Hippogriff Haven - An In-Progress Game I'm Making!

Welcome to the Haven, a place where Hippogriffs of all coats abound - and a wide array of plucky Patrons, which perhaps you'll become one!

This is a project that I've been working on / off in my free time since 2023, and it is finally coming into what I would consider close enough to start and ready for closed alpha testing!

So what will you be able to do? Lots, hopefully! Right now I have these systems all designed and ready for testing; with of course more always an option!

Screenshots

Image
This screenshot highlights the 'hub' for your city- where you can earn levels, keep your citizens happy through doing daily quests, and even collect idle oats (the game currency) for doing so! You can also give your whole city a description, sort your citizens into different town districts, and edit and rename these districts and your city- along with being able to customize the little icons! It also has a robust search feature to help you to find that one sneaky little guy easy.

Image
But how do you collect hippogriffs? The main way will always be through the infinity gate, a mysterious portal where hippogriff eggs from other realms arrive. I suggest you check out this page for yourself- I think it's quite neat! And we've got a darkmode built in already too :3

Image
And what about other things to do? I've got a few done so far! Here you can assign your hippogriffs to do some tasks for you, such as Farming and Gathering being almost completely idle - for Farming, just make sure they've got resources to work with and they'll plant and harvest as you need them to! For Gathering, you'll need to check in every once in awhile to make sure that they haven't stalled and are wasting time- but they'll stay in one of the regions of the world and gather items as needed when they aren't!

Crafting, dyeing, and cooking work differently in that you have more slots to cook recipes in the more champions - your special citizens you've designated to help you- you have assigned to them. The higher level these champions are, the faster recipes will be completed as well!

Not sure who to assign to a job? At the bottom of the page it will show you a list of your champions that are unemployed - great for making sure you're on top of managing things!

Image
Prefer idle collecting instead? That's okay too! The color guide is a page that lists your progress towards completing your on-hand collection of all sprites in the game. You can even sort by what colors are the furthest or closest to completing! And what's with those elements and base colors - well, for breeding of course! Some colors are only obtained through hybrids, such as the rose color being a red rose (gotten from the gate) being bred with a blue-base hippogriff making blue roses!

Image
And what can you do with your hippogriffs? Just about whatever you want! You can rename them, add apparel or markings to make them unique, give them a bio, or even give them items from your inventory to hold onto as trinkets! You can also manage them to make them new champions if you have the space (my champion list is unfortunately full- maybe next city level, Landin!), breed them, or, if your tired of them- exile them to the wilds! There is also a helpful log that keeps track of some of the life history the hippogriff has gone through, such as where they were first obtained and previous names.

Image
And here is Landin sporting some cute new feathers and little devil horns :)

I have more to show off (and more to work on...) but thank you so much for taking the time to read however far you did! I am excited to finally see this project be at a form I can show off to others!

Why don't I show off how adopting and growing your first citizens works! Once you've visited the infinity gate after you've made your city and selected your patronage (you'll see more on that soon)- you can click on any of the eggs you see to adopt them! You have a starting limit of being able to hold up to 5 eggs at a time, with an additional egg slot as you level up through civilization levels (although for testing, we've only set up to level 20!)

Image

You can take a look at Averi here!
So now you've adopted an egg- they'll need to grow after all! All eggs will hatch into keets in 12 hours, provided you do nothing with them and let them incubate on their own. Once they are a keet, they no longer take up space in your slots- so feel free to adopt more! Additionally, certain details of eggs are unknown- such as the specific variation of a color they may be (Looking at you, copper!), the eventual gender of the pet, and crucially- what pose they may end up as! Poses refers to the different 'variations' of hippogriff- be they standing, flying, sitting, laying down, or forever youthful! Some poses are rarer than others- for example, the Forever Young ones may be a bit harder to acquire!

Image
Perhaps you'd like to have your eggs hatch a little faster- through cooking (and a bit of effort- after all, it can't be too easy!) you could acquire some delicious grow-fast soup to hatch your egg before you know it! Just click on it from your inventory to use.

Image
Image
And just like that- Averi's now a keet! But this hippogriff isn't done growing yet- they need another 12 hours (or, if you're impatient, an earthy grow-fast soup to skip the timer). However, you now have a bit more information about them than before- their gender, and if they are going to be a pose 1 or or 6 or another pose can be figured out from here! Pose #1 and #6 are special in that they have a different version of the keet form than the others- and, since they are rarer, it makes it a bit easier to tell if you'd like to keep this citizen on or not!

