They're not used as tokens yet, but I assume they will be later.

How rare is it to get pets from the digging site instead of crystals I’m yet to get a single one

I think it's really a matter of luck, I've got two and some people have gotten way more or way less so it's hard to tell

Will the crystals be used for anything other than axolotls? I've been saving them but idk if it'll still be available later

{oh definitely! I'm guessing the crystals will be at least one trade-in at the cave back / '???' within a few days [as well as the journal pages], and I imagine they'll be used for some other trading too! Hang on to them :3c}
