"We need to name them," Petalsong's voice was hushed, exhausted. Amberdawn had just left the nursery, the kits having been delivered... all healthy, though one seemed to be missing a leg.

"I can't," Raptorstar mumbled, staring down at the kit. Did he know that he was going to be subjected to a life of taunts? Did any of the kits know how terrible their father was?

Petalsong let out a low hiss, trying not to disturb the slumbering kits. "You are better than this, Raptorstar. Why would I have agreed to be your mate if I didn't think you to be strong? To be kind? To be protective? You are a good cat, despite what you are trying to make yourself think."
A slow shake of his head. He wasn't, but he didn't voice anything. He knew Petalsong wouldn't agree, no matter what he said.
"I'd like to name them," she said, her voice getting softer. "Birds like you."
Raptorstar shook his head harder. "No," he said, his eyes widening.
"Yes," Petalsong sighed, huffing. "Condorkit," she rested her tail on the kit that had inherited Raptorstar's own looks. "And Kestrelkit." The brighter female, already wriggling around and pushing her siblings.
"They shouldn't all be birds," Raptorstar said, finally admitting defeat. "You deserve credit, too."
"How about Sagekit, then?" She asked, resting her tail on the next - their first born. Raptorstar nodded. "Basilkit for the other girl," he added, looking at the softer colors of his second daughter.
"You get to name the last one," Petalsong said, her voice dropping as both of their eyes turned to the kit lacking a paw. "He won't know anything different, you know," she said, her eyes softening as the nameless kit let out a soft yawn, squirming around to cuddle against the warmth of his siblings. "He'll grow to be a fine warrior - I know it."
Raptorstar nodded absently, but he didn't believe her. Not yet. "Thistlekit," he finally said, sighing. "May he be as resilient as the thorns he was named after."

it was like they had no previous lives. when the group woke with sand under their fur, they had no recollection of the moons before them. it was like they had never collect memories before they opened their eyes. all they knew was their names- it felt as if they had been etched into their brains, allowing them to grasp something, anything, that connected them to who they truly were.

mandrakeclan rose from nothing. five (six if you include the cat that took them in) cats, somehow connected, somehow entangled in each other's lives, came from nothing. with tall grasses surrounding them and grey skies above their ears, they banded together and regained trust. it's a trust they never knew they once had.

mandrakeclan resides in a valley in the countryside of alaska. dens are burrowed into the mountainside and the forest and rivers have become their hunting grounds. winters can be harsh, here, but the prey tends to be plentiful. bears of all sorts alongside moose roam the area, taking ownership of the land. caribou, cougars, foxes, coyotes, and gray wolves are not far behind the many bears and moose.

this group will be ruthless- wired to survive frigid winters and high temperature summers - and they're a determined and low key group. it's not hard to tell that the clan with an icy appearance prefers to keep to themselves as they often deny allies and keep their peace in an attempt to stay completely neutral with other clans. neutrality is an important trait to have within this clan. losing cats to war or petty grievances is no option within mandrakeclan. this is a group of natural born leaders, empaths, and intellectuals.

this clan's hierarchy is also different from the typical clan structure.

the astrum is the clan's leader. they're given nine lives by their ancestors, also referred to as the proauctors, or founders. the astrum is given their truest name when called upon by their ancestors.

the cordus is the clan's deputy, or second in command. they are the right hand for the astrum and earn their truest name when called upon by the proauctors.

the consona is the clan's healer or medicine cat. this cat is trained specially to combat health issues. the consona earns their truest name upon being accepted into the position.

magnus is what would be considered a warrior. these cats are trained in combat and hunting. this is when they get their truest name unless they are destined for cordus or astrum.

an infra is an apprentice. these cats are given a prefix by the ancestors and it is always followed by -infra.

an ortus is a she-cat with young. these cats have two names- their truest name and their flos. the flos is the name their young address them as.

novus is the clan's group of newborns/kittens. these cats are given a prefix by the ancestors and it is always followed by -novus.

then there's vetus. this is the group of elders. their truest names were given to them when they became a magnus.

