Wait, i just found this, could this be a clue?Tenebria spots Simon and Mason huddled together, pointing at poorly drawn doodles of unknown creatures as they whisper.

since mason seems SO obvious, are we really sure he is to blame? such as in scooby-doo and other mysteries, the obvious and first conclusions are typically red herrings.
so…what if SERAPHINE is the culprit??
now, bear w me here…
what if sera is somehow not who they say they are — perhaps a cryptid in disguise or something else from the portal? they are a new recruit — perhaps the cryptids/forest/cave animals were getting fed up with the glampers, and sent someone to try and scare them away. it could explain why they are SO intent on insisting that cryptids aren’t real. perhaps SERA lured cirrus away, mixed up the trail signs themselves (i believe THEY were the ones found in possession of the yellow paint), and used the getting lost story as an alibi. i’m going to keep looking into this, but i do think it is a theory to consider.
edit to recap findings/promote theory:
MOTIVE: scare away glampers/find ways to get them to better their camping practices
CLUES: yellow paint used for trail signs; orange fur found near a trail sign that eventually led to be misleading; belongings that were most likely cirrus’s found near the watchtower (the stones from andrea, broken bracelet); mason “has his suspicions about Seraphine’s disappearance” (mason supposedly can tell a real cryptid from a fake — does he recognize sera as such??); moose doesn’t trust a ranger, but hasn’t mentioned which one, but does mention ranger gear being sus (the paint, perhaps?); ROPE found by the tower — used to get into the extremely high bear-safe bags, like cirrus’s?; rusty spoon????; can visibly see caves & the ominous shadow under the lake, with seemingly no concern abt either; very knowledgeable abt the forest as mentioned by moose — how would they get lost?; knows a lot abt mushrooms, also mentioned by moose — a reference to the caves from the past event we are abt to explore?; she also has a FOSSIL IN HER FUR, just like a previous cat from that event, and as another nod to the time-travel aspect of the caves
sorry for not including direct quotes, i’m on mobile and don’t feel like taking all that extra time lol

I like that idea, I think you might be on to something. I have a few thoughts. The motive sounds like Mason’s motive; I don’t believe Seraphine ever complained about the campers at the glampground. I can’t fathom what their motive for kidnapping Cirrus would be, but maybe it was actually a friendly gesture that we only think was a kidnapping? Seraphine’s story also corroborates what the Apple cabin found in their investigation in the woods, so they had to be near the berry trail for at least some of the time. Why go to all of the effort to doctor trail signs just to convince us that they were actually missing? We would’ve believed them even if they didn’t go through all the effort, so I don’t personally think that’s a good motive. Also, Seraphine doesn’t walk oddly, and has no motive to walk oddly.
Personally, I think Mason was behind Seraphine’s initial disappearance, but I also think that’s a bit too obvious for it to be the whole story. Did they run into Cirrus but neglect to mention it? Did they see any cryptid? They must already know about the cave. What if Seraphine is secretly a cryptid themselves?!?!
Because Seraphine only mentions being missing for one night, I think Seraphine got lost long after Cirrus disappeared. While Cirrus disappeared in the middle of the night according to thermals, Seraphine woke up and went out on trails at dawn before the cabins woke up, followed the faulty signs through a new area, finally realized they were lost, tried to head back using the compass but got more lost, night fell, they camped in place, found the lakeshore at dawn (probably using the rising sun to find north), and headed back before the campers woke up on the second day after the disappearance of Cirrus.
I think there is something in the lake which isn’t Tessie, and there are many different cryptids living in the woods.
