Everyone from Cyrrane was already out hunting or patrolling or whatelse- everyone but Joan, the mothers and Lyra. Rhys was also here, working with Joan, and it was a little strange to see him without his brother following him like a shadow. In the nursery, Hilda was sitting in a chair heavily. Her stomach was huge, and she was certain that the baby could come any time now. Laedrya was with her baby- though, now toddler- daughter, who was babbling and trying to stand. Hilda laughed when she saw Lyra stand with the help of a chair, lift one foot, then tumble down immediately. She hadn't managed to walk yet, but today, Lyra seemed determined to take her first steps.
"Come to mum, Lyra!" Laedrya was saying, crouching a meter away from the girl. Lyra was standing, holding on to a chair. She looked at her mother and reached out one hand towards her: too far. She let go on the chair, and while gravity attempted to pull her down, Lyra pushed one foot forward, then another, and finally the first one forward again! She stumbled another step before finally collapsing in her mothers arms, laughing. "Oh, well done my girl! I'm so proud of you!" Laedrya hugged her daughter, ruffling her curly black hair. Lyra wriggled out of her grasp. "I walk!" she exclaimed happily. Laedrya nodded. "Yes Lyra, you walked." she said, still smiling wide. "Do you think you can do it again?" Lyra nodded energetically, almost losing her balance as she did so. "I walk again!" she exclaimed, and launched out towards Hilda now.
She took a step, but started toppling forward. To stop herself from falling face first, Lyra quickly took another step then another, faster and faster until she crashed into Hilda's chair. The dwarven woman picked her up and lifted her up in the air, finally settling her gently on her lap. "Careful there Lyra, you were about to fall." Hilda tapped on Lyra's nose. "But not fall! I walk." Lyra repeated stubbornly. Hilda shook her head while grinning and set Lyra on the ground again. "Yes, you walk." she agreed, and watched the toddler stumble around again. She was so determined to do it! Hilda was certain that in no time, the little girl would be rampaging on her own around the village.

Leaving the ancestors shrine, Myriam had to lean against a tree to not fall. Yes, sure, she definitely needed to eat. But she couldn't do that when others were going hungry. Despite that feeling of self-sacrifice, Myriam knew deep down that if she kept going like that, she could get injured or sick, and thus unable to help out. Yet still she continued to refuse to eat. Today, she had gone to the ancestors shrine to request some sort of help, the blessing that her hunters would come back with more food. Now, as she went on her way again, Myriam had no idea if her prayers had been heard.
Myriam decided to pass by the lake below the cliff before going home. She could use a quick bath, and she was curious to see if there were some fish in that lake. The trip to the lake was short but tiring. Any effort now made Myriam faint and trembling. The leader sighed when she arrived, then crouched and threw some water over her head. It felt great. Myriam drank a little before standing again. Her stomach felt a little fuller than before.. Myriam suddenly heard a sound from behind her, banging and scraping. She turned around quickly. It was then that she noticed a small opening in the cliff behind. A cave? And what was inside? Myriam went closer quietly, hoping it wasn't a wild animal. She wasn't armed except for a long dagger.
As she arrived nearer, something told her the sounds must be man-made. It didn't sound like random animal shuffling. "Is anyone there?" Myriam asked hesitantly. The noises stopped suddenly, then there was quick steps, and out of the cave entrance ran a tall man, brandishing a pickaxe and roaring: "WHO is that!?!" Myriam, completely taken by surprise, stumbled back a few steps, tripped, and fell over backwards. She tried to break her fall with her hands, but as she did that, instant burning pain shot up her left arm. "Aah!" in her weakened state, Myriam couldn't bear the pain. Her head hit the rocky ground below and black swallowed her up.
~
"Err miss, are you awake?" The first thing Myriam noticed was the terrible pain in her left wrist. Then she noticed that her head was lying on something soft and she was in a cool place. Myriam tried to move, but shifted her wrist. "Ah!" she winced. That hurt. "Oh, you're awake." the voice spoke again. Myriam opened her eyes. She was lying on her back, inside a cave. A man with pale skin, blond hair and strange pink eyes was sitting nearby. He had a red mark on his cheek, like an injury, and wore dark, soot stained clothes. "Yes, I'm awake." Myriam said, surprised at how weak her voice sounded. "Who are you?" she asked. The man hesitated. Then he replied: "My name is Silas Denver."
