- Bonus Points for Svana
.....Matthias rubs his sweaty palms over his thighs as he looks out over the agility course. The organizers had done a wonderful job sprucing it up for the holidays. Unfortunately, for Matthias, this is his first time running a dog through an agility course and the extra flair means Svana might be more distracted then she'd be with her usual handler. Lovette was out due to a sprained ankle so she spent hours the day before helping Matt learn how to run the patient red dog through their home courses.
.....Looking down at Svana by his side he runs his hand over her ears doing his best to not show the dog his nerves. She watches him with her amber eyes and wags her tail excitedly. This was her job, after all, she loves it no matter what human is running the course with her. He grins at the happy female and rubs her ears how she likes it. He may be nervous to be a last-minute fill-in, but Svana's unwavering confidence is certainly a good boost to Matt's nerves.
.....With one last big inhale he leads them over to their starting point and Svana sits tense and ready to go. The second Matt starts moving at a run Svana is off like a shot. Her long red fur streaming behind her as she sails over the first bone-inspired jump. Surprisingly she barely hesitates at the different look to the usually familiar obstacles. The mix of bone and limb decorated jumps barely get a glance except to see how high she must jump. Entering through the mouth of the Serpent (aka collapsed tunnel) she goes flying out the tail and after a few more jumps she gets to her favourite part: the weave poles.
.....The poles are the colours of candy corn and at the top of each tall pole, there are the top half of little plastic skeletons. This is the first time Svana shows any hesitation but after a small encouragement from Matt goes through the motions like usual. As she weaves her body through the poles and makes them start rocking the arms on the skeletons start waving around wildly and making a mix of odd sounds. Svana breaks from character exiting the obstacle and turning around to leap at these odd creatures in excitement.
.....Matt freezes and calls her name with wide eyes on the verge of panicking that she stopped doing the course. His last-minute lessons had NOT included what to do if the dog just stopped following you. Luckily her diversion is over in a matter of seconds and she's back to flying over the last few comically large femurs.
.....He praises her as she jumps around and bumps into his legs with her hind end for pets. When she turns around to look at him with a doggy grin though he realizes she has something in her mouth. She leaps away when he tries to get it and goes into a playbow with her tail wagging in the air. The crowd watching remarks on her adorable behaviour with awws and some chuckles.
.....Everyone is soon bursting out in laughter though as Matthias finally manages to get the object out of her mouth and lifts it up to display a tiny plastic skeleton arm. He turns to look back at the course where the last skeleton in the line of weave poles is looking rather forlorn tilted a bit to one side with his singular arm. He shakes his head and throws it back to the excited dog, she had well earned a little treat for her hard work and he knew she wasn't the type to chew or swallow plastic toys. Svana exits the ring with her tail held high and a little hand dangling out one side of her mouth waving to the passersby.
