─ #1819

let's set the scene, it's 1981 and the first orbital spacecraft had just been launched. millions of young kids from all over the world were watching in awe, hoping that sometime soon they'd be able to go up to space in a rocket just like the STS-1. one kid in particular was extremely fascinated by the journey, his name was hollis and had he watched the launch with his grandmother and was now counting down the hours until STS-1 returned back to earth. the morning before the spacecraft's estimated return, hollis' grandmother made moon and spaceship pancakes, adding slices of "moon cheese" and "alien eyes" to fancy up the dish. she poured a glass of milk for herself and a set down a mug of hot cocoa for hollis. the news was on, and while it was hardly readable under all the sticky notes hollis placed for his countdown, she could still make out some words. boy found the television blinked as she pulled out a box of donuts. "hollis, dear, come down!" hollis' grandma called, placing the donuts in the middle of the table. "i made a special breakfast!" no answer. it wasn't unusual for hollis to not come at first call, so she didn't worry. he was probably still fast asleep, dreaming of aliens and spacecrafts. instead of going to wake up her grandson, the elderly woman turned up the television a few notches and sipped her milk. fourteen...male...found...critical condition "well that's terrible, poor boy. she mumbled. she glanced up at the clock and sighed. hollis had still not come down, it had been well over five minutes. "hollis, come down now please." again, no answer. now, his grandmother began to worry. hollis was a light sleeper, so after hearing her first hollers he would have made his way down by now just like he did every morning. just as she was about to head up the stairs, a sound came from the old rickety door that held their house closed. knock. knock. she froze, nobody ever came by unless it was hollis' friends or the mailman, and it was too early for either to show. she pressed her hand against the door's rusty hitch and held her breath. again, someone connected their fist to the door, this time harder. KNOCK. KNOCK. a male voice followed the knocks. "madame mahoney? it's the new york children department, we know you're in there. please open." she opened the door, coming face to face with two men, a lady, and low-and-behold, her grandson. "hollis!" her hand flew up to her mouth. hollis stood beside the lady, his hands cuffed and a smug grin in place of the serious frown. his clothes, which were usually neat and pristine, were wrinkled and covered in muck. "i-i thought you were upstairs! where were you?" she questioned. hollis shrugged. "i was buying you roses." awh his grandma thought. "no, he fought the STS-1 astronaut's son for front row tickets to the return." the lady snapped.

"how does the moon trust the sun to come up every night and take its place?" i said, playfully pushing my sister as she struggled to get on the roof. i hid a bought of laughter as she shot me with eye daggers. "hell if i know." my sister replied. "it's just science, nehmu, you don't need an answer for everything." i swear, she acts like my questions could kill if i tried. shoving my face with potato chips covered up the spike of pain that her word's left. "come on neh, don't be like that." of course, only my sister could see through me. "like what, hana?" a star passed overhead, catching my attention immediately. "fine, be like that." hana shrugged as she peered over the roof's ledge. "anyways...i have an idea. do you trust me?" she wiggled her eyebrows viciously. yes, i do. my brain screeched. "hmm, i don't know, hana."
