No one had ventured inside the forest for decades. No one dared to, as the teenagers or mischievous kids who did were not seen again. Search parties somehow found themselves in a maze, spit back out where they had started even if they continued straight through without making any turns. Jade Grove is not an appropriate name for the haunted forest, many would say. It was now a tale passed down generations; stories of a haunted forest that steals any who are stupid enough to venture near it. Rather than call it Jade Grove, the forest has been known as Haunted Grove, and there isn't a soul alive in the area who hasn't heard of it. But there was one who knew that Jade Grove was more than a haunted forest... rather, it was quite the opposite of haunted.

Ardeki had been coming here since he was a child old enough to walk. His caretakers were never ones that were attentive to him, not that they really had a choice anyway - not with how Ardeki got around. He told himself he was friends with nature, with the shadows particularly. They hid him, and hid him well. The tiefling was never seen unless he wanted to be, his skills in stealth going beyond an aptitude for hiding. Ardeki knew that he was magical since he was old enough to remember; not that it was something he found out on his own. Rather, Jade Grove helped him realize his true powers. Some would say he was crazy, but it's not like Ardeki had a lot of people to talk to that even could call him crazy anyhow. Sure, there was his mom, his dad, and various babysitters they had hired, but Ardeki only really ever cared about Jade Grove. The forest was his friend, and the forest helped his powers grow day by day. In a world that spoke of a lack of magic, of magical powers only appearing in fairytales or nursery rhymes, Ardeki knew there was more to magic than tales. He knew that firsthand.

He had first found the forest by mistake. He had wandered away from whoever was supposed to be watching him, intrigued and distracted by a bright wisp. It led him into the forest without the young tiefling even realizing where he was going, not until he reached a beautiful waterfall. If there was ever a moment Ardeki would want to relive, it would be seeing and appreciating the beauty of the Whisperwind Rapids waterfall again for the first time - though even to this day the site still takes his breath away. He came back daily after that, sometimes led by a wisp, sometimes wandering in on his own. It was for some time that the auras revealed themselves fully to the tiefling, bringing him into their cave.

It was another sight that took Ardeki's breath away that awaited him in that cave. It was where he found himself now, surrounded by the gentle glow of the auras all around him. Different colors filled the cave with wonderful colors and a overwhelming feeling of peace. It was a full moon outside of the cave as well, the gentle glow making the Aura River turn a gentle silver, the sound of Whisperwind Rapids not far away. He had his eyes closed, the waterfall lulling him into a comforting sense of calm. Had he not been so aware of the auras' movements, he might have missed the small nudge that one gave him. He blinked, staring over at the forest spirit, waiting to see what it wanted. Often, some auras would poke at him and them float away, as if checking to see that he was still there and hadn't joined them in the spirit world. But this one was different - it seemed to want him to follow, and Ardeki was never one to ignore the request of an aura.

Bathed in moonlight and the glow of this gentle aura, Ardeki traveled alongside the river, traveling upstream. It was a familiar walk for him, having been spending the past few decades building his own sanctuary in the heart of Jade Grove. Small huts lined the forest as he ventured further, guided by the spirit. It wasn't until the unlikely pair of travelers had reached the densest part of the forest, the part that Ardeki hadn't thought to explore yet, that the aura stopped for a moment. It blinked once, its light almost going out completely before flickering back. Almost as if.. it was beckoning him inside. "You want me to go in there?" Ardeki asked, raising an eyebrow in suspicion. "I did not think I was allowed access into the dense forest." Another blink from the aura, and a slight bow from Ardeki himself. "I will respect your wishes, though I would request you go first, aura." Giving him a slight bob, as if it were nodding, the aura started leading the way into the forest.

Ardeki found himself very glad he had asked the aura to lead the way. The path was winding, though he found if he looked backwards the trees were almost parting ways for him to use the same path out. He didn't pause long enough to ponder the mystery of this enchanted piece of forest, and instead kept continuing on until he and the aura reached what appeared to be an old ruins.

Welcome to Aura Nightfall. It was not a voice, not exactly, but more like a gentle whispering in his ears - almost as if he was speaking to himself in his head. A sense of calm washed over the tiefling yet again, as this was not foreign to him. There had been very few occasions that he would hear an aura speak, and he recognized the sensation. "Is this where the auras come from?" He asked quietly, talking a short walk around the ruins. Most notably, there seemed to be a strange obelisk with runes that lit up slightly around him. He couldn't make out what language the runes were in, but he knew they were not of the physical world, somehow. Yes, the voice answered after a few moments. We have brought you here because we believe you are ready to pass our test.

"I haven't studied," Ardeki said, eyes widening. "What test?"

It isn't hard. Simply approach the stone obelisk and await an aura. You will know what to do.

