… how did a dragon egg end up in your backyard?” Ophidia muses. The dragon looks around their deep crimson scales glimmering gold and their golden eyes to match. “Squeak?” the dragon cries as their eyes land on Alice. “Hello there,” she whispers as she picks up the little creature. “I guess calling you the egg won’t work anymore. I’ll call you… Ambrosia.”
