XXXXXXXXRodents, Soricomorphs & Lagomorphs

    Squirrels - typically grey, can be red or black, 23-30 cm in length, found in forested areas worldwide, lives in hollowed out trees, eats nuts, seeds, fruits, berries, fungi, plants, insects, eggs, smaller rodents
    Voles - small, grey, stout, short hairy tail, 14-19 cm in length, eats grasses, sedges, forbs, leaves, seeds, found in grasslands with moist ground, digs shallow burrows underground, nests made of woven grass
    Water Voles - short round nose, chubby cheeks, brown fur, 14-22 cm in length, found near water sources
    Mice - rounded ears, hairless tail, 2-8 cm in length, found in forests and grasslands, makes underground burrows, poor eyesight, keen sense of hearing, eats a wide variety of food, fruits, seeds, grains, etc
    Rats - fur ranges from grey-brown to black, larger than mice, 32-43 cm in length, found underground and near human settlements, spread diseases, eats a wide variety of food, grains, fruits, vegetables, fruits, nuts, bugs, anything edible
    Rabbits - fur typically brown-grey in colour, large powerful back legs, large ears, 20–50 cm in length, live in groups in underground burrows, can be found in meadows, woods, forests, grasslands, deserts and wetlands, most active at dawn and dusk, eats grass, forbs, leafy weeds and their own dropping to digest their food further and extract more nutrients
    Hares - larger than rabbits, ears are larger than rabbit's, large powerful back legs, large ears, 40-70 cm in length depending on species, live in simple nests above the ground solidarily or in pairs, similar diet to rabbits
    Shrews - poor eyesight, good hearing and sense of smell, 5-8 cm in length, active day and night, but mostly after dark, makes its nest underground or under dense vegetation, eats mostly insects, slugs, spiders, worms, amphibians and small rodents
    Water Shrews - fur is black or grey-black on the back and silvery-grey on the belly, more brown in colouring during the summer, 13-17 cm in length, found near water sources, swims well, can make short dives in search of food, eats aquatic insects, small fish, snails, earthworms, fungi, green vegetation

    Finches - strong stout beaks for eating seeds, 9-25 cm in length depending on species, found worldwide though often different species with the exception of Australia and polar regions, eats mostly seeds, will eat fruit, berries and vegetation when seeds are scarce
    Thrushes - most species are grey or brown in colour; often with speckled underparts, 12-33 cm in length depending on species, found worldwide though often different species, lives in forest; typically on the ground, eats insects, worms, snails, other invertebrates and fruit
    Sparrows - strong stout beaks for eating seeds, typically brown-grey in colour, 11-18 cm in length depending on species, similar to finches, eats primarily seeds, occasionally insects, though some species will eat anything edible
    Crows - black in colour, 33-50 cm in length depending on species, found worldwide though often different species, very intelligent, eats invertebrates, carrion, scraps of human food, eggs, nestlings, grains, mice, frogs, etc
    Pigeons & Doves - stout-bodied with short necks, vary from dull grey and white colours to bright greens, 15-75 cm in length depending on species, eats primarily seeds and fruit, some species will also eat worms, insects, moths, snails, etc
    Starlings - most species typically have a dark plumage with a metallic sheen, 15-50 cm in length depending on species, different species found worldwide except for very dry deserts, diverse and complex vocalizations and can mimic other noises such as other bird species, car alarms and even human speech patterns, eats mostly fruits and insects, also eats nectar
    Magpies - variety of colours and patterns, 31-60 cm in length depending on species, very intelligent, favour living in areas with trees and wide open spaces, typically forage on the ground, eats a variety of foods, such as small birds, eggs, insects, rodents, scraps, carrion, berries, nuts, grain, etc
    Common Pheasants - males are more brightly coloured, males 60–89 cm in length, females 50–63 cm in length, short distance fliers, found in woodland, farmland, scrub, and wetlands, during winter, they eat mostly seeds, grains, roots, and berries, during the summer they eat insects, fresh green shoots, spiders, earthworms and snails