and finally, the court of sophos. the court of sophos is a group of twelve cats, nine of which are chosen by the ancestors to be their physical beings- these nine cats are referred to as the novem. the last three are chosen by the novem and are thought to be the leaders of the court. this group holds trials and decides punishments, along with monthly meetings on the full moon to discuss clan matters.

mintypaw sighed at the calm atmospere. she was relatively new to the clan, but he was newer, and that sparked a bit of pride inside her. they padded along, looking for food, when all of a sudden ginger stopped dead in his tracks, still as a stone. everyone stopped talking and watched as the persian tom crept forwards, before launching himself through the air. there was a shrill alarm call, that was cut off abrubtly, and ginger padded back over with a robin in his mouth.
"excellent catch!" wolftail congratulated him, and graywing nodded through her mouth full of rabbit. he just shrugged and scraped earth over the catch, and graywing did the same. they would need to come back for it later. wip

Bees?It was quick. A single slash was all it took to bring the reign of Beetlestar to an end. A single slash to send NixClan into chaos. A single slash to ruin what had been so carefully built up through many moons. It was... a mess, to say the least.

Bees?And yet, in the middle of the chaos, stood one cat, upon the rock that their beloved leader had stood upon just moments before being slashed beyond the last thread of their life. A black smoke, longhair tom with fiery orange eyes that blended to a bright, golden yellow around his pupils. His head high and chest out despite how puffed out his tail was, he let out a loud yowl.

Bees?As the heads surrounding him turned, training upon him in only moments, he felt the wind rush into his lungs, chest puffing further with the rush. He cleared his throat, stepping farther up, paws barely teetering upon the edge.

Bees?The view was… striking. He could see so far, so many of his family - could they be called that anymore, after losing their binding thread? He didn’t know - so much of his home. He let out a quiet sigh before raising his voice once more, surprising even himself with the strength he found behind it.

Bees?“What do you all think you’re doing? Have you no shame, causing such a mess? What would Beetlestar think, seeing you all acting like a bunch of loners?” He bellowed, scanning the crowd surrounding him, filling his home. “This is no way for the members of NixClan to act! Or have you all forgotten where you stand?”

Bees?He watched the many cats begin to settle - thank StarClan - and look amongst themselves, shocked. He let his chest fur flatten, allowing himself a breath before continuing.

Bees?“No matter the circumstances, members of NixClan should always treat this land with respect, or have you all forgotten? No matter the foe, warriors of NixClan will face them with strength and pride! This is our land, dangit, and we will not lose it to some loners!” With his final cry he puffed his chest back out, unsheathing his claws as they dung into the rough stone.

Bees?The cries from the cats around him fueling his muscles, he leapt from the rock, paws hitting the ground running as he began preparing to face off, finally, against the ‘loners’ that seemed to plague the land just outside of NixClan’s territory. AbyssClan.

NixClan is a clan that was founded by a small group of cats, the main leader of which being a blue/gray shorthair molly with amber eyes named Molly (former kittypet, referred to mostly as Mollystar but when alive was simply known as Molly, her kittypet name), aswell as a ginger and white tabby shorthair nonbinary cat with copper eyes named Phoenixfire, a seal point bicolor longhair tom with blue eyes named Brairpaw (later Briarscar), and a caliby longhair nonbinary cat with green eyes named Aldereyes.
Just before this new era, the clan was lead by a black and white shorthair nonbinary cat with amber eyes named Beetlestar (referred to as Beetle by then-deputy and close friends/family, including current leader)
The current era is lead by a dummy by the name of Phoenix (simply goes by that, is technically named Phoenixeyes/Phoenixstar but he doesn’t like being called such, possibly in reference to how Beetle was known by friends and family) who is a black smoke longhair tom with fiery orange eyes that blended to a bright, golden yellow around his pupils.
This era is just beginning, but has high goals, to fend off the cats that have often terrorized any cats that come near their territory that is known as AbyssClan.

