He admired his work with crossed arms and a careful eye. He’d been working on this for a couple weeks now, in every spare moment that he got. Now, though, he’d finally finished. A hand-carved, wooden surfboard leaned against the wall of his workshop, glistening in the light that filtered in through the open window. This particular surfboard was not for him, but it was a gift and it was a gift he was excited to give. He smiled slightly where he stood, saying nothing. It had been a lot of hard work, and he hoped the receiver would appreciate it.
The surfboard was a standard size, and it was expertly painted with a silhouette of palm trees and birds against a warm orange sunset. He’d come up with the design a bit on the fly, but he liked how it had turned out. There was only one thing left to do, and he reached for a roll of fabric to cover the board in. He picked it up, starting slowly and winding it about the length of the wooden board, carefully wrapping it so none of the paint was exposed. Finally, he tied the fabric into a neat bow, before taking it under his arm and leaving the door.
It was a short walk to his recipient’s home. He inhaled deeply, before reaching up to ring the doorbell. He leaned the surfboard against the side of the door, where it would not immediately be in sight.
It only took a few moments for someone to answer the door. The person who opened it was a slightly smaller viscet, with ears like a cat’s that pricked up when she saw who had rang the doorbell.
“Oh, Daz! You didn’t tell me you were coming!” she said happily, smiling widely.
He smiled sheepishly. “It was a surprise,” he said. “Sorry I haven’t been over in the past few days. I’ve been really busy lately.”
“It’s ok,” she said, the smile not fading in the slightest. “Do you want to come inside?”
“Sure,” he said, and then his own smile grew in both size and confidence. “But first, there’s something I want to show you.” He reached for the wrapped surfboard and the viscet followed his hand with her gaze. She blinked when she saw what he grabbed, and then he picked it up and handed it to her. “Happy birthday, Dixie.”
“Oh!” She let out a gasp, her paws reaching up to cover her mouth briefly before she looked up to Dazzle, grinning widely with excitement. “Oh my gosh. Thank you.”
He grinned right back. “No problem. I know you’ve always wanted to learn. So, I figured… you’ve got to start somewhere, right? Alright, let’s go in. You can unwrap it inside~”
Dixie looked ecstatic, stepping aside to let him in. As he started to walk past, she threw her arms around him in an embrace.
“Thank you so much, Dazzle. I’ll treasure it.”
“Heh. You’re welcome, Dixie.”

He had just come over to hang out and they’d eaten dinner together, but at the moment, they were just sitting together, making small talk. Dixie laughed at something on the television, but he didn’t really register it; his mind was busy thinking about something he’d thought about here for a while. He looked down at his palms, swallowing before he spoke.
“Hey, Dixie…” he started, catching her attention away from whatever they had been watching.
“Hm? What is it?”
“I was… thinking,” he said slowly, biting the inside of his cheek. Just say it, Daz. You can do it. It’s not that hard. “And I… well, I was just….” He couldn’t stop stammering. The worst she can say is no. Come on, just do it. He inhaled deeply before digging his nails into his palms. His tail curled anxiously around his own ankle, and he finally spoke. “I-I was wondering if you wanted to go out on a date with me sometime.”
She blinked, and silence reigned on for a moment. Then, a grin split across her face.
“I thought you’d never ask.”
