Amenemsou looked out onto the horizon.
The vast expanse of ever shifting sand stared back at them. This was their home, a mirror image to their fire. The familiar heat which should have been and had been a comfort for decades, stifled.
There was a certain affinity which no other could understand. Their love for the desert was undoubtedly true in all aspects. The nature of the desert was harsh, and yet life continued to grow through the struggle. But.
A disturbance arose. Drought was inevitable in the desert, but come spring. The oasis filled with water to keep the balance and brought forth life into the world.
As years passed, the droughts were longer. Starving all who waited for the precious liquid of existence. From the smallest beetle to the tallest tree. Humans had begun to take more of the Earth than was needed. But life is smart. It adapted to the change and continued on.
Soaring through the skies, the sun warmed their inner fire. The edges of the desert seemed to grow bigger by the day. Plants that kept sands at bay were withered or severed by human hands. At first, they were joyous. The desert was growing, they could show the world the wonderful secrets hidden within. Share the treasure that was their home. They would not understand the consequences for many years.
It was a slow realization. Bones rather than animals. Withered husks rather than fruit. His home was growing and dying. Slowly seizing the lands surrounding it.
The desert thrived on change. Dunes built and blown away. Scorching heat by day and freezing cold by night. Humans thrive on greed and even the desert has limits.
They wondered when there would be nothing left but sand.
