Ooh- I thought that was the original concept! The idea of customs as pets is interesting indeed... but I like having just a character too.
Maybe when an admins steps down they receive a custom pet of their character to remember their service by? Or maybe after a year (rounded down) of having a character, they get a custom of it on the site's anniversary? Either way I support separating customs and "mascot characters."
If we make it two different "rewards" for good admin-ship, then we can give customs to mods, admin, and even users who help the site a lot.
NPC-type mascot characters, then, would be for admin, coders, anyone who makes news posts/runs large events/etc who needs to be easily identifiable, and doesn't necessarily mean that that person is a great fantastic person (which will be useful if we bring people onto the team to run events or whatever, who would ideally have a mascot, but aren't necessarily long-term helpers).
Customs would also then be good for running kickstarters, fundraisers, etc., as basically the customizable equivalent of an OMG-so-rare.