Image
And now that Averi is fully grown, we can see and do everything we'd like to them! For example, we can now dress them up, breed them, or give them trinkets! Additionally, we could make them a champion if we'd like. What about exiling? Currently that is on a different timer than growth- all that you need to do is have the citizen in your civilization for an hour before you can exile them!

------------

Also perhaps you want to get some more eyes on the project? Perhaps yoink this button I made that I have in my signature :)

So what else is there to do? Your basic task beyond collecting and customizing your citizens is to grow a strong civilization! This can be done by completing long term or daily goals to earn civilization experience - basically, by just playing the game and completing achievements! I've not done too much for the fine tuning of which achievements and how many points - yet - but I have done some basic frame working to get the system completely functional! This first screenshot is the level page, where you will see various long term goals in different categories. Worried about leaving your achievements to rot and forget to claim them? Worry not! In your user sidebar there will be a notification on your EXP bar whenever you have achievements to claim.

Image
And these are your short term goals- yet again not much balancing done but we will get there; it's all able to be tweaked in the admin panel after all! These are refreshed for you daily, where you can claim a new batch of ten to complete and earn extra oats and experience- along with increase the overall happiness of your citizens for fulfilling their requests. If you manage to complete all ten before your next rollover- even better! You'll unlock a bonus of extra oats and experience, and gain an extra 5 tasks to complete at your leisure. Unable to complete tasks within 24 hours - no worries as well! You can leave tasks to be completed on your own scale, and re-roll them whenever you're comfortable in your progress.

Image
So what's all that happiness for anyways - it's to keep your farmers working overtime to produce you more oats, of course! Your city will produce a modest sum of oats depending on your level every 30 minutes, and you can collect them at your leisure. The happier your civilians are, the higher an amount of oats they'll produce - up to 250% of your base rate if you stay on top of their happiness! Can't keep or don't want to keep them happy? Don't worry- you'll always produce your base rate of oats, so long as you check in to claim from your silo as it fills up.

Image
Want to manage your civilization to show its growing strength? You can change it! You can change the name for a sum of oats, and change the title at any time- and as you level up, you earn different titles!

Image

And what of those icons? You can change them too! These icons show up on various pages, such as in the breadcrumb links or in the title on your main landing page- with over a hundred to choose from you're sure to find something that captures the vibes you're going for!

Image

And don't forget some quick stats- how many citizens you have, how many champions you have, and how many items in your inventory are just fun little tidbits to keep track of as you expand to a metropolis. :)

Why don't we check out the world to explore today! When you navigate to the world map, you'll see an overview of the entire haven- with various regions that you can click and interact with to visit. You can either click the locations on the map itself, or use the quick travel links at the bottom of the page to go to where you need.

Not sure where to click on the map to go to certain areas? Clicking toggle map style will change the map to show these areas in highlighted regions - and it reveals that there is quite a lot of the world still left to expand into!

Image

Now, what's with those icons by the Calopis Range and Piscauna Lake? Why don't we visit them to see more!

Image

As we arrive in the Calopis Range, we're met with an overview of the area and a little splash art and lore tidbit of it, along with the setup of our Gathering Camp. Here we can see that our champions have been hard at work and have collected a plethora of items- and that they seem to be all taking a break from the ! icons next to their info. Perhaps we should assign someone else to help out with the task-

ImageImage
Abby, it looks like you'll be unemployed no longer! Time to get to work and gather some items for the civilization to turn into lots of goodies. Once we've assigned Abby to the job, we see that she's now at the bottom of the page working hard- and added to the second page of our worker list. Now, we should check in with our previously stationed champions to get them back to work.

Image

Image

Gregory here is now back to working with a simple click! He's also gathered a pretty nice array of items since the last time we checked in on him- why don't we collect them and put them into our inventory to use for our next task. And if you'd rather just pick up everything all at once- just click the "Collect All Items" button at the top to gather everything and take it back to your city!

Checking back in on our gatherers in the Job Center we find that a day later and they've been extra busy - with 464 items ready to collect- but of course they all are ready to be checked in on again! We'll go ahead and gather the loot they've found and take a look at the crafting station to see what we can make with all of this stuff.

