When Ciao lays the book across the breadth of his knees the papers give an interesting shiver. He pats the cover like one might comfort a restless dog, absently reaches with his free hand for the wand he keeps notched in his hair. "Okay," he whispers, speaking low despite the emptiness of the room, bent over the book like he's talking to it. "I have everything you asked for."

The book shifts, flutters its pages like a sigh; and then it slides slowly down the crook between Ciao's knees and falls open naturally to the page he has studied for the past month, to the one worn fine with his impatient hands. It offers no complaints when Ciao exhales and presses his palm to the warm page, when he finally straightens up and sets his wooden wand in the cradle of the book's spine.

He runs his fingers along the title to steady his nerves. "To Know Thy Enemies From Thine Friends", it reads. As best as Ciao can figure it will let him go to school tomorrow with fresh eyes, will show him those people who are untrustworthy, those who aim to talk to him just to tease him, to have something later to gossip about. Ciao, new to this school and briefly infamous for his startling orange hair, could use a radar like this.

He goes over the page one final time, with the mess of his prepared ingredients stalled on his desk.

step one ;;
Prepare the fauna. The basil must be steeped in cold water, the bay leaves ground to a thin dust. Place both in a sterling bowl; mix briefly. Slowly sift the sugar through your fingers.

Your memory must be given in physical form; a crayon drawing, a sports ribbon, something of the ike. Press it into the bowl, whatever it may be, and let it soak. When properly saturated, lay the feather over the rim. Do not let it touch your batter until you are ready for step three.

Touch the feather to your lips and state your intent. Do not lie. Dip the end in the batter and draw over both wrists the shape of the waning moon. Let sit for six hours. Do not wash your hands in the interim, or allow these markings to get wet. When six hours have passed, you may rinse it from your skin.

Empty and clean your bowl. Whatever batter has not been used must be given to nature; do not try to reuse any previous ingredients. The feather must be kept close for as long as the caster wishes the spell to work. If properly done, you will intimately know the people around you. This will last for a minimum of three days, and if tended to may last longer.

Scrutinize those few you call friends. You will see their true intentions no matter the disguise. Remember, the feather must be kept on your person, or your sight will not change. Know these peoples' truths.

potion: a potion to communicate with the dead! halloween (samhain) is almost here, and traditionally that’s when the space between the dead and and the living is blurred. for macbeth, it really is, but she has a hard time staying focused when she tries to contact the dead, you see! this potion is a mixture of apple slices, cinnamon, flax seeds, and dandelion root. but there’s something else! it’s bubbling over and has a sickly-sweet smell to it, but macbeth just shakes her head. what else could be in there? whatever it is, wish her luck! she’s tried hard to make this potion perfect.

marina prefers to only use all-natural, freshly grown, organically sourced ingredients that don't require harming poor animals. she is brewing a potion with fennel, pomegranate seeds, ground sea salt and pureed berries. her potion is designed to cure someone of negative thoughts, and persistent negativity often associated with being depressed or anxious. although, she knows it has little to no actual effect directly, and the thing which helps her customers to cheer up is her bright, flourishing service. she always loves to put on a show while she's making a batch.

directions;
1. mix in 1/2 of the "splash of vulnerability" and add 3 drops of "drop of clearmindedness."
2. add the mixed herbs and spices, stir until they're completely melted into the mix.
3. drop the frogs eye.
you're finished! feel free to pour into potion bottles as needed.

simply drink the potion, sense your third eye open and stare into the mind of anyone you please.
