That’s no way to treat your master!” She hissed, but the pup only cocked his head to one side. “Alright, fine. That’s no way to treat a friend, Archipelago.”. The pup, once again, cocked his head to one side, making a confused whine. “Alright, do you want me to call you something short, like Archie?” Maria sighed, and the pup wagged his tail profusely. Maria scratched Archie’s chin and smiled, saying “That’s a good boy, Archie.”.

Gweyn sat high on a hill watching his new home come alive with the mid-morning sun. It wasn't very exciting, but Kirin had promised after the next few moon cycles, he'd be able to start apprenticeship.

Part of him hoped The Ascended, Nephilim, Kirin had called him, trained with him. He could see the honey blonde curls coming out of the Pantry with his trusted sword (or basically a slab of metal) secured to his hip. He looked beautiful in the sunlight, an angel.

Or perhaps Andromeda would teach him medicine. The Healer was kind and had let Gweyn sit in her study the day he arrived. He couldn't read very well, so she helped him along. Kirin said Fey didn't help from anyone. He hadn't gone back to Andromeda since, but he wanted to.

Sheena and Derek were training in the empty fields, using tree branches as swords. Derek laughed and sent a burst of blue magic hurtling toward the consul but she dodged it. Then her makeshift sword knocked his legs out from under him. She said something that made her smile sharply. Then she helped him up and tried again. Gweyn looked down at his hands. Kirin could do magic. He promised to teach him when he was old enough. He sometimes wondered whether his mother and father could do magic too. Gweyn didn't remember much about them. He wished he could.

Henrietta sat down in the field with her flowers. Her long blue hair was tied in a long braid that reached the ground. She had tied some flowers into it, as well as up and round her tan horns. Henry was nice. She and Kirin talked a lot. Kirin never talked to anyone, so she must've been special. He didn't like The Ascended. That confused Gweyn, because he was the leader. "I will never bow to a Nephilim." He'd said one day while showing Gweyn around the territory. "And you shouldn't either, little Prince. For we are Fey, and Fey never bow." Gweyn wasn't a prince. Gweyn wasn't Fey. Kirin was.

"Are you ready for your lessons, little prince?" Like a ghost, Kirin materialized beside him. His hair was nearly style in elegant knots. There were flowers subtly hidden within them. Gweyn also noticed the slight pink stain on his cheeks.

"Were you with Henrietta?" Gweyn asked.

Kirin tipped his chin up to the sky, smiling. "You ask too many questions."

"You told me to ask questions, Kirin."

"So I did, little prince. So I did."

It was winter and yet there was no snow. N'kolas had been surprised to learn that yes, it really was this warm year-round (except for the summer when it was unbearably hot) but now, it almost seemed normal. Pleasant. In fact, he would have loved to be outside and exploring in the sun. Except he had a dragon to care for.

"When do you estimate Karry'll be finished growing?" N'kolas asked as Weyrlingmaster F'dust passed by him. The weyrlings were washing and oiling their dragons, as they had been doing almost every day for the past month. After the first week, the Weyrlingmaster had determined the dragons large enough to not require a daily washing, although dry spots were still oiled every day while the dragons got the full treatment once per week.

The Weyrlingmaster shrugged apologetically. "I'm not entirely sure," he said. "Hosurth and Borinth reached their full growths by about a turn, so Karoth should, too. But each dragon is different so maybe he'll reach maturity a little before or a little after."

N'kolas smiled. "It's good," he said. "Hear that?" he asked Karoth. "In a year you'll be chasing the ladies."

I don't want to chase human females, said Karoth, turning his head to face N'kolas. Why do I need them?

N'kolas facepalmed. Beside him, T'gin chuckled. "Noneth doesn't understand sarcasm," he said, wiping his hands on a wet rag. "It gets annoying at times, especially when he asks if I'm alright."

"Hopefully as they grow older, they'll understand more," replied N'kolas.

T'gin looked as though he were about to reply when the Weyrlingmaster called for the weyrlings to begin putting away their cleaning supplies. The T'gin and N'kolas looked at each other, shrugged, and put away their supplies neatly and efficiently. Just as they'd been taught after the first few days.