Territory

NixClan resides in what is, mostly, an open stretch of land, with clumps of trees and brush that work as dens where queens may have their kits. Between around 5-6 of these patches of flora they’ve, through multiple generations, made a small slope where most of the actual Clan Business goes on.
Near the center of this slope, slightly towards the SouthEast, is a plateau where the Leader’s Rock is wedged, giving a good view of the whole clan’s territory. Around the slope is gathered the slightest ‘wall of dirt’ of sorts, only about half the height of a full-grown cat.
To the North and West of the territory is a fairly heavily wooded forest, which is where the founders of NixClan came from (technically they came from the West but y’know, around that area)
To the East is a river, on the other side of which is more woods, though far less heavy in the tree department. In the Spring/Newleaf it’s often too fast to cross, in the Summer/Greenleaf it’s somewhat shallow, in the Fall/Leaf-fall it’s at it’s calmest and medium depth, and in Winter/Leaf-bare it is, unsurprisingly, frozen over, and often too slippery to cross.
And to the South is more stretching flatland that, after a few lengths away from where the NixClan territory ends, is a fairly large span of water, the floor of which is a soft sand. It often will entirely freeze over in Winter/Leaf-bare, but the ice is rather thin and can be broken through if careful enough to not fall in. Though it’s often advised against as, if one were to fall in, there is low likelihood of getting back out of the freezing cold waters.
Off to the South is also where the large ravine that the legend of AbyssClan emerges from. Around that gash in the Earth, loners seem to emerge quite often, not always being the most friendly of houseguests. Because of this, most of NixClan is wary of cats emerging from that area, lest they let their guards down and find themselves with one less life on their leader’s tally.

Traditions/Practices

Many leaders have a ‘secondary’ or nickname that their family/close friends/deputy will take to using while they are around. Most are simply the cat’s prefix, dropping the ‘star’ entirely until they have passed on to StarClan. The only notable outlier to this tradition is Phoenix, who is simply known as Phoenix by the entire clan (only Elders/New Cats really use ‘Phoenixstar’, and even then it makes him Uncomfortable)
The Deputy in NixClan is often the Leader’s mate, sibling, or most trusted friend, though it is not uncommon for the clan to go without a Deputy, sometimes even for entire leader’s lives. Molly was a notable example of this, having not had a Deputy at all, even when her and Phoenixfire became her mate (mainly due to the wishes of Phoenixfire who did not wish to take on such a role)

Legend of AbyssClan

Within NixClan there's a legend stemming from the nearby ravine, just outside the territory, that seems so deep that the bottom is pitch black and any attempt at dropping items into it end with what feels like forever before there's finally a faint tink of it hitting the bottom.
Even with the put being so deep and dark, it always seems that cats appear around it, almost as if emerging from it's depths.
Because of this, elders call the area around and within the ravine home to 'AbyssClan', a clan that lives at the very bottom of the pit who send scouts to the surface to protect they land they control and call home in a way unbeknownst to NixClan cats.
Past generations understand that is truly happening with the ravine, but that knowledge has been lost to time, and now all that remains is the old wives tail tale of AbyssClan, and so that is what is told to young apprentices.
It is considered bad luck to get close to the put for fear of an AbyssClan ambush like the one that is what ended the life of previous leader Beetlestar, and any kit born facing the pit is considered destined to be an ancestor to one of the emerged AbyssClan leaders.

Phoenix (Leader)