~~~
Back at camp, the hunting parties were coming back, very happy. They had all caught a good amount of meat, and it seemed like food was back. But Myriam, who was usually one of the first people here to take care of everything, was still missing. Pantaleon was beginning to worry. "Should I go look for her? And Cunegonde hasn't appeared yet either... Maybe they're together?" Joan had come next to him. "Let's wait a little longer. Maybe she decided to go for a swim in the lake to refresh herself? It's autumn, but the weather was quite warm today." Pantaleon sighed. "Maybe, maybe..." he looked around. Aaron had gone to see his wife, while Laedrya and Lyra had arrived to greet Zaos. The little girl kept repeating. "I walk! I walk!" Pantaleon had a strange feeling when he saw Zaos pick Lyra up and hold her high above his head, making her giggle. Was it.. Envy?
"There's Myriam!" Bargas suddenly exclaimed, pointing towards the entrance of the village, where the leader and an unknown person were approaching. Myriam was walking slowly, holding her arm cradled to her chest. "Oh my, she looks injured." he hurried forward, ever the gentleman, but was beat to it by Joan. The healer, without even glancing at the stranger, immediately took Myriam by the shoulder and steered her towards the Healers Hut. Bargas stopped in front of the man. "May I ask you you are, sir? And why you have brought back Myriam injured?" Bargas asked politely. But despite the politeness, there was an undertone of warning in his voice. "Well.. Well, I used to live in a cave under this cliff-"
"Come into camp!" it was Aaron who had cut the man off. The hunter chief waved at Bargas and the stranger. "I'd rather we all hear the story at once, you won't have to repeat." The man seemed reluctant, but he followed Aaron's directives and went to stand near the center, where a dozen people listened to him. "My name is Silas Denver. I used to live under the cliff here, in a cave." the man started. "Earlier this afternoon, I was inside the cave- I'm a miner, you see. I was trying to find something- when I heard sounds outside. I was worried it might be dangerous animals, so I ran out of the cave with my pickaxe, shouting and hoping to scare it off- well, except that it was Myriam, your leader. She was very surprised when I came, and fell backwards and broke her wrist." Silas looked down, embarrassed. "I'm really sorry, I didn't wish to hurt anyone."
There was a long, tense silence. Almost everybody's faces were clenched in angry frowns. Everybody cared about and admired Myriam here, and they were all angry at this man who had hurt her. Zaos, who had come back in time to hear the story, talked first. "I think we can all agree here that you did a grave mistake that will not be forgotten by anyone." Behind Zaos, Laedrya couldn't help but smile at her husbands words. He was angry too, which meant he cared about Myriam as well. It made Laedrya happy to see that Zaos really did feel art of this village now, despite having been reluctant at first. Zaos continued. "But I would like to hear the rest. How did you come to be in our village, supporting Myriam?" Silas, looking more and more worried, continued his story.
"When she broke her wrist, Myriam fainted. When I realized my mistake, I brought her into the cave and gave her some water. She woke up and we talked for a while. She told me about the village and everything, and she said I could join. So I helped her back up here." again, there was a silence. Finally, Zaos spoke. "Fine, you've joined Cyrrane, congrats. But don't think we've forgiven you yet." suddenly, a loud cry made everyone whirl around: it came from the nursery, where Hilda was.
~~
Inside the Healers Hut, Myriam had told Joan the story. The young healer sighed and shook her head when she heard that. "He's an idiot." she mumbled. Myriam shook her head, thinking about the things Silas had told her. "No, not idiot. A lonely and scared person." she said quietly. She had heard his story, the reason why he couldn't be with other people and live a normal life. She understood that, and hoped that they could help him out here. Just as Joan had finished bandaging Myriam's wrist, a panicked Aaron ran into the Healers Hut. "Hilda is giving birth!" he shouted. Joan, instantly forgetting Myriam, ran out. "Ask Marya to give me some clean cloth and cool water! And somebody start and fire and heat more water, I'm gonna need that!" and just like that, she disappeared outside.
~~~
The evening was long and painful. Everyone could see Marya rushing out of the nursery sometimes with bloodied cloth, coming to boil them on the fire in the middle of camp. Despite looking exhausted, she didn't seem too worried. "Joan said that this is the normal length for a birthing. There's no problem so far." she promised Aaron, who was walking in circles, biting his fingers anxiously. It didn't comfort him much. Zaos, watching the hunting chief, was somehow glad he hadn't been there when Laedrya had given birth: he would have been terribly worried too.