Weyrlingmaster F'dust went around to check everyone's state of cleanliness and also to make sure that the dragons had been thoroughly washed and oiled. If they weren't, he would punish them, often through physical labor. Making sure your dragon's hide was completely oiled was a necessary habit to get into, he kept repeating, because a cracked hide could lead to infection when dragons started going between. Thankfully, it seemed as though no one had been careless enough to miss a spot. N'kolas had become so paranoid that he often would ask Karoth five or six times to make sure that the dragon was comfortable and that there were no cracks or other problems in odd places.

"Alright," said the Weyrlingmaster, evidently satisfied. "Now we're going to have a chat with Master Healer Shollun about dragon anatomy, basic dragon healing, etcetera." Everyone groaned. The last time they had a "chat" they'd learned about the glories of dragon indigestion, how to prevent it, and how to solve it. While Master Shollun was no expert on dragons, he had enough experience to deal with most basic problems. "This will hopefully be a bit more exciting, and you'll want to know how to deal with all the bumps, bruises, and sores that come from a dragon growing and testing his or her limits."

I think it's good if you listen to old-healer-man, said Karoth. As with most dragons, he had a poor memory for many human names but sent a picture of Master Shollun to N'kolas along with a series of impressions, both good and bad. I want you to be with me, not him.

N'kolas had to stifle a grin at his dragon's childishness. Just like a toddler, he thought with amusement. "Of course I'll be with you always," he said reassuringly with a pat on Karoth's side. "Even if I have to take you in for a check-up."

Dusteah giggled as she reached out for the toy dangling in her mother's grasp. "Amamama," she complained. Soyah leaned in closer but jerked her head away as her daughter's hand shot towards her eyes.

"Look! F'dust!" Soyah said excitedly. Dusteah babbled again and Soyah jerked. "Oh, yes, here's your toy!" she said.

"What is it?" called F'dust from the living room, where he was fiddling with one of the puzzles made by Ayal.

"Look at Teya's eyes!"

F'dust frowned and stood, walking over to where Soyah and Teya sat in the kitchen. When he looked into the baby's eyes, he gasped. "They're purple!" he exclaimed.

"I know!" said Soyah. "Isn't that so strange? I'll have to ask one of the Healers if they know about this. It might be the same condition that Kali has, but Teya's not sensitive to light. As far as I know."

Why worry? butted in Borinth. If your offspring is healthy, what is there to worry about?

Soyah smiled with the far-off glance that F'dust recognized as her talking to her dragon. It's simply exciting. That's all, she replied. Humans don't normally have purple eyes.

"Our little girl is going to have such beautiful eyes when she's older," murmured F'dust. "Aren't you?" He tickled Teya under the chin and she squealed with happiness.

It was a nice spring day. Chilly, but nothing else could be expected when one was out on the water. Jesni called out orders and the Fishercrafters scrambled to follow them. Even Eshni and Ermid, who she had invited on the day's outing. She watched as Eshni leaned forward and held her hand out for a few moments and smiled. Her little girl had grown up so fast (although it felt as though she couldn't wait for Ester and Sharon to be old enough to play on their own) and was now really starting to understand what it meant to be an adult. Eshni and Ermid had been unofficially courting for a while--everyone could read their flushed faces and almost-smiles when the other's name was mentioned--but a few weeks ago, had announced their intentions. Ershar had joked to Jesni that he expected the marriage to be any day now.

"Keep your eyes on the sail!" she called out to Balidosh. The youth was visibly dragged from his daydreams and gripped the rope tighter. "If you aren't watching, it's easy for it to move and take us in the wrong direction." He looked up and, noticing that the sail was straying from where Jesni wanted it, worked hurriedly to fix it.

Jesni smiled to herself. Life felt much like sailing or crewing a ship; you did your best to keep order, had to ensure that everyone else knew what they were doing in relation to you, but also had to deal with any unexpected events such as storms or bad tides. Or, as Beallolril had put it once, very fun and very scary. He had a habit of putting such emotional sentiments into short and easy sentences. It was very sweet.

Kaliliarrah's heart pounded in her chest. It was a decently large service, with all of her (and Saltul's) friends and their families attending. She had specifically requested an Earth-like service, as she had always found their marriage traditions very romantic. Saltul had agreed and now they were dressed in whites and blacks, holding hands, delicately carved wooden rings on their fingers.

"You may now kiss the bride," intoned Waxinnan.

Saltul leaned forward and the world fell away.

"Excuse me?" asked Rorria softly, heart beating so rapidly she thought she might begin hyperventilating.

