"fedya, are you awake?"

abel heard his brother grumble and turn over towards his direction. a tired sigh escaped his mouth, and abel knew that fedya was now awake.

"mmmm, i am now," he murmured. "what is it?"

"i heard footsteps," abel said. "i'm scared."

"no one's out there," fedya yawned. "and if there is someone, they're not out to get you."

"b-but what if they take me away from you?" abel's voice was laced with genuine fear. "or-or they take you away?"

fedya sat up, and let out a sigh. he slid out of his bed and walked over to abel's. the older boy hopped into bed with abel, and slung his arm around the worried boy.

"listen, no one is gonna take you away again," fedya reassured his little brother. "you're going to be okay, i promise you. do you want me to sleep next to you?"

abel nodded slowly, and fedya snuggled under the covers, close to abel. having his brother close to him made him feel safer, but it didn't completely extinguish the fear. slowly, abel fell asleep.

"your daughter has PTSD," the professional woman explained.

"she-she what?"

"she has post-traumatic stress disorder,"

"yes, yes, i know what that means!" abel's mother snapped. "but how? how does she have PTSD? nothing happened to her!"

"i'm not a girl," abel muttered under his breath.

"you don't know that for sure ma'am," the psychologist said. "she may have experienced something traumatic. even little things such as bullying can be traumatic to children and teens."

"mom can i go outside and sit in the waiting room with fedya?" abel asked. he just wanted to get out of the room. he didn't want to listen to the doctor-lady diagnose him.

"no, you're going to sit right here and tell me what happened to you," his mother demanded.

"nothing happened!" abel snapped back.

"has she lost a loved one recently?" the psychologist asked.

"well- yes," abel's mother's voice cracked. "her little brother- he passed away on her birthday- christmas."

"was she close to him?"

"well both of them were- her and her other brother. they were inseparable."

"that can traumatize her, losing a loved one."

"but then why isn't fedya traumatized?" his mother questioned.

"people handle loss in different ways."

"mom can we get mcdonald's?" fedya asked.

rain dripped down the windows as the family drove down the wet highway. abel traced the raindrops with his fingers, blinking slowly as it slid off the car window.

"sure," she sighed. "what do you want?"

"i want a chocolate milkshake and fries," fedya stated. "abel, what do you want?"

"her name isn't abel," his mother reprimanded.

"yes, his name is abel," fedya countered.

abel cringed. he appreciated fedya standing up for him, but it made him sick to his stomach. he felt sick hearing his mother so defiant, so against calling him abel.

"i'm not fighting with you," his mother hissed.

the rest of the car ride through mcdonald's and to home was silent. no one spoke at all. abel liked the quiet.

"merry christmas!"

abel had a fake smile plastered on his face as fedya handed him a small box. it seemed light. he dropped his fake smile for a moment, not caring that his family had their eyes burning into him. slowly, he opened it. he was gentle with it.

inside the box was a small piece of paper. on it, 01/9/10 was written in fedya's hand writing. abel looked up, confused. fedya had a stupidly big smile on his face.

"what does this mean?" abel asked, picking up the piece of paper and waving it in the air.

"that's your first appointment at the gender clinic," fedya said with a cheeky smile.

abel flung himself at fedya, wrapping his older brother in a big bear hug. tears slid down his face. while the rest of the family wasn't supportive of the idea of abel being trans, they still cheered for him, glad to see him happy.

"god i hate needles," fedya squeaked.

"c'mon, you gotta watch!" abel giggled. "i'm gettin' me some boy juice!"

"you're so stupid," fedya laughed.

abel cleaned up the needle and screwed the cap on his testosterone bottle. he tossed the needle and sat himself next to fedya and grinned.

"you're my biggest supporter," abel commented, leaning back. "i really couldn't ask for a better brother. like seriously, who else gets a rad brother who's a cop, has a dog, and supports his brother's transition, even when we were kids? it really doesn't get better than that."

"eh, that's all in your head," fedya shrugged. "you think i'm cool, but i'm really just an average joe. plus i'm not really likable because i'm a cop."

"oh shut up with that oink oink nonsense," abel punched fedya lovingly in the shoulder, laughing. "you're rad as hell, and don't you forget it."

Image
"you really are a dork," fedya grinned.

"you know fedya, if it weren't for you, i-i wouldn't have gotten over remmi's death," abel said.

"i never asked because, well, i always felt like it was... too soon to ask," fedya sighed. "but what did you see that day? what happened?"

abel went silent, and looked at the floor.

"you don't have to answer me if you don't want to," fedya said, his voice soft. "i don't want to make you upset."

"no-no it's okay, really, it's okay," abel said, looking up at his brother. "i don't feel like its-its fair to keep it from you after all these years. he was your brother too."

"and- why were you always scared about being taken away?" fedya asked.

"well that's part of remmi's story, shut up and let me tell you, doofus," abel tried to smile and lighten the mood, but it was obvious that the two were already emotional. abel sighed and looked down again.

"help!"

abel's throat was raw from screaming. even though the paramedics were already there, he couldn't stop screaming. he kept screaming for help. remmington wasn't moving. unfamiliar people came and picked up the little boy, and put him on a stretcher. they wheeled him into the ambulance and closed the doors.

"where are you taking him?" abel screamed. "give him back! give him back!"

abel wiggled out of the grips of the people holding him, trying to give him physical comfort. he scrambled towards the large vehicle, tripping on the wet grass. he made his way over in a panic. the men who had taken remmi tried to push him away from the ambulance doors.

"where are you going with my brother?" abel yelled. "give him back! he's not yours!"

strong hands gripped his shoulders and he looked up to see his mother pulling him back. her eyes were filled with tears. why was she crying? remmi was going to be okay! there was no reason to cry! abel tried to fight against his mother's grip to go get remmi, but he couldn't break free.

โœฉโœฉโœฉ

his chest hurt from yelling and screaming at the unknown people. abel was sat down on the curb, and an unfamiliar lady was sitting beside him. she had given him a blanket. he didn't know why, but he appreciated it, since he was cold.

"how old are you sweetie?" she asked in a sickly sweet voice, it sounded forced.

"i'm twelve," abel said quickly. "where is remmi going?"

"what did you get for christmas sweetie?" the woman ignored his question.

"stuff. today's my birthday too," abel didn't care about this woman's questions. "where. is. remmi. going?"

โœฉโœฉโœฉ

"i always thought that, they like, took remmi away," abel explained. "i was old enough to understand, but i was in shock. i just saw my little brother die, and i didn't want to believe he was dead. i thought they-they stole him."

"jesus," fedya breathed out. "that's rough. i can see why you hated your birthday and christmas for years."

"well, you did too," abel said.

"yeah, but it was just because remmi died. i-i didn't experience what you did," fedya sighed. "i'm so sorry. that must have been- terrifying."

"oh believe me, it was," abel said. "but, it was in the past. anyways, do you want some cake?"

"honestly, i could go for some cake right now," fedya said, standing up.

the two made their way into the kitchen. abel cut two pieces of cake, one for him, and one for his brother.

"i think your piece is bigger than mine," fedya said, eyeing the cake skeptically. "that's not fair."

"yeah and you're probably adopted, so be quiet," abel laughed.