Image
I've got a large array of champions working for me there, but they won't do any tasks unless I assign them one- so we're only at level 2 for the recipes our crafting workshop can make. Let's hop in and take a look at the whole workshop.

Image
The art above is a placeholder- we're still ironing out the details on it- but the code and functionality is all ready to go! Assigning champions to work in your crafting workshop is the same system as assigning them as gatherers- or any other job in the Haven. The same easy search bar and filtering is available to you wherever you need it! Once you assign a champion to work in crafting, they open up a new slot on your crafting benches to assign a task to. If you need a job done quickly, you're free to assign as many crafters to the task as you want!

Image
Recipes also have a robust search system - if you want to find something that you're able to craft quickly, don't fret- the compass tool button allows for you to specifically filter only recipes that you have all the ingredients for. This tool also applies to the cooking system as well- and is easy for us to expand to any future item recipe jobs that champions may have!

ImageImage
Clicking craft on a recipe brings up the recipe modal, where you can view its information and select which champion you want to craft it for you! Selecting higher level champions means that your task will be completed faster- and worry not about a possibility of needing to craft 100 stacks of items to get those levels- assigning a champion to a job earns them champion EXP that applies to levels that stay with them, no matter the job they change into later!

We'll go ahead and assign Grace this task, since they are our highest leveled champion we have at the Crafting Workshop- and are able to make this the fastest!

ImageImage
Grace is now busy making that red dye for us. She'll be unable to be removed from crafting until it is completed, or we cancel the recipe. Cancelling returns all the items to us and only costs us our time - so if you mis-click or change your mind halfway through a recipe, you can always take back your items as long as the recipe is still being made!

ImageImage
Once a recipe is done, the page automatically refreshes and you can collect it and put it in your inventory! Now comes the hardest part- we just need to find a use for all this red dye...

Image
Now that we've got some dye, why don't we wander over to the clothier to get some goodies to dye with! This fine feathered patron manages a small shop on the outskirts of Caelurbis, and was used to making clothing for patrons before- well, before all this happened. They've found it's better to re-skill and make clothing for Hippogriffs now- so we're in luck!

Image
However all of their apparel seems to be lacking in color lately... Good thing we've got some dye at least! We'll go add some of their items to our shopping basket and get them purchased. It's super easy to buy multiples of whatever you'd like- just click on the item to add more of it to your basket! No need to click and purchase each item individually.

Image
Image
Image

Now that we're back at our inventory, we can check over what we've bought. Ignore the collection of devil horns all all colors- we went on a bit of a hoarding spree :)

Image

From here if we wanted we could directly apply this apparel to any of our hippogriffs, right from the inventory- just by clicking on it! There is even a preview tool built in to show how it would look on them and a way to search through all of our tabs and collection to find just who we are looking to apply to. You can also visit their pages individually to apply apparel- but we'll get to that another time.

Image
To use the dye that we've made to make our bows not all white, we'll need to visit the dye pot! We can find some quick overview information about it from the Job Center, or we can visit the world map to find it's link- or you can bookmark it- whichever you prefer!

Image
Unlike crafting, you can only assign one champion to the dye pot- and their corresponding level determines how many extra slots you will have to queue up tasks! Since there is only one pot to dye from, all tasks must be done in the order they were received.

Image
For example, each dye task added to the queue adds another five minutes to the timer- meaning that if you wanted to use two slots, you'd be waiting 10 minutes for both to complete. We have to give some time to clean out the pot and tidy up after all- we aren't looking to do any tie-dye today.

ImageImage
Here is the dye and apparel selection modals - once you click to select your items, these pop out and provides you an easy prompt to choose which dye you'd like to dye with! And yes, indeed- you can dye clothing that has already been dyed! If you ever want to swap something to a new color, all you have to do is procure the dye bottle for it. There is currently 20 different dye colors that items can come from, and to make the whole system consistent- I've designed a base hex color system and shading guidelines to make sure that the apparel all looks visually similar in the same color range!

Image
Once you've selected your items, the page itself changes to reflect what the recipe will make, and how long it will be until your item is created. All that's left is to click dye or cancel and select something else instead!

ImageImage
And now that our item has finished dyeing, we can collect it and apply it to one of our champions!

Hello there! We’re night quite ready to do testing just yet- we’ve got some background packages that we’re working on updating and a teeny tiny amount of art left to add- but feel free to scope out the site and join the official discord for a chance to get one once we’re ready!