Ardeki nodded, trusting the auras. They had kept him safe his whole life and had given him a place to call home, after all. As he stood in front of the obelisk, the aura that had brought him to the Aura Nightfall appeared, blinking once again. As it drifted directly over Ardeki's heart, it's light went out completely, though Ardeki could still see the outline of the aura in the tendrils of moonlight that snaked through the overhead trees. After a few seconds, the aura's light came back, but it was... black? "What does that mean?" The tiefling asked, reaching his hand underneath the aura.

It means you are to lead the Aura Enclave, a village that has been lost for centuries, since magic users have been in hiding. But magic is not to be shunned any longer, just as you have not shunned your own powers of shadow-work. There was a slight pause as Ardeki's heart skipped a beat. He had briefly heard of the Aura Enclave before, a sanctuary of sorts that was for magic users until angry mobs destroyed it, too fearful of anything magical to let it remain alive. The magic users scattered, never heard from again... until now, apparently. Heed these words, for as your village grows, you must be the one to lead them. Auras will help you, but there are decisions only those in the mortal plane of existence can make. We in the spiritual world are simply guides. Should you acquire more villagers, bring them here on the full moon. Auras will glow different colors for the professions these villagers should assume - though listen if we are to tell you a villager is not welcome. That is all. Thank you for preserving our forest, leader Ardeki. We await your next visit.

"I will do whatever I can to help the Aura Enclave, and to keep Jade Grove safe for all that come here." Ardeki smiled at the aura as it resumed it's normal color of a gentle white glow, turning and heading back outside of the Aura Nightfall. It would appear he had some work to do.

Every so often, Rowan would be wrangled into a "walk". They called it a walk but really, it was a patrol. A patrol to see if there were any holdless people interested in joining, a patrol to see if there was anything that required dragonriders to be brought in, a patrol to make sure that the territory outside of the civilized bounds of the weyrhold was safe. Rowan didn't care much for these patrols but Hush and Vivian made them more tolerable. She could whistle to them and they'd whistle back, creating fun little songs. But today wasn't most days; today was actually exciting.

Aidan noticed the den first. Of course he did, seeing as his familiar, Orgon, went around poking his nose into every hole he could find. "Watcha find, boy?" Aidan asked when he saw Orgon point at a cluster of bushes. A moment later, Aidan's eyebrows rose. "He found a fox den," he said quietly. "He thinks there's a mother and a litter."

"A litter?" asked Rowan, also hushed. She looked from Aidan's face to the bushes and back to Aidan. She made her decision. She walked over to the bushes, neatly avoiding Dulcia's attempt to grab her, and pried apart the leaves. Orgon stood beside Rowan, tail wagging hard. Vivian sat on her shoulder, chirping her interest. The leaves parted to reveal a sleeping fox that somehow hadn't noticed them, with several squeaking pups lying at her belly. Later, Rowan would tell Shollun that the pups were just so cute but in the moment, there were absolutely no thoughts behind it. Rowan grabbed one of the pups and the silence broke.

Rowan went stumbling back as a high-pitched bark emerged from the den and a pair of smallish foxes jumped out. She kept holding the pup and Aidan immediately swept to the rescue, drawing his shortsword in defense. Dulcia yelled something at Aidan but Rowan wasn't listening as she ran a safe distance away, trailed by her fire-lizards who'd gotten displaced in the rush. She looked back to see Aidan limping away, holding onto Rabrusull and wincing. Orgon was by Aidan's side, occasionally barking or whining. And Dulcia... Their eyes burned with a promise of pain and suffering for Rowan.

"What were you thinking??" asked Dulcia with gritted teeth, placing a hand on Rowan's shoulder roughly. "Was this-" they pointed to the pup, asleep in Rowan's arms- "worth it?!"

"...yes," said Rowan after a moment. "Yeah, it kinda was. It's just so cute." She looked down and smiled. "You're just a cute little baby," she cooed, ignoring Dulcia's eyeroll. "Aren't you?"

It took them a couple hours to get back to the weyrhold, by which point Aidan was mostly able to stand on his own. Rabrusull insisted that he see the Healers and the next few minutes were spent in a Shollun lecture. The Master Healer was not amused and let them know exactly what he thought. Rowan simply took it with wide eyes and a straight posture, all while still holding the fox pup in her arms. Aidan was told that he needed to stay in the hospital wing for a few days and that someone needed to send a message to Fay. By this point, daylight was fading so Rowan decided to send a message off to the Beastcrafters asking them to pick up the pup tomorrow. They'd likely want to take charge of its training and as cute as it was, Rowan didn't need another small animal in her household.

"Hey Zeke," Rowan called as she entered their house, "you'll wanna see this!"

Her brother poked his head out of his room. "What, you made another necklace or something?"

