a lumbering draconic beast paced restlessly in front of her. liquid fire spilled out of it's large open
maw, the wreckage left in it's wake continuing to sizzle and smoke in a way that threatened to
devastate the surrounding woodlands. the beast's face was stuck in a permanent snarl, a low growl
escaping it's throat as it exposed rows of impossibly sharp teeth. it's advance towards her - towards
her party - had been halted for a brief moment, but it refused to stay still any longer. it's claws
glinted in the firelight as it made it's slow, stalking approach.

ariana attempted to steel herself, hands shaking and bathed in sweat, wringing the hilt of her
broadsword as if to ground herself. she swallowed back her nerves, her stomach feeling as though
it were filled with the very fire the beast spat. she felt her whole body shake, her knees buckling
inwards, unprepared for the challenge ahead. a hand clasped onto her shoulder to steady her, her
eyes meeting those of her dearest friend as she looked towards the source. a gentle smile rested
on her friend's lips, but ariana could see the panic she felt mirrored in her eyes. they both knew
that if they made another misstep their journey would end here.

her eyes met that of the beast, now just inches away and starting to circle them. she knew she
had to do something, anything, the rest of her party too weak to fight any longer. trying to
strike the beast's scales wouldn't stun it for even a moment, or at least not long enough for her
injured partymates to make an escape. she had to find another way, find some opening where she
would be able to get at it's soft underbelly, but her magic was limited, unhelpful.

the beast directed a powerful strike at her that she just barely parried with her broadsword, a
tiny laceration forming in it's paw from hitting the blade's edge. it made a loud, pained hiss as it
recoiled from the minor hit, the tiny cut beginning to blister and burn - and ariana knew that this
would be her one chance to strike, the only opening she would get. she rushed the beast, giving it
no time to recover from it's previous attack, and slid underneath it. the beast was covered in large,
armored scales that were impossible to penetrate withher blade, but now she was faced with it's
unarmored underbelly. ariana struck upwards into it's chest, dragging her blade across the length of
it's body.

as quick as she had found herself underneath it, the beast went down, not quite dead but badly
stunned - and slowly recovering. she took no time in fleeing from the beast's keep, her partymates
in tow. the pace was slow but they were gone before the beast could recover, and soon they were
within safety's grasp. ariana's heart still pounded loud in her chest, but they were safe, and that
was all that mattered.

Chance's favorite natural 20 moment was when they were approaching a massive, furred Gold Dragon, sleeping inside of its lair full of treasure, and attempted to steal one of its glistening, golden eggs. They managed to snatch one, miraculously, but just as they did so it hatched, foiling their plans to sell it on the black market! However, the tiny hatchling imprinted on Chance, and the end result was so much better - their very own Eastern Dragon, ready to defend them to the death if need be, and plenty bonded enough to serve as a mount for riding through the skies!

It was actually not a time that Alyssa herself rolled a nat20. No, it seemed an entirely innocent night as the party approached the boss room. It would be a challenging fight, and everyone was preparing themselves. She was readying her healing spells, the bard his support, the warrior their blade... when their mage had a proclamation. "Let me roll a charisma check! I want to ask them out for a date!"

The entire table stared at them, jaws slack. It was all Alyssa could do not to break her character and start giggling. The DM blinked as well, but agreed. Warning them this would likely endanger the party if it failed, and the fail point was HIGH. The mage nodded again. Do it. He's rolling. And almost as if in slow motion, the dice landed on the 20. Their DM nearly sputtered and turned colors, but a win was a win!

It was in this way the bard charmed their would-be opponent, bringing them over as a party member after another fantastically rolled date. The DM's tactics changed, and instead of adventure the campaign became about navigating what could have been the world's most dangerous date.

She still revels in the story to this day, as the NPC eventually married the mage and they went on to have a kid. Ah DnD. She would never lose her love of the craziness that could happen, all at the roll of the dice!