It was several hours later into the night, when most people were already asleep, that there was a short silence then the crying of a baby coming from the nursery. Aaron, fidgeting, hurried to the door of the nursery, waiting for somebody to tell him that Hilda and the baby were alright. Joan, tired lines on her face contrasting with her bright smile, opened the door. "Both the baby and your wife are alive and kicking-quite literally so in the case of your baby, Aaron." she told him, and Aaron visibly sagged with relief. "Can I-" he gestured towards the door. Joan stepped aside. "Yes yes, come in! Not too long though, Hilda tired and needs to rest." and Aaron slowly entered the nursery.
Hilda did look tired. She was lying on a bed of now clean linen, and in her arms was a small baby. When Aaron entered, Hilda smiled. "Aaron! Come. We should decide what to name her." the hunting chief came closer, suddenly feeling all meek and shy. "Her?" Hilda nodded. "Yes, it's a girl." during the pregnancy, Aaron and Hilda had talked about names, and had decided to use the dwarven name system: the first name would be chosen by the parents at birth, while the last name would only be given only when the child turned 18, and it would be a name that corresponded with the child's personality or an attribute.
Aaron sat on a chair just next to the bed and bent down to look at his baby girl. She was still crying, but had started to calm down. Her eyes were baby-blue, and she had almost no hair, only a couple of very fine blond wisps.
She looked so delicate and fragile! The newly made dad cracked a smile and brushed her forehead with his thumb. So tiny, and yet he felt so much love for her! "How about Cutie?" he proposed, grinning. Hilda laughed. "I suggest Talyn. Like the free spirit in the legend."
~~~
Pantaleon, tired as well from having stayed up while Hilda had been giving birth, decided to pass by the Healers Hut. Joan wasn't there, and he knew that Myriam wasn't asleep: he had seen her go in just a minute ago, after talking with Joan. She had wanted to make sure Hilda was alright, most likely. Pantaleon was sad: he had looked for Cunegonde a good part of the evening, but had been unable to find her. He worried that she had left for good, since yesterday, due to lack of food, he had been unable to feed his cats and they had gone hungry. But now, Pantaleon had arrived at the door. He sighed and knocked.
Inside the Healers Hut, Myriam had been lying on the bed, just relaxing. She didn't actually feel tired, but knew it was a false feeling and she would need to sleep if she wanted any chance of being awake enough tomorrow to go hunting. Her wrist was still painful, but thanks to the splint Joan had made for her, it didn't throb every time Myriam moved it. When the knock on the door sounded, Myriam sat up quickly. "Come in!" she called, expecting Joan to come. Instead, Myriam was surprised when the small stature of Pantaleon became visible in the door frame.
"Panto! Aren't you sleeping?" Myriam asked curiously, standing up. The hobbit shook his head. "No, I couldn't sleep, I was worried about Hilda. Also, I can't find Cunegonde..." Pantaleon closed the door behind him. Myriam sat back on the bed and patted the space next to her. "Come sit down, you must be tired. What do you mean, you can't find Cunegonde?" Pantaleon moved closer and sat down. "Well, I haven't seen her since yesterday. I'm scared she ran off because there was no more food..." Pantaleon was looking down. Myriam nodded sadly. "You might be right.. Cats need food and they aren't always so mindful of who's feelings they hurt, I'm sorry."
Myriam put her arm around Pantaleon's shoulders- luckily, he was sitting on her right side. She suddenly had the urge to protect him, to make sure he wasn't sad again, even if she knew that was impossible. She wanted to be there for him and make him happy. Confused by her feelings, Myriam talked again. "But at least you've still got Barthelemy." she said, nodding towards the sleeping cat. Pantaleon nodded. He felt good like that, Myriam next to him, just talking. He was very grateful to her. Yes, he still had Barthelemy, and he still had her, too. What was that warm fuzzy feel inside him?
There was comfortable silence for a while, but Barthelemy broke the mood by waking up and scratching at the door, meowing loudly. Pantaleon sighed and stood to open up for him, while Myriam scratched her head awkwardly. She yawned. Pantaleon looked at her. "Oh I'm sorry for keeping you up, Myriam. You need to sleep and heal that wrist of yours. Good night!" he said. As he talked, he felt his face flushing a little, but hoped that the low visibility would hide it. Little did he know, Myriam was thinking exactly the same thing. "Good night, Panto." the leader said, waving with her good hand. She leaned her head on her shoulder as Pantaleon closed the door softly. What was this warm fuzzy feel inside her?
~~~
The sky lightened and birds started chirping: it was morning. Myriam woke up in the Healers Hut, where she had stayed the night so Joan could watch over her. Sht tried to stretch, but had forgotten about her wrist: she winced and quickly stopped it. It still hurt, but Myriam was confident she could go hunting today. Maybe the hunters had caught a lot of things yesterday, but Cyrrane wasn't completely out of danger yet: they needed all possible people to hunt. Myriam saw Joan in front her her wake up too and yawn loudly. The healer hadn't slept much last night, because of Hilda's baby.