"It's cooler," Rowan promised. "Look!" She held up the now-awake fox pup, which squirmed in her hands. As much trouble as the little creature had caused, Zeke's awed expression was worth it.

Soyah let out a little hiccup-sob as she laid the small body into the grave. "There," she said softly. "That's the last of them."

Dusteah's hands trembled as she picked up some dirt and sprinkled it on. "I miss them," she said, voice shaking. For a 10-turn girl, she was handling the deaths of her parents' fire-lizards remarkably well, Soyah thought. "I miss them a lot."

"I know, sweetling," said Soyah, gently rubbing her daughter's back. "I miss them too. They've been with us for many turns and it's hard to lose them. But we can ask for more eggs the next time there's a 'lizard flight."

"It won't be the same."

"No," F'dust agreed. He was the calmest of the three, but Kimorth had told Borinth who'd told Soyah that he had cried a little in private. "But they're in a good place, with all the other fire-lizards. And they'll wait for us beyond between."

"Kimorth and Borinth are gonna be okay, right?" Dusteah asked suddenly, turning to her parents with wide eyes.

"They're fine," Soyah said reassuringly. "They'll always be around." That was a lie; the day that Soyah died was the day that Borinth did (and the day that Borinth died was the day that Soyah would, too) but there was no need to distress her daughter with the possibility of her parents dying. They were growing older but they planned on staying in this world for as long as they could.

"Are you done, Dusty?" asked F'dust.

Dusty took a last look at the grave. Now, the fire-lizards were covered with dirt and the only signs that something was underneath were a few stones that marked the spots. "I'm done," she confirmed. "I miss them but it's gonna be okay."

"It'll be okay," confirmed F'dust. "Let's go." He grabbed one hand and Soyah grabbed the other, and the three of them walked out of the animal graveyard.

Renolla squinted at the shark. The beast was big and had been taking up space in the cold storage for far too long. But how were they supposed to eat it? She glared and crossed her arms, hoping to manifest a solution. Nothing came to her.

"I suppose we could cut it up," said Fudiom bemusedly.

Renolla snorted. "Of course we will. But how should it be cut up? Do you know how to cook shark?"

"No," he replied, "but have you considered asking one of the Fishers?"

The Fishercrafters had no idea either. "I suppose we could gut it like a fish," mused Jesni. "That seems to be the most reasonable option."

"Is there any part we can't eat?" asked Riz, leaning against the door to the cold storage. "I'd think that's an important question to know the answer to!"

Jesni and Boldosh grimaced. Riz groaned.

Abesses didn't know anything. Neither did Griengrilon nor Nitia.

"I work with horses," grumbled Griengrilon. "Aquatic fauna is not my specialty."

"I think treating it like a fish is a good idea," said Abesses. "Maybe like a harder fish."

"Harder...fish?" asked Griengrilon.

"A firmer fish," Boldosh clarified. "Like a redfin. You can make steaks with them." Griengrilon nodded his understanding. But then, Boldosh sighed. "Riz brought up a good point earlier. Is there any part of a shark that we can't eat?"

Abesses shook his head frantically. "Don't ask me," he said quickly.

"Don't worry," Jesni muttered under her breath. "Wasn't planning on it."

Renolla managed to wrangle T'gin into helping with the project. He, in turn, took one of the candidates--Dallumi. They were to visit the sirens and ask how they typically prepared shark. A few days later, the pair returned with equally defeated looks on their faces.

"...did the sirens not have any ideas?" Renolla asked warily. She, the Fishercrafters, T'gin, and Dallumi were sitting in the communal dining hall, having a nice seafood dinner: mussels and pasta. Something fancy but normal, unlike shark.

"They were helpful?" asked Dallumi. At the same moment, T'gin said "They definitely had ideas."

"Spit it out," Renolla said with a sigh.

"They recommended...that we just tear it to pieces. And eat it raw." Dallumi blushed. "Although Ikehu said it tastes meaty and might make for a good steak."

Jesni threw her hands into the air. "Shards and shells, finally we're getting somewhere!" she cheered. "It's a steak!"

Dallumi finally had the brilliant idea of going to Landing and rifling through AIVAS's files for ideas on how to cook shark steak. No, really, it was brilliant. T'gin was fine with ferrying her there and the two of them spent a day looking up recipes for shark steak, as well as some other recipes for foods they commonly had at the Weyrhold. They came back with a wealth of knowledge: not only did they have several recipes for shark, but they also had more ideas for seafood, wherry and bovine, along with many ideas for sides and desserts. All in all, it was a successful day.

