Summer
Summer is here! During summer, your villagers are likely to catch even more prey and the odds of deaths during births will continue to drop.

Summer is winding down. By now, villagers will have noticed a chill in the air and a pickup in the winds. For some, leaves will show hints of red and yellow, announcing the advent of fall. Healers by all names will wish to study so that they can care for their charges as the harsher seasons arrive.

Over the past two turns, Seanni had gone looking for suitable candidates. Fedust, a young man from a cothold, had wished to join the Weyrhold and had asked if his family could join him if he Impressed a dragon. Seanni had agreed, of course, as they would be helpful in helping to manage the food supplies of the Weyrhold. Then, Rosanth had mated and clutched five eggs, one of which was a gold. This spurred several other cotholds to send in their children as potential candidates. Siblings Sedah and Zeyku were seen as especially promising, as they boasted several dragonriding relatives at nearby Weyrs and Weyrholds.

During the months that Rosanth's eggs hardened, Seanni and N'reg helped the ten candidates that had been sent in to acclimate to the Weyrhold's lifestyle. Near the two month mark, Seanni noticed that Rosanth had stopped paying attention to one egg. Despite knowing that it was unlikely to hatch, the Weyrwoman decided to care for it herself. Finally, the day of Impression arrived.

Soyah saw as Weyrwoman Seanni visibly catch her breath as the humming increased in pitch. Soyah stood in a semicircle around the five eggs, stealing glances at the other candidates. Fedust, a tall boy who was slightly older than she was, looked confident, the sort of trait that was supposed to attract dragonets. She took a breath and stood taller. Maybe she would Impress the gold! It was every dragonloving girl's dream, even though clutches were rare and gold eggs even more so.

Soyah looked around again, taking in the massive gold and bronze lying just across from her and giggled as she saw Predath's nose twitch as a brown fire-lizard settled on it. The three fire-lizards, too, were humming, though in a much higher pitch than the dragons. The only other sounds were the breathing of the candidates and weyrfolk, and the occasional sneeze or cough. Then, the eggs started to move.

One egg, a particularly large and mottled one, began to tremble and the candidates leaned forward in anticipation. Soyah held her breath as the shell began to crack. A brown nose forced its way out and soon, the large and ungainly brown dragonet fell to the sandy ground. The five boys stepped forward almost as one and the dragonet creeled, a sound that made Soyah cringe. She turned away, however, as three other eggs were cracking as well. The queen dragonet stepped out of her shell delicately and briefly caught Soyah's eye. But then, the moment was gone and Sedah, one of the other female candidates, cried out the name Zerith in joy.

Soyah's eyes filled with tears but she held tall. Why wasn't I good enough? she thought at the gold dragonet angrily. Why didn't you choose me?

Do you...do you not want me? came a plaintive voice. Soyah turned her head and knelt down to meet the whirling eyes of a small green dragonet. Don't you love me?

"Of course I do, Borinth!" exclaimed Soyah, falling to her knees and embracing her dragon. Her green dragon. Her Borinth. "And nothing will ever change that." Her tears were now happy ones. Yeah, so she didn't Impress the queen. All that mattered was that the little green in front of her had chosen her. She had been sought out by a dragon. And wasn't that all that mattered?

Now
"Everybody form up!" bellowed N'reg, stopping at the front of the weyrling barracks where the four weyrlings were playing a card game just outside. The bronzerider had no fear of waking up their dragonets as he knew from experience that they would be asleep for a few more hours.

The weyrlings scrambled up from their game and arranged themselves into a sloppy line with Sedah at the far left (to N'reg's eyes), Soyah at the far right, and F'dust and Ze'ku standing next to the goldrider and greenrider respectively. N'reg felt a brief moment of nausea as he realized that their Weyr would likely be severely inbred for several generations before shaking it off. They had plenty of time to build up good relationships with the various Weyrs in the South and hopefully trade for a bronze or brown egg.

"Today," said N'reg slightly quieter, "we will be learning from Master Healer Shollun the intricacies of a dragon's physiology. These studies will be continuing throughout your weyrlinghood, as only by understanding a dragon's body can you better understand your dragon's complaints and can recognize their problems before they tell you anything's wrong. None of you are squeamish," he said, looking from eager face to face, "and both I and Master Shollun expect your full participation. Understand?" Four heads nodded quickly. "Get going! Seanni and I will care for your dragons' hunger while you study."

Soyah jogged down the beaten path around the South Tower, where the Weyrwoman and the Weyrleader lived. Borinth ran up ahead, just barely behind the queen, Zerith, who was leading the pack of dragons in their morning run. It was for building up their muscles, Weyrwoman Seanni had explained. Once the dragons were just over a turn old, they would start practicing flying straight. Once they were sure that the dragons had that down, they could start going between.

A shiver ran down Soyah's spine--and it wasn't from the sweat that dripped down her back. Going between was the hallmark of a dragonrider, the legendary skill that had saved Pern from Thread for countless centuries. To think that they would be learning the skill in just under two turns was... Well it was frightening. But also liberating. The thought of going anywhere on the planet and beyond thrilled her.

