It's that time of year when the air starts to develop a slight edge, a sure sign that Jack Furrost is on his way. For now the skies are clear but the sunshine is cold- a pale imitation of the golden summer moons. An early waning moon has set medicine cats on edge; surely only famine and harsh snows can follow such an omen. Cats are more likely to develop illnesses in the coming moons and kittings will be harsh. Already clans can imagine the pitiful mewls of kittens left without mothers on the wind.

He doesn't care about his clan. He is a terrible leader. I should be the leader, like I was meant to be. These cats deserve, no, they need a strong cat that will bring them into prosperity. I know that Scorchstar can do that. But who can? Gracklestar. I will be the leader. I will overthrow Scorchstar. Gracklewing wasn't paying attention to the other cats on his patrol. He had other things to worry about, scowling as he thought about Scorchstar. The leader didn't listen to anyone but his few trusted cats. He didn't want to hear ideas from anyone but those that had been in the clan the longest. He didn't care about the well-being of anyone but his family. Gracklewing knew he could do better. He knew the clan deserved better.

And he knew he was meant to be the leader.

It was going to be a slow process, he knew that. But he was going to do it, he was going to become leader, whether Scorchstar willingly stepped aside or not; Gracklewing would kill him if he didn't. He knew there would be obstacles, and he needed to get a following. But that shouldn't be hard, right? There were plenty of cats that didn't like Scorchstar's leadership. In a clan this big, it shouldn't be hard at all. He just needed to find them. And who better to start with than the younger, more impressionable cats?

Gracklewing would have gotten the kits in the nursery on board, to start their secret training as soon as they became apprentices, but of course they were the kin of Scorchstar. He wanted nothing to do with them. Instead, he turned to the apprentices, looking to see who had the most darkness in their heart, the most contempt for the clan. He knew right from the moment he was watching the apprentices train that there was one - Shadowpaw. He could see the anger in her expression as she glared at the cats praising Shrikepaw, another one of Scorchstar's kin. He could see her tail twitch in annoyance each time she performed better, but was never praised as much as Shrikepaw was. She would be the perfect cat to get on board, and she was strong. She was young, and would slip through the cracks easier than he could himself.

"Hey Shadowpaw," Gracklewing greeted the apprentice as they got back to camp from the training hollow. The apprentice twitched her ear, but gave no other sign that she had heard him. "You are going to be a strong warrior, I know it. One of the best the clan has seen."

Shadowpaw gave a grunt, rolling her eyes. "Yeah, well, try telling that to Darkthunder. Or Birchstorm. Or anyone else that was at the training hollow besides you." Gracklewing nearly smiled at how easy this would be.

"I won't, at least not yet. Because I'm annoyed at this clan to, and I want them to pay. I want Scorchstar and his cronies to step aside, to let a new leader to take place. And I want you to help me. That is, if you truly want to be a great warrior."

Shadowpaw turned, a dark glint in her eyes. Her mind was made up even before Gracklewing approached her - if it wasn't him starting this coup, she would have as soon as she became a warrior. "I'm in. How do we begin?"

the sun begins to peek over the horizon, turning the sky brilliant hues of orange and yellow, when the alpha leader stirs, her slim, lithe body sprawled on a heap of soft pelts. blinking away the sleep from her eyes, a low purr rumbles in her throat as she notes the sleeping form of her mate beside her, and she leans over to swipe her tongue over his ears. a purr emits from his own throat at the sensation, shifting as he too slowly wakes. “good morning, my love.” she murmurs, gazing him with the eyes he can never quite describe.

“good morning.” he mumbles back, his voice still heavy with the thick of sleep. stretching out on the furs he blinks at her affectionately before bumping their muzzles together. “i wanted to tell you something.” the molly says as he rests his head on his paws, looking up at her, curiously. “oh?” she takes a deep breath, steeling herself before she continues. “i’m expecting kits.” for a moment he just gapes at her as if paralyzed, then breaks into a roar of purrs, thrilled. “really? i’m going to be a father?” at her nod his eyes light up. “that’s the best news. i love you.” and the way he’s looking at her, she believes it.

“i love you too, abel.”

it doesn’t take long for the whole clan to know. abel, ecstatic, first tells the news to sparsefeather and ellis, two other alphas in the clan, and two of his closest friends since joining the clan, and after that it doesn’t take long at all to spread. the clan is thrilled at the news, as far as the alpha leader can tell from where she sits, watching the whole thing unfold. many - most, if not all - come to congratulate her. smokepelt with her youngest son, darkkit - who’s only a moon away from joining his brother flamepaw as an apprentice - tumbling around at her paws is the first to do so, bringing tangledbriar’s congratulations as well. autumnleaf had worked tirelessly with tangledbrair throughout the night - and to the joy of the entire clan, little tigerkit and bubblekit were born with no complications.

and now she is expecting kits of her own.

