WME 0170: South African Oryx Antelope

Postby CopperChaos » Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:35 pm

With the revival of WMEs I thought hey, why not revive one of my artist themes as well since ya’ll seem to love the themes we’ve done lately. Introducing the first member of the second round of Antelope themed equids.

Name: Obasi
Height: 13.2hh
Gender: Stallion
Colour: Sooty Grullo (Black Dun) Splash
Quipping: Minimal Horizontal

*This equid is apart of the Antelope Theme, it must follow theme equid restrictions. For more information check out the Info Centre*

Current Owner: Ovacalix

To apply for this adopt you’ll have to engage in a short writing prompt! Fill out the form, tell me the alternative name for the South African Oryx, and then tell me about this equids habitat and what they prefer to eat. I’m looking for detail orientated and WME-accurate lore in responses. Entries will close on Sunday, January 12th at 10pm GMT/4pm CST. No extras allowed. Edits are permitted until entry deadline.

What else is a South African Oryx known as? Gemsbok
What is this equids habitat & diet like? Matteo was first seen on the north face of the Matterhorn Mountain in Europe, where he was compared to the Chamois, for the way he stood on the sheer ledges. It is unknown how the male stays warm or gets out of the weather when in periods of harsh snow as the Matterhorn often gets. Some researchers think that there is a cave on the mountainside, carved out by frequent tourists that he resides in, others believe he treks to the lower altitudes to seek shelter. His diet consists of Sweet Clover, Tufted Sedge and Alpine Mountain Gold, when it is available. He can also be spotted, occasionally, rummaging in the village near the base of the mountain, Zermatt, where sometimes he will be fed exotic treats by the villagers and tourists. It is the villagers here who named him, and hold him in high regards, and often look to him for signs of impending storms.

What is this equids habitat & diet like? Obasi is a lone stallion on the occidental side of the Sierra Madre, and he is often found scaling vertical cliffs by carefully balancing on his small but hard hooves to reach better grazing and minerals. Despite having no known relation to other resident equids, Obasi exhibits an exceptional knowledge of the region as well as the best locations to dig up Jicama, and the sweet Batata. Though his territory often endures intense summers, Obasi seems to fair very well in comparison to his peers, as the black markings under his eyes absorb great amounts of sunlight and protects him from harmful glare.

What is this equids habitat & diet like?
This equid lives in a region much like the tiny mountains (or large hills, depending who you ask) of the Ozark region of the Midwestern United States. With rough terrain that rarely sits flat and dense underbrush hiding treasures like caves and underground springs that occasionally bubble up, as well as numerous streams and lakes dotting the clay-rich land. Of the plentiful vegetation, this equid particularly enjoys red clover, ginger, and occasionally the special treat that is plantains!

What else is a South African Oryx known as? Gemsbok
What is this equids habitat & diet like? Despite his wild appearance Caballo is used to the life of luxury. He has big pastures he shares with friends to frolic around in and a nice cozy stall for when the weather isn't just to his liking. He has quite a sweet tooth and loves a good apple or peppermint as a treat. He once stole a jelly doughnut from his human and has been dreaming about it ever since.

WME Name: Oberon
What else is a South African Oryx known as? A Gemsbok! (One of my favorite Antelope species)
What is this equids habitat & diet like? Oberon lives on the Chisos Mountain range! These mountains are surrounded by the Chihuahuan Desert, and the habitat transitions from desert to forest as you go up the in to the mountains! While Oberon was born higher up the mountain, he has preferred being in the more desert climate on the lower sides of the range as he’s gotten older! He loves to graze on grass regularly but when dry spells happen he is the best equid when it comes to digging up roots! Though he has been known to dig VERY deep holes to find these roots which a few unlucky equids have unfortunately fallen in to. His favorite food though absolutely HAS to be Saskatoons! He will eat himself sick on a patch of these delicious berry’s.

WME Name: Hakim
What else is a South African Oryx known as? Gemsbok (Oryx gazella)
What is this equids habitat & diet like? Hakim lives in a mountain divide that wraps around a vast sand desert and backs a dry hot grassland. He generally grazes on the harsh mountain grasses but will happily forage from trees, roots, and shrubs; and when food is scarcer during summer droughts and winter cold, he travels further down the mountains to feed from what little plant life that clings on in the sands and lower land grasses. Hakim has been known to travel hundreds of miles in search for the lushest pastures and on occasion he has been known to sneak into human settlements and take their crops, wild melons and cucumbers are his favourite.

WME Name: !Nxa (dental-palatal click on the x) - meaning a nice, satisfying thing in Nama
What else is a South African Oryx known as? The Gemsbok (scientific Oryx gazella)
What is this equids habitat & diet like? !Nxa is a lone stallion, orphaned by his equid herd and taken in by a solitary female gemsbok who had lost her calf. He does not know that he is any different and will seek company within small gemsbok herds. Very few equids have ever been seen in his territory.

This is because the Namib desert, which he calls home, is not very montane. He exists on the rocky outcrops and sheer cliffs on either side of the Gariep river, avoiding the desert dunes of the coast and the flat sandy Kalahari to the east. Grazing is sparse, so in lean times he can be seen browsing scrubby fynbos or soutslaai, the succulent and salty plant that grows best in Namaqualand, where he gets most of his moisture. In good times, he ventures north into Namibia. On occasion he has been spotted in the famous Brandberg Mountains, pawing for shining stones.

When times are hardest, the droughts stretch over years and even the succulents shrivel, !Nxa will venture across the dunes to the coast, where he glumly munches on seaweed (his least favourite food) until the next rains come. He is sighted most when it rains, since he likes to follow the flowers that pop up and graze on their drying petals. His favourite snack is hardy !Nara melons (rind, seeds and all). Less favourable are the bitter Tsamma melons, but he'll give them a go too. He seems to prefer kicking them, or swinging them around by the vine.

What is this equids habitat & diet like?
Namib lives in a secluded valley located on the brink where a plateu of alpine meadows meet steep rolling down cliffs overgrown by forest. Hot springs break out through the cracks in the rock, rolling down the forest and creating steaming pools of water that remain warm even at the coldest point of winter. During spring and summer, he grazes on flowering alpine grasses of the meadow overlooking the forest below, enjoying the sweet taste of blooming flowers in relative safety from predators who have a hard time sneaking up on their prey in a wide open area. However when harsh winter comes closer, he has to descend to the forest below to find shelter from the howling ice-cold winds, albeit at the cost of now being among the dangerous and treacherous forest, where predators may be approaching from any direction, and there might not be enough time to run towards the safety of the high cliffs - so he has to stay alert at all times. For that reason, while in the forest he prefers to feed on low soft branches of young trees and the very tips of bush growth, so that his head can remain high and observe the area while he's eating - that way he can notice an approaching predator in time and make it to the nearest high rocky area. But his favorite food is, of course, berries - a risky treat due to mountain bears also loving them, but sometimes, he just cannot help it nibbling on some ice covered rasberries, mmm. His other "risky favorite" treat is crunchy nuts found among the fallen leaves, but local squirrels make them run out really quick, so its a very limited autumn snack.
