Why do the gifts stay for 24 hrs? And not stay there like last year?

You may be thinking of the Halloween and Easter events - the gifts stick around for most of the event duration during those times, but for the advent calendar we get one different gift on each day. ^^

on the 18th, older pets are re-released from their newborn stage at random. Every user gets completely different pets; You can end up with anything from a main list pet to a 2010 rare ^_^
