Number: 16
Picture:
Name: Rhanno
Species: an undiscovered Forest cat like species, we'll call them the Ehoran
Personality: Rhanno is rather.. boyish. While very much female, she doesn't seem to understand how to behave like a female. I'll explain more about why later, but she grew up with male "siblings", so she tries to act male too. She knows she's female, but was never taught how one behaves.
But don't be fooled, Rhanno is extremely sweet. She'll do anything to help out a friend, and she has quite a few. Even though she's different, the other Raccoon dogs (yeah, there is such a thing http://www.mammalogy.org/mil_images/images/mid/270.jpg ) have accepted her quite readily. In fact, she's quite popular amongst them. They find her a facinating creature, and treat her with respect. Rhanno isn't quite old enough to understand much of this, and she consideres herself a Raccoon dog as well. Her "brothers" don't even seem to realize that she's any different. She's as Raccoon dog as they need her to be.
She's very family oriented. She doesn't usually go off, and when she does, it's ususally not alone. She seems to feed off of attention. For as long as she could remember, attention is all she's gotten. But at heart, she longs to be free. Pretending to enjoy the attention, the constant company of a small family group, Rhanno is slowly getting more and more frustrated. Perhaps she's beginning to realize she doesn't belong with them, she knows she's not a real Raccoon dog, and she knows she never will be.
While not the smartest creature on the face of the earth, Rhanno is smart enough. She figures things out on her own for the most part, like how to behave like a Raccoon dog. Just as they do, when there's danger, she preferrs not to fight, rather, she will hide, play dead, or scream, just like a Raccoon dog. She doesn't bark either. (although, she could if she learned how)
Rhanno tries her best to walk like a Raccoon dog, but it's very hard for her. She has much longer, ganglier legs. Even at a young age, she's bigger (overall) than even adults. As a result, she tends to be extremely clumsy. She constantly trips over small things like rocks and twigs, she has a harder time fitting into the small places her family group likes to hide in as well. The older she gets, the more she sleeps outside the little den. She doesn't know she's an Ehoran, doesn't even know they exist, or what they are, but she has their instincts. Often, while the others are in the den, she'll climb up and sleep in a tree.
Not yet a year old, she's only been told of what winter is like. Ehoran don't hybernate, it would be impossible, certain starvation. But Raccoon dogs do hybernate. She can be nervous, and if anything, this makes her the most so. What will she do while her family sleeps for months and months, unable to provide for her? She can't hunt, she's far too clumsy, and any prey that she could catch is always warned by the snapping noises she makes when she trips. Luckily, Rhanno is creative, and longing adventure. She'll find a way to survive, even if it kills her.
Likes:
She absolutely loves warm weather, as long as it's warm, she'll be out, sunning on a rock, or up a tree. The other Raccoon dogs think this is queer, but she doesn't care. Rhanno is determined to be independent, no matter how much she loves her adopted family.
She also likes warm nights. She spends as much time as she can during the day sleeping (which isn't usually more than 4 or so hours) just so she can stay up all night. It's her only alone time. She's naturally nocturnal, so nights are spent exploring the area around the den and watching out for danger.
Dislikes:
She hates being called a pest. Other animals in the forest referr to her as so, just like the other Raccoon dogs. They try to hunt her down, kill her just like her family. They don't really do anything that bad, raid a few ground birds nests, kill some small animals, but Rhanno just doesn't understand the taunts. As I said earlier, she's bigger than the average adult Raccoon dog at an early age, and such taunts are one of the only things that will make her attack another animal.
Rhanno also hates being cornered. Feeling trapped is more of a fear than anything. She didn't do well in her adopted family's den. It was too small and cramped for her, as soon as she learned how to walk, she began spending less and less time in it. She fears small spaces, and the things that other Raccoon dogs refer to as, "crates". While they don't make the best of pets, some people will come out and capture a Raccoon dog to be a companion much as a dog (even though they aren't dogs). These sinareos frighten Rhanno, and since she's never encountered a "people" she certainly doesn't plan to.
Background (Optional, but it gives you a better shot):
At the beginning of a beautiful spring, as many others, a young forest creature was born. It resembled a feline, but not any normal kind of feline. Like it's parents before it, this young was strangely colored, as if in layers of brown. It had stripes, but not those of a tiger, just a few, long vertical black stripes down it's back and tail. Also unlike most felines, she was born with her eyes wide open. Big, blue, and curious. She had long silky fur, and muscular black legs, built for leaping.
Her parents, much larger versians of the little female (nearly the size of fully grown female elk) loved her very much. Especially her father. While her mother provided the milk, her father spent all the time he wasn't hunting with his tiny daughter. "My little darling." He would croon proudly, "Some day you shall be big and strong. Some day you will own this forest along with me. And no matter what, I will always love you." Indeed, her father did love her, as much as he said. But their time together was short.