shoalstar shakes her head, thinking about how far they’d come since poppystar the first ruled oneclan. she’s incredibly blessed to have such a thriving clan and the honor to be able to lead them. more so, she’s glad she came back. of course, she enjoyed adventuring with abel and clementine while it lasted. but she knows she’s meant to be here, rather than following where the breezes takes her. she’s pulled from her thoughts at a slight commotion at the camp entrance - ellis, crypto, rookpounce, troutleap, brackenstep, and pondsplash are leading two apprentice-aged cats - one a molly, the other a tom - huddled together into the camp.

leaping down from the highrock she approaches the patrol, apprentices and those clustered curiously around the group. she halts in front of the younger felines, before she turns to crypto, the patrol’s leader. “why have you brought two adolescents into camp?” the tom hesitates, glancing at the pair, nervously huddled together. “we found them at the border, alpha leader. didn’t want to leave them out there when it’s leaf-bare.” shoalstar nods, turning her gaze onto the adolescent felines. “what are your names?” she asks them, kindly. “i’m moss. and this is olive.” the tom pipes up, the molly leaning against him. “are you littermates?”

it’s olive who shakes her head. “n-no ma’am. i found moss when i was traveling to get here. my mama told me stories of this clan. said that when my daddy poppystar died, she left.” shoalstar, with abel now at her side, froze. “did you say your father is poppystar? who’s your mama?” “she told me her real name is moonflower, but that everyone just calls her moon. she told me to find this clan before she died.” shoalstar exchanges a glance with abel before her gaze lands on olive again. “olive.....we’re littermates.”

    •    POV- Flamestrike/Rootfur: Flamestrike let his gaze rest on Rootfur. She was so beautiful, she was sitting in the clearing playing with a bit of moss like a kit. A big orange butterfly fluttered over her head, She leaped up to try and catch it but fell short. “Mouse dung!” She spat as she fell, Flamestrike rushed over to her and laid just beneath her to break her fall. She’s so light! Flamestrike thought as she landed on him. Rootfur jump up and studied her paws “stupid furball’ she muttered to herself, “Are you ok?” Flamestrike asked? Root fur looked up just for a moment before dropping her head and looking at the ground again “Yes of course I am!” She said before mastering up the courage to look into his eyes, being caught by the clan deputy! What kind of warrior was she!? But instead of finding amusement in Flamestrikes eyes.. she only found concern and worry. “Sorry.. but I am really fine.” She mewed to him, she gave her chest a few quick licks to hide her embarrassment. Flamestrike leaned forward to give her ear a quick lick before padding away to rest in his den. Rootfur felt a new feeling... something she’d never felt before...

•     POV- Aspenstripe: Trying not to make a sound, he crept through the snow trying to focus on hunting rather then Flamestrike. He pricked his ears for any sound of prey, there was a faint rustling near him. He slowly crept towards the rustling to find a plump rabbit, it was the biggest rabbit he’d seen in leaf-bare! He slipped into a hunting crouch and crept closer, the rabbit was too busy looking for food to realise it was about to be food. Aspenstripe pounced on the rabbit killing with a swift nip on the neck. Apsenstripe pick up his fresh kill and carried it back to the patrol. Flamestrike was going to love this rabbit, this was his chance, he had to make Flamestrike see that Toms don’t just have to be with she cats. He followed the patrol back to camp and couldn’t get Flamestrike off his mind.

Apsenstripe padded towards the warrior den with his rabbit in his jaws. He spotted Flamestrike grooming himself in his nest, he walked up to him and placed the fresh kill at Flamestrike’s feet. “Uh thanks Aspenstripe” he said before looking down at the rabbit, “Oh! “ he exclaimed “No no no! I can’t really. You must have it” Flamestrike said to Apsenstripe. “No. I caught it for you” Apsenstripe insisted, “we can share if you want?” He said with a flicker of hope sparkling his eyes. “Sure” Flamestrike said with a cool tone. Yes! This is my chance to make a good impression on him! Aspenstripe thought eagerly. So Flamestrike pattered down a spot next to him and the two toms shared the rabbit, Apsenstripe couldn’t believe it! He was sitting so close to Flamestrike their pelts were touching! He let his gaze meet Flamestrike’s before looking away quickly, embarrassed. “Don’t be afraid” Flamestrike said still looking at him, “ I won’t hurt you.” Flamestrike rasped his tongue over Apsenstripe’s ear, not aware that Rootfur was watching them, jealously burning in her eyes.

The skies have cleared up and snow seems to be falling less often now. It is still to cold for prey to be coming out but the warm days means new leaf will be just around the corner.

Announcement:

As you all have may noticed CaC has its very own lineart! The lines were created by the very talented Grey_Hoodie and are being colored in by various other mods, mini mods and the CaC artists. Allowing us to use the lineart for your cats lets us give more unique patterns as we are limited to free to use pictures. If you want your cats to be transferred onto the lineart all you have to do is get in contact with a mod and the team will take care of it.

I have also noticed that a lot of you have not been adding pebbles correctly. Remember, every post you make you get five pebbles automatically. Patrols will sometimes bring back extra pebbles they find as well! Pebbles can be used here at the cac store anytime!