Before Joan could tell her not to go, Myriam quickly left the room, just as Joan was rubbing the last remnants of sleep out of her eyes. The leader stepped outside, took a deep breath of fresh air, then went to have some breakfast. At the center of the village, by the large campfire, Zaos and Aaron had already prepared bread and fruits to eat. Almtrude was eating in a corner, while the two kids, Arun and Rhys, were leaning on each other sleepily. Just as Myriam watched, Bargas and Alkhas arrived. The two were locked in conversation, one that seemed very interesting: Alkhas, though he was shy, was smiling, and from where she was, Myriam could see Bargas fidgeting with the tip of one of his beard plaits, which he often did when he was concentrated or happy.
"Myriam, Nice to see you up and about!" Aaron walked to her, pulling the leader out of her reflections. Myriam smiled. "Yes, I'm definitely feeling better. I heard you all had a great hunt yesterday. Well done." she remembered her prayer to the ancestors yesterday when she saw all the cut up meat drying. It seemed like it had worked! "Yes, yesterday was a great hunt, we have enough food for a couple days now, provided we don't get too many new people- which reminds me.." Aaron looked around. "Where is the new guy? Silas? And why the heck did you ask him to join?"
Myriam sighed at Aaron's words. "Silas is a person who.. Suffered a lot. He was alone for a long time and went through things no-one should have to deal with, especially at such a young age. He needs people who are there for him." Aaron huffed. "Myriam, almost everybody here went through things we shouldn't have. You lost your family when you were a kid. Zaos and Laedrya were kicked out of their village for loving each other. Joan was almost killed by her siblings, for gods sake! You can't go around telling dangerous people that they can join." Myriam stopped back, feeling stung.
"Are you suggesting I refuse to help someone who obviously needs it? That I abandon a person who was forced to work in a mine and rejected by their own family because they weren't normal? Silas isn't dangerous, he was scared! Scared because he thought it was someone else coming to hurt him, to look at him and laugh, to use him for their own good then throw him away like a used piece of paper!" Aaron shook his head. "No, no-" but Myriam was angry. "I don't care if he hurt me- he didn't mean to. When he realized his mistake, he bandaged me a little, he brought me into the cave and sat by my side while I woke up. We talked, and I realized that despite his strange, creepy look, he was a lost person, who didn't know where they're going. He needs a family! He's just a kid, Aaron. We all need to be the family he didn't have."
Aaron looked down when Myriam had stopped talking. He realized his mistake now: he had let himself be fooled by Silas' strange appearance and accidental mistake. He had instantly thought he was a bad person, despite knowing nothing of his history and how he got there. "I'm sorry, Myriam." Aaron mumbled. "I didn't realize. I won't judge others after knowing them only a few minutes." he wasn't sure how quickly Myriam would forgive him: she was doing her job, and well, and he was there trying to tell her that she was wrong. Suddenly, Aaron felt a hand on his shoulder. "It's alright, Aaron. We all make mistakes, I'm just glad you realize it." Myriam grinned. "Now, let's have some breakfast."
~
An hour later, everybody was up except for Hilda, which was understandable. Silas was also here, but he stayed alone, in the shadow of the houses. He had nibbled on a piece of bread as only breakfast. Since everyone had eaten, Myriam decided to make a short announcement. She stood on the wooden platform and tapped her foot on the ground to get everyone's attention- she had wanted to clap her hands, but that didn't quite work. "Everyone, please listen. I have a couple announcements to make." Myriam waited a few seconds until people were listening.
"First of all, a very happy news. Hilda has had her baby yesterday! It's a girl named Talyn, as both mother and child are healthy." there was some cheering, some clapping, and a lot of happy faces. "Then, I would like to welcome Silas Denver to Cyrrane. He helped me out yesterday when I fell and broke my wrist. He will be a miner, since we discovered some caves just under this cliff." at this news, there was less clapping. A couple people shot a welcome at Silas- Aaron amongst them- while some shot a dark look at him. Others just nodded towards him, neither friendly nor unfriendly.
Myriam continued. "This last thing isn't really an announcement. I just wanted to thank you all for bringing back so much food yesterday, every single one of you. We had a rough patch the last couple of days, with not enough food to feed everyone, and one of our cats ran off. But now, we have enough to last for a while, and if we keep hunting and gathering as well as what you did yesterday, we will be fine." Myriam grinned, and there was cheering. "Now, get organised and let's start working!"
