I think it's because there aren't as many people who want to trade for bulk tokens, since there weren't a lot of "in demand" pets this event.

man i remember (during previous events) when the trades board was full of people offering c$ for tokens and now it's the reverse

As for token hype, yeah there doesn't appear to be as much this year and more people are collecting the animal eggs this year. Some are also pretty scarce.