Salano, who was sitting at a table, looked up from where she was supervising the younger weyrbrats' naps. "Come in!" she replied in a quiet voice. "Has the Weyrlingmaster run out of tasks for you?"

Rorria snorted with amusement. "He gave us a day off. He does that, sometimes." And Sia's asleep, she didn't add. But she wouldn't have come had her green been awake. She would have pushed for Rorria to come out and talk, as she had been doing for a couple of sevendays now. She inched into the room, leaning against the wall.

Salano smiled. "What is it that you came to me for?"

Rorria opened her mouth but no sound came out. Did she dare share her feelings? What if the older woman had nothing to say? No advice to give? No way to help? But it had been a few months now, and she still couldn't prevent the flutter of her heart when she saw Fella, Starcraft apprentice. Now, the fact that she loved a woman was no problem; the problem was that she was a dragonrider and Fella...wasn't. What if Fella got jealous that Rorria spent so much time with Siarlith? What if she didn't support what happened during mating flights? What if Fella wanted to become a dragonrider with Rorria but was passed over by a dragon? Or worse, what if she simply didn't reciprocate Rorria's feelings?

Wedassea came into the room and Rorria jumped as she saw the other woman seemingly emerge from the shadows.

"I'm sorry if I startled you!" exclaimed Wedassea, putting her right hand on her chest. "Come in, sit down, just don't wake the lil'uns."

Rorria's face was a mask as she worked up the courage to speak. She sat down at the table across from Salano and Wedassea and clenched her fists. Then relaxed them. Clench. Relax. "I'm...in love with Fella," she said finally. Quietly. "And I don't know what to do." She could feel tears at the corners of her eyes and for a moment, she hated her body's weakness. Unconsciously she hunched her shoulders slightly in a protective motion.

"Oh darling," said Wedassea softly, placing her warm, frail hand atop Rorria's cold, firm hand. "Talk to us."

Rorria sniffled. "I'm scared," she whispered. "I'm a dragonrider and she's not. I'm scared that she'll say no. I'm scared that she'd be jealous of me and Siarlith but I love Sia and she's always there and she's always with me and I couldn't live without her!" Here, her voice had gotten louder with emotion for a moment before she glanced around guiltily. Here and there, a baby sniffled or snored but none woke up. "I don't want to have to choose between Sia and Fella."

Salano and Wedassea shared a look. "Rorria," said Salano, "I know that you might not like this, but you have two choices. One: you can go on hiding this. Fella will never know, and the worst you'll feel is the uncertainty of not knowing what could have been. Two: you can tell Fella. We can be there with you! She might reject you. But she also might not. And listen to me now." Salano held Rorria's gaze and there was something...hypnotically powerful about it. "No matter who you love, if they come between you and your dragon, know who's more important. Because as you said, Siarlith will be there with you for the rest of your life. You're bonded far more deeply than most can recognize. It's an amazing thing that you're experiencing." Salano's voice cracked and Rorria wondered what it was that made the older woman so sure on this issue. "If you decide to tell Fella that you love her, and if she doesn't love the whole--because you and Siarlith are two parts of one whole--then she wasn't good enough for you in the first place. Remember that."

Rorria swallowed. "I will," she whispered. "Thank you." She stood up and walked out of the room; she knew what she had to do.

Not right now. Maybe after her apprenticeship had finished. But maybe someday. It was a crushing heartbreak but Siarlith was there to comfort and reassure her that they'd be together always and that they would face each challenge and come out stronger. There was still hope. But not right now.

"Everyone mount up!" bellowed F'dust, feeling a sense of deja-vu. I remember when I rode you the first time, he said fondly to Kimorth.

That was fun! his brown replied in agreement. I'm worried that the dragonets won't fly well, he said suddenly. Some of them are too eager.

We'll fix that if it becomes a problem, said F'dust grimly. He didn't need any riders falling off because a dragonet wanted to dive or make a sharp turn unprompted. Or worse, have a dragon-rider pair die because they attempted to go between without supervision. He didn't think that his class had been so bad. Had they? "Straps?" he yelled.

"Check!" the weyrlings yelled back in chorus. F'dust was proud; they had been working on formations for a few sevendays and despite the difference in ages, they had all done well.

"Helmets on?"

"Check!"

"Dragons ready?"

"Ready!"

