Coding A Creature Creator

Hi there! Im not sure if its ok to ask here but...
I am trying to code a web game rpg type style where the first feature I am releasing is a creature creator... I am stuck. I tried using canvas but I just cant figure it out. Anyone able to point me in right direction of how to learn this?

I look at Wolvden, Flight rising, even neopets had a simple creature creator... how?? Thank you !
