what is their relationships to the masks?:
Clap. Clap. Clap. Clap.
Each velvet chair was forgotten as the audience stood. It was like a wave erupted as every visitor in the theater hall clamored to their feet, bringing their hands together. Whistles and yells rocketed through the large building. Then people brought out flowers they had hidden in their bags to throw onto the stage.
Every one of the ballerinas wore a smile. Their feet were sore but their hearts were warm. They huddled together in the middle of their platform, for that was the only area they could be seen together. The rest of the stage was covered in delicately painted props. They were performing The Nutcracker. Hoards of army mice terrorized the dancers to their left, but to their right sat a crackling fireplace with a large tree. Behind them was an incredible snowy scene. It looked so realistic that some young children tried to grasp snowflakes after the show.
Doesnβt she look beautiful Adonis? A small spot of white light appeared directly in front of the mural.
She always has. A black spot formed next to it, flashing slightly as a gravelly voice sprung from within. Slowly the lights grew. First a starry leg appeared, then a flowing mane of hair and a bright tail. A twinkling laugh came from the lighter kalon as she completed forming. Her friend had a leg on his head and his tail sat in between his eyes. He grumbled to himself before returning to the black ball. After a few seconds he reappeared with everything in place. Donβt laugh Astria. His dark tone of voice made the female stop immediately.
Hush you. She chastised Adonis before turning her back to face the ballerinas again. Thornless roses were still being thrown onto the stage while the dancers waved, cheeks rosy and breath warm. Even though they had danced for a little over an hour, their tutus still perched perfectly on their hips and their delicate hairstyle full of more hairspray then hair hadnβt moved or fallen.
Suddenly a voice erupted from the loudspeakers. The manβs tone was nasally and high pitched so a couple delicately gloved audience members covered their ears. βLadies and gentlemen, the New York Swans thank you for coming to their performance of The Nutcracker tonight. It was truly lovely. Why donβt we give them another round of applause?β The entire theater hall rose once more to cheer and clap before quieting again.
βLovely. You have all been a wonderful audience, but now it is time to give names to the faces you have watched dance tonight. First we have Annie Grace Brinsfield who played our lovely Clara Stahlbaum. Please give some cheers!β His voice squeaked on the last word and the microphone crackled and squealed for a second before quieting.
Adonis and Astria both glowed brightly as a brown haired young woman came to the front. A little golden tear rolled down the pale creatureβs muzzle. A large smile covered her face. The black form wasnβt smiling however, but his entire stature had changed, showing he was clearly proud. Oh just smile for once you cold hearted thing. Astria seemed to shine brighter than any light on Annie Graceβs face.
But suddenly the sour smell of smoke billowed into the auditorium. The two cloudy figures seemed to freeze before flying directly over to the woman. Their forms shrunk as they each sat on one of her shoulders. Adonis sat on the right, Astria on the left. They looked at each other before looking at Annie Grace who was frozen in fear.
A section of the stage crumbled as the fire formed from below. Some dancers fell but others jumped to safety. That was when the entire theater hall was filled with screams of terror. The ancient curtains were the first to ignite, the fire traveling quickly up the thick red fabric. It felt like the inferno was starving. It took over everything in a matter of seconds. People ran for their lives and dancers jumped from the stage. Annie Grace was still frozen.
Astria whispered into the womanβs ear. The girlβs thoughts played out like a book so that the creatures could see if they were making any headway.
I should see if anyone is stuck. She had taken Astriaβs suggestion immediately with no hesitation. The starry form smiled tearfully.
Thatβs my girl.
No, I should run. Astriaβs smile fell and her eyes turned to blades as she looked over at Adonis who was talking directly into Annie Graceβs ear.
What are you doing? Her voice was more sharp then it had been before.
Iβm saving her life Astria. Let me do our job. He started to whisper to the young woman faster and louder. She began to run towards the large doors.
No! The light creature turned back towards the womanβs ear. Stay and help people Annie Grace! But it didnβt change anything. Adonis had filled her with the desire to survive, there wasnβt anything Astria could do now. When she looked over at the other shoulder her partner had already disappeared. She kissed her girl on the cheek before closing her eyes and going home.
As soon as she had fully returned she slammed her mask off to become her visible form. βWhat was that, Adonis?β She yelled as she turned towards him. Her fur stood straight up and she paced out of anger. Adonis had already taken his mask off so when Astria took a swipe at him, he jumped backwards knowing she could really hurt him if she tried.
βI saved her life.β Was all he said before walking off. Now the light creature was fuming.
βNo you didnβt. You probably just killed many others.β Her face knotted up.
βOur job is to protect Annie Grace. Everyone else is not our problem.β He spoke simply, seeming tired.
βNo, we are her moral compass.β She paused, relaxing slightly, βShe was selfish tonight, and that blood is on your paws Adonis, not mine.β