As often happens in the spring, a storm raged. A large, powerful super cell. Strong winds raged in the part of the forest they lived, the part where trees were sparce, where there was more open space, more sun shine. It was a sort of large gully. The storm poured many tears of the heavens, tears for the little daughter who would be taken from her father, and the gully flooded. Her rare and undiscovered species, the Ehoran was not a swimming type. They couldn't do it. Her father, who's name was Aralt, had gone out to hunt, he took cover under the trees that filled the forest. But her mother had stayed behind in the gully, caring for the, not then named, Rhanno. The gully filled fast, a wave of water came sweeping in and filled it like a bowl. Her mother (who's name was Era) could never have anticipated such a wall of water. Before she could reach her tiny daughter, the storm swept them both away. Era nearly drowned, if it was not for Aralt, who had come running suddenly, fearing for his family, pulled her out just in time.
"Where is my daughter?" He demanded, shaking with the effort of remaining calm. Era began to weep, "I lost her, I lost our precious baby! She's gone, gone with the flood!" For perhaps the first time in the strong leader's life, Aralt broke down. "No." He whispered, then liften his head to the sky, "NO!" He opened his mouth wide, as if in both a silent scream of sorrow, and an attempt to drown himself in the falling rain. "Stop it Aralt!" Era begged, forcing his head down with her strong paws. "If it is the will of the universe for her to become a strong leader, as you were told, she will come back to us. Have faith my love, we must have faith. We must wait."
As it happened, fate was indeed kind to little Rhanno. She floated quite safely down the gully in clumped pile of bedding, and was washed up a large, unknown number of miles away in a completely different part of the ten million acre forest. (heck ya, it's big!) This was the side which "peoples" knew about, though they rarely ventured here (the soil wasn't right for growing anything but certain trees, and big game was too scarce to hunt).
In the place where she washed up, a strange creature, about the same size, waddled up to her. It looked like a raccoon, but also like a badger. The tiny Ehoran opened her eyes wide in fear. She had never seen such a creature, and expected it to eat her. She cowered in fear. But the little Raccoon dog only screamed in delight, sniffing her all over and running back into the woods. Soon it was back, with two others the same size, and one that was much larger. The female Raccoon dog also inspected Rhanno. "Mother, can we keep it! It's so funny looking!" Rhin, the largest male of the litter begged, "Please!" His brother chimed in. The mother Raccoon dog thought for a moment, "I don't see why not. I'll raise it just like you." So they dragged her back to their den, for Rhanno wasn't old enough to walk.
And there she grew up, with the female Raccon dog (whom she only knew as, "Mother") and the three little male Raccoon dogs (who's names were Rhin, Skir, and Mavo). Mother Raccoon dog named the little female Rhanno, because she, at the time, thought the strange young one was male. (the name just stuck)
Rhanno grew up with her brothers, Rhin, Skir, and Mavo, just like any other. But she worried, for deep down, she knew she would not survive her first winter with them if she did not leave. She couldn't hybernate, and she wasn't old enough to live on her own.
She particularly realized the danger one day, as fall was beginning, and the warm, wonderful summer was waning. "Rhanno, you're so skinny! You'll never survive winter that way!" Rhin commented, as he and Mavo stuffed their faces with plants and birds eggs. "Eat more." Skir said, offering a squirrel. Rhanno just shook her head, "I'm really not hungry. I can't eat as much as you guys!" Mavo looked up, puzzled, "But you're more than twice as big as we are, and we're older than you, there's no way you don't need as much to eat before hybernating!" Rhanno looked down, "That's the problem, I know I can't hybernate. My instinct, I just know." Rhin blinked, "I guess you're gonna die then."
Rhanno was terrified of this idea, she didn't want to die! "No I won't." She argued, puffing up, "I'll just go find my own kind. I'll go on an adventure, and I'll SURVIVE the winter!" All three of her "brothers" just rolled their eyes, good luck with that. And so a new kind of determination set in, the true need to survive.
Information about the Ehoran:
All Ehoran have markings similar to Rhanno's, though her stripes are highly unusual.
Adults of both gender have a sort of mane
females have small manes, about like this:
males have manes more like that of a lion, their manes don't streatch down their back though, and aren't very bushy either
Ehoran are not lions, they have longer overall fur, and longer legs
they have big pointy ears and large eyes, perfect for seeing in the dark
they have really good eyesight and hearing, but a poor sense of smell, they're about as good at tracking by scent as people are
they are also more than twice the size of an adult male lion
there are very few in existance, and they remain an undiscovered species
it is said by the animals in the forest, that people cannot see the Ehoran, for they posess an certain magic which has yet to be tapped
they live for a very long time, hundreds, or even thousands of years, nobody really knows
In case you're wondering, I did not make up Raccoon dogs. I reasearched them before writing this, and all information I added in my form referring to them is common information I accumulated from various websites and books. (since it's common information, stating the facts in completely my own words is not considered plaigerism) 8D