"When I give the signal, all dragons go!" Kimorth leaped into the air, pumping his wings to gain altitude. Once F'dust felt reasonable confident that no one would crash into him, he gave the signal through Kimorth. Pride blossomed as he watched the five dragons ascend, riders whooping and hollering all the way.

Aiden was his best man, Orgon standing patiently beside him. Fay was her bridesmaid, Lilac sitting on her shoulder. Kyniken held Pepper's trembling hands and winked at Baxter who was hovering beside them.

I love you, he wanted to whisper, but Eshni was still talking. More than anything else, I love you. They had decided to both take Pepper's last name, a way of denoting which family she had come from. Though the precise meaning was lost to time, it would be a unique way to introduce themselves and any future children.

"You may kiss the bride."

Kyniken and Pepper leaned in to the cheers of the small gathering that included their closest friends and Miklo, his mother, when he literally felt the earth tremble beneath his feet. As they pulled away, he raised an eyebrow and Pepper gave a quick shake of her head. He squinted at Aiden and Fay, who looked back with neutral expressions, although Fay's lips were twitching. Hmph.

Winter
Winter is here! During winter, your villagers will likely catch even less prey and the odds of deaths during births will continue to rise. In addition, they are far more prone to catching sickness and are more likely to die from even a mild cold if not taken care of properly.

People look around, wondering where time went. It was fall only yesterday, it seems. But all they can do is move on.

During the spring, birthings will be smooth and the chances of mothers or children dying during birth will drop dramatically. There is also a higher chance of catching more prey or finding new people and skilled animals looking for shelter, and the odds of sickness will drop.

"She's perfect." Seraphim's eyes hadn't left Zaida's since they brought her back to Hawk Ridge. The small human, her human, stared back into Seraphim's eyes, mutual adoration plainly on both adult and child. Elora almost felt like she was intruding, disturbing a private moment between father and daughter. She felt like an outsider, just for a moment, unsure if this had been a good idea. It all happened what seemed like so fast - in just a year, they had adopted Zaida from a nearby city.

But as many doubts as Elora had, she also felt reassured. "Come over here," Seraphim said softly, holding his arm open for Elora, keeping his other next to Zaida, holding a small toy out for the one year old. Elora allowed Seraphim to tuck her under his arm, wrapping her own arm around his back. As Elora came closer, Zaida turned her big eyed gaze to her, her eyes searching Elora's, almost as if she was talking without words. It seemed like a lot of wisdom for a baby, and Elora found herself staring into Zaida's eyes for what seemed like a lifetime.

"She loves you already, you know," Seraphim's voice was only a whisper, but his voice rumbled in his chest, reverberating against where Elora was against him. "She's perfect," he echoed once again, but his gaze had left Zaida, and he was now looking at Elora, his eyes alight with happiness. "You're perfect," he whispered, sighing against Elora and holding her tighter.

They were a family, the three of them. And they would always have each other.

The nursery gained another, though it had already been made big enough to accommodate more people. Zaida was very welcome between Neru and Vida, and so was Clarissa, who had just learned that she and Paradox were expecting their own addition to Hawk Ridge.

"They'll be the future of this village," Seraphim said between his whistling tunes as they worked on more huts. "I bet the four of the kids we have will be the next generation of chiefs - Zaida will be just like you, I can tell. You were a match made by the higher powers - your personalities are so alike! Pierce would be our Scout Chief, he's very observant. Ivy would make a wonderful warrior or hunting chief, whichever she wants to choose - even for someone who can hardly form a singular word, she's got a lot of strategy." Elora turned to him in exasperation at that statement, her eyebrows raised. "No! I'm serious!" Seraphim laughed, holding up his hands. "She beat me at our game of peekaboo by taking away my hands and holding them in her little vice-like fingers."

"Beaten by a child," Elora shook her head, laughing at Seraphim. "Oh, Seraphim. What hunter-like reflexes you possess..."

Seraphim laughed, poking at Elora teasingly. "Anyway, I think Theo will be a scholar - a Shaman, most likely, though I can already tell Aelys' love of plants is spreading to him, even though he's not his son. Theo and Aelys really seem to like talking to each other. Well, as much as Theo can talk. And the kid really likes the books we have, even the ones meant for adults."

"They'll all be the best additions for the village, regardless of what they choose," Elora offered, a smile across her lips as she thought of Zaida following in her footsteps, becoming the next head chief of Hawk Ridge. "I can't wait to see them grow up."
