Regarding the Hounds
Cepheus hounds are a large canine species, which reside in remote alpine regions. They are legendary creatures, and occasionally an individual will develop the ability to wield magic. The hounds are ruled by a series of deities - immortal and superior hounds which act as guardians over the creatures.
Adults grow to be slightly larger than a grey wolf. They have a long mane which extends down the whole back, forming a thick forelock at the head and a tail at the rear. Their whole body is covered in thick fur. All hounds have small horn points just in front of the ears, and these often extend into longer horns. It is not uncommon for a hound to have multiple horns. The hounds are carnivores and prey off deer, rabbits, birds and other mammals.
The Magic of the Land
The mountainous regions in which the hounds inhabit are full of magic, and packs of hounds have been known to gather in large groups to settle in areas which are large pockets of magic. The magic boosts the hounds' mental and physical capabilities, and pups born in such environments will grow larger and stronger. Sometimes, hounds are born with different appearances than normal, or are even born with magic within them, giving them supernatural abilities - but this is rare. Physical differences are often passed down from generation to generation, but magical capabilities are only rarely inherited.
Deities are directly linked with this magic. They often communicate to the hounds through this, sometimes even using it to walk amongst them in a less obvious form. Deities are extremely rare and often are vastly, physically different from the mortal hounds. Each deity has a different power or skill. Deities can only breed once, and although their young may inherit some physical capabilities, the magic is rarely inherited.
Breeding
Cepheus hounds use magic to breed. Breedings between two different genders are most common, yet they are also capable of breeding with the same gender - although this is more difficult to achieve and is not always successful. Pups are born in litters of 1 - 2 pups, and each hound can breed up to 3 times. Hounds mate for life, but if separation occurs, a hound's fertility is greatly reduced. A re-mated hound will only be able to breed once, and have one pup.
Hounds court each other for a month before mating. After becoming mates, the earliest they can have a pup is a month later. After a couple has had a litter, a month must pass before they are capable of having any more pups.
Deities may only breed once. Separation is more likely to happen in a couple that involves a deity, due to their immortal life, but after separation, if a deity has already bred, it becomes infertile.