Phoenix would, by most, be described as an ideal leader. He's confident, smart, and amazing at de-escalation. He has an air of power, his call can turn heads all to him, and his emotional and mental strength, even in the most taxing situations, is absolutely something to look up to. Nothing stands in the way of Phoenix, and he will protect others with his very life, though it's not often to come to that, considering his ability to talk his way through even the toughest cat's hostility. He's a leader to look up to and revere, and is truly a role model for all.
In reality he's a moron. An entire dumbheck. He's got but 1 braincell. He bullstinks his way through life and becoming the leader was almost entirely because of his power to bullstink. It takes him 5 years and 10 people telling him to realize he loves his deputy and honestly, he's just an idiot. He's selfless, stupidly sweet, and dangerously trusting/naive. He seems to always see the best in others and trusts with his whole heart. He's really just a walking disaster, but he's very good at bullstinking and it normally turns out pretty okay, all things considered.
Also he probably cries himself to sleep every time someone is hurt, even if it wasn't his fault. Beetle's passing weighs heavily on him, having been their co-deputy (Not a real role but he was basically considered a second deputy, all considered.) and being the closest to them when their life was ripped away. He has nightmares about it semi-regularly, and will normally confide in apprentices about his woes.
He also has a habit of 'adopting' apprentices that show great promise, taking them under his metaphorical wing to personally train. These apprentices often end up picking up habits/traits of Phoenix's (most often the Great At Bullstinking trait and/or the Louder = Smarter)
In the end: He's a mess, and he just wants to love and be loved, honestly. Love him and be loved by him, he's a baby childe.
OH ONE LAST THING: He's a descendant of Phoenixfire, their whole family the eldest boy was given the prefix Phoenix and are normally the leaders of NixClan, he wasn't last time cause he's only been born semi-recently, he's pretty young (24 moons) and Beetle was leader for around 36-40 moons, so they stayed leader even after he was old enough to take over cause Beetle was G r e a t, honestly???

Just as a few other things, all of the cats mentioned in the About section, sans Phoenix, are all dead, basically. Beetle was the former leader that has just passed after a sudden attack from a cat 'from AbyssClan' (AKA just a loner) and the others were the founders

I'd also prefer color-ins, as it can be hard to visualize new characters for me from descriptions and images are also hard to connect with ;w;

Oh! And (not so) final note, I do have a sorta? Specific idea of Phoenix in my mind? I'll pop those here: Eyes + Body/Color just since I had to look

mothpeak had always been told by his advisors- especially his mother- that he was destined for something more. something bigger than him- something bigger than all of them. he learned quickly that he was meant to be a leader rather than a follower, an alpha among betas and omegas alike. despite the training and the whispers and side glances, mothpeak never felt like he was quite where he was supposed to be. there was always a voice in the back of his head chewing away at his confidence, reminding him that he would never make it as the leader everyone said he was. he’d be fine with a magnus role. he never needed power- it oftentimes got to the heads of other cats and that wasn’t his intentions. he wasn’t allowing himself to fall into the trap of leadership and vain; the word ‘jaded’ would never enter his vocabulary.

and in the moons leading up to his renaming, he could almost sense it. his dreams became more lucid. he could taste the shrews in his sleep, could feel the moss on the pads of his paws. and then, of course, there were the messages. cats he couldn’t quite make out felt familiar, almost as if he had known them in some other lifetime. they left him a countdown, the days swindling down to nothing as he came closer and closer to the unknown.

when it finally did happen, there was so much light. he could remember his eyes wide open with nine shadowy, almost glowing figures, circled around him as he stood in the middle of the field right outside of his den. but the colours- vibrant and vivid and unlike anything he had ever seen before. the wind startled him. it was a force he had never felt before, but his paws seemed to be rooted to the ground, dug deep into the earth like he were a hundred year old oak tree, standing tall and strong and stoic. in that moment, surrounded by the lights and the souls of these unrecognizable cats… it all clicked. the sound of the wind was the voices of these nine ancestors feeding him all of the information he’d need to start off with. memories of his training flooded into his mind, rejuvenating his youthful spirit and replenishing his energy.

as quick as it had started, it was over. he had spent moons waiting and theorizing for it to all be over in a matter of seconds. when it finished, it was like a light was flicked off. nothingness. just himself. however, he wasn’t… just himself. mothpeak was a name of his past, now.

hemlock.

his eyes flew open, and all at once the terms and phrases used to describe this new way of life flooded his train of thought.

hemlockastrum.

and so he tried it on his tongue. “hemlockastrum.” for such an unusual name, it flowed. it felt right, as if it completed him and now he had to return the favour. there was also the feeling of… an undeniable strength. it was a remarkable sense of health, something like he could take on the world and start an undefeated streak.

so perhaps that was that. this was the start of a long, treacherous journey to build something beautiful out of nothing.

but never will that voice in the back of his head leave. it’s inescapable.