Renolla then borrowed Soyah's and Baridna's fire-lizards to send messages to everyone who regularly frequented the dining hall, asking them which of the recipes they would enjoy trying. In the end, it seemed split between a soup and a steak. So Renolla decided to split the difference and do both. Shark fin soup was one of the recipes after all, and wouldn't take away from the steaks. As it turned out, no part of the shark was outright poisonous, which was a relief. It seemed like the shark feast would proceed without issues.

The feast went smoothly. Shark was served to those who showed up (mostly Crafters, general staff, and dragonriders), along with several other new recipes that Renolla and her staff had decided to try. The only complaints were from people who turned out to dislike the taste of a dish and they were able to find something else without issue. Dallumi had had the idea of saving the teeth from the shark and turning them into necklaces. The woman was crafty, Renolla had to grant. Perhaps they could sell some of the necklaces to one of the nearby Holds. It would certainly make for a nice boost in income.

At the end of the day, when everyone was cleaning up, Renolla could only feel relief. The meat was tasty and she'd like to have more someday, but not for a while! The stress was almost too much.

It wasn't much of a surprise when Zerith rose for the first time. She'd been glowing for days, so Seanni and Sedah had made preparations; they'd warned the weyrfolk and the people who lived in cotholds nearby, and had made sure that there were plenty of herdbeasts for the dragons to choose from when it came time. When Sedah successfully wrangled Zerith into blooding--not eating--the herdbeasts, the gold sprang into the air closely followed by a flock of male dragons.

Zerith didn't turn around, reveling in the thrill of the chase. Besides, she knew exactly who was behind her. She soared into the clouds and let out a muted call before tucking her wings and diving. She was a streak of yellow with a trail of clouds that looked like smoke behind her. She noted that already, it seemed like two of her suitors had given up: Predath and Kimorth. Quietly, she was relieved as she didn't want to make their mates jealous. Jealousy was all bad in the weyr. But she couldn't reflect for long, as Fareth had gotten surprisingly close in her dive. Zerith flared her wings and swooped just over the blue, who overshot and had to quickly correct himself.

Zerith looked up for the first time and saw Noneth and Hosurth gliding high above while Currith and Pumolth approached from opposite sides. The gold beat her wings, narrowing them in an attempt to fly faster. She banked up and to the right, closer to Currith. The outcome of the flight had been decided long before, with all riders and dragons agreeing. Really, the whole thing had been a big show. As she flew up, Currith came from below. She attempted to gain a more height but was caught too quickly. The pair dived and the whole thing over.

the anak isles is a cluster of three islands resting in the ocean. the mainland is a hazy lump of terrain on the horizon, and the residents of the anaks are mainly alone. except for when they're not.

the anak isles were settled by captain ates. is that his first name, his last name, or even his real name? who knows? he was raised on the sea by his father, a merchant. when his father's fleet was caught in a rough sea storm, only three remaining ships were able to be scavenged out of the original fifteen. ates and his father were the only survivors. they patched up the main ship so it was able to float, but ates' father died of island fever before they could fix the rest. after burying and making a substantial monument towards his father, ates decided to travel back to the main land, hoping to gather people and bring them back to the small archipelago. he dreams of creating a mighty sea empire.

the islands of the isles are unique in their own ways. the largest, main island (albain island), is where the crew calls home. the center of it is a large clearing good for a substantial town. it is where the shops, crafting areas, and majority of the residents are located. the second island (dali island) is the median sized plot of land. most of the wildlife inhabits the island's dense forest. hunters and gatherers live on this island with many spots that are well-rotated in order to ensure no over-hunting or over-foraging. the third and smallest island (trengar island) contains only rolling hills. the island is perfect for farming. there are not many as the island is long and relatively narrow, but the land is well-cared for and nothing goes to waste. some livestock is also kept here with the farming population. each island will eventually have its own ship.

ates' vision for the isles is a feudal-like society. he and his first mate reside in albain with the rest of the scouts and warriors, however they make frequent runs to other islands in order to circulate goods and drop off supplies (especially with only one ship). each island will have its own population with its own viceroys (head hunter, head gatherer, and the head farmer). resources are shared between islands. usually, families will temporarily stay in albain when expecting children, as that is where the medics live and study medicine. after the child(ren) is born, they will go back to where they reside. when a child is old enough to start testing, they will live on each island for a few months, learning the pros and cons of each job available: militia member, hunter, gatherer, farmer, or a medic. they then move to the place they want to have a job.

They don't get very far before Lafayette screams and stumbles back as a large scaled snout emerges from the shadows. The scouts don't get a good look at the dragon as it releases a spurt of fire, clearly intending to deter rather than harm. While Malachi escapes injury completely (and Kazumi curses him for it), Kazumi ends up lightly toasted and Lafayette ends up sporting a proud back burn. Kazumi will need one post of rest or have Amira look at her, while Lafayette will need two posts of rest or have Amira look at him. ]
