story:
The year was 1832, a time when the typewriter had
come about, the steam locomotive was still big
news, and I was a fine and young thing too.

I recollect those times well and my memories with
it; I was but a boy, not the old yokel I am today. I
was the biggest gun of every race with my horse,
Gideon.

There was the lady who once exchanged with me
a faithful glimpse from the cheering audience. Her
name was Lucy, and shortly, we'd fallen in love.
After her sudden departure for Massachusetts, I
wrote her every day.

She and I exchanged dozens of letters, but even
then I knew I had to see her face again. It was
with every copper cent in my pocket I'd earned
from my races, I bought me a ticket on the train,
bound for Boston.

The thought of the crowded city and the
booming East was overwhelming to me. Still, I
boarded the train and sat nervously in the loaded
car of passengers, awaiting fate.

Quickly, I grew restless from sitting and decided
to stand outside the car. I needed fresh, rural air,
perhaps for the last time. With arms resting on
the back railing, I became lost in thought, gazing
at the passing landscape.

Bidding farewell to my home country, I was
frightened suddenly by a menacing noise, of
shrieking metal. Underneath the car an axle had
broken, and with a louder boom, the impact of
the locomotive collapsing sent me flying for yards.

Landing face-first in the rough, dry earth, I was
sprawled across the tracks, blood spilling from
my head. I groaned and held the ugly gash with
my paw. I remember the devastation, setting
into my mind, before I blacked out.

"What will Lucy think of me now?"