"You know," puffed Sedah, "I'm supposed to be the goldrider and leader and blah blah blah but here I am barely keeping pace." Almost every word was punctuated with a breath and Soyah felt a moment of pity for the pale blonde. Sedah gave the greenrider a grin. "I can't believe you haven't changed your pace."

"Practice," responded Soyah with a grin in return. "Practice and lots of running away from annoying younger siblings who refuse to take 'no' for an answer." Sedah laughed and Soyah felt a flush of warmth. Some months ago, she might have resented Sedah for Impressing the queen. Now? All she felt was a sense of comradery and after hearing about some of the classes that Weyrwoman Seanni had dragged Sedah off to had cemented the idea that being a queenrider simply wasn't in her. And that was fine with Soyah. Borinth, who sent a feeling of encouragement in that moment, was perfect in every way that mattered.

Eshni and her younger adopted brother, Beallolril (or Ril for short), sat on the steps of their house. "Didja know that mom's gonna take me fishing tomorrow?" asked Eshni, turning her head downwards and to the left to address her brother. "I've always wanted to sail on her boat!"

"Why can't I come?" whined Ril, leaning against his sister and holding her leg.

"Because it's dangerous!" said Eshni, patting him on the head. "There might be storms, huge waves, and even monster dolphins." Of course, she knew that there were no such things but it never hurt to encourage a little fear if it got Ril off her back for just one day.

"Then stay with me!"

Eshni tried hard not to laugh. She really did try but a small giggle escaped her nonetheless. "I can't," she said once she had calmed down, patting Ril again. "But I promise that I'll call the good dolphins if I need help, okay?"

"Okay," said Ril happily. "Can I talk to the dolphins? I wanna hear them speak!"

Eshni thought. "Mmmaybe once we get back, I could ask mom?"

"Yeah!!"

"The pain will pass," said Shollun calmly as he stood over Seanni. The Weyrwoman was lying on her back in the hospital wing of the North Tower that the Healer had made his own. She was trembling from the pain of labor but retained enough fire to avoid crying out. N'reg was pacing nearby, worried for his weyrmate. Just outside the tower, Rosanth let out a bugle every now and then. It was a tense time and all they could do was wait. "Eshni?" he asked, looking around.

"Yes, Master Healer Shollun?" came the prompt response from behind him. Eshni had volunteered to help in the delivery, much to the surprise of her parents and Shollun.

Shollun gave a small smile of amusement at the title. The girl had grown up fast. "Please go run to Renolla and ask for some herbal tea. Something strong, please. Tell her it's for Seanni."

Eshni nodded and turned on her heel. She sprinted out the wing as quickly as she could and Shollun rolled his eyes. Hopefully she would be more careful on the way back up. Turning back to Seanni, he grabbed a hand and squeezed comfortingly. "Soon, the birth will be over and you'll have a wonderful baby to hold."

"I know," said Seanni through gritted teeth. "Sharding baby seems unsure if they want to come out, though!"

N'reg laughed nervously. "Imagine what the weyrlings will say when they learn they're going to be trained in caring for babies as well!"

Seanni huffed. "What, like they aren't already between you and their dragon?"

Shollun laughed softly, earning a glare from N'reg. In response, he simply raised his brows and shrugged good-naturedly. He glanced back at the exit to the wing briefly. Now where was that child?

Fall
Fall is here! During fall, birthings will be difficult and the chances of mothers or children dying during birth will rise dramatically without the help of a skilled shaman. There is also a lessened chance of catching more prey or finding new people and skilled animals and the odds of sickness will rise.

Fall has unmistakably arrived. It's harvest season now, and farmers should take good care of their crops. Patrols will be more dangerous and hunting or gathering missions will yield less food. However, children will look at the multicolored leaves with wonder and will be excited for the upcoming snows.

Cassandra was finishing putting together her bag of supplies for her voyage to the mainland (primarily fish to attempt to trade and also eat), when Tyler and Vanellope approached her. "What can I do for you two?" Cassandra asked, ears pricking up as she tied her bag closed. Vannellope spoke first, the pink-haired werewolf taking a deep breath as she began "Tyler and I have been talking. We know neither of us can bear children, we, we had Finnick help us determine, so, we would be unable to have a foster mother, or a foster father." Here, Tyler took over. "We were wondering if you could ask around town. Children are sometimes abandoned, or left orphaned. With your blessing, we would like to adopt a child."

Cassandra smiled, tails flicking upwards happily "Of course! I mean really, how could I say no to that sort of thing?" she tilted her head, studying them "Now, I'm guessing you want a land-species, yes?" Vanellope smiled "Well, as neither of us have the means to train an underwater-species, and neither Finnick nor Krill have the free time to watch it, then, yes. Biped would be preferred of course, as it is what we are most familiar with, and a human well..." color dashed her cheeks "A human we could turn into a were once it was old enough, but, any available child. Any species, land-based of course, we are willing and able to take in."

Although she appreciated his company, Emma thought of Benjamin as being lazy. He didn't take his job as seriously as she did. She complained about it to Alina once but she seemed to have a liking towards him. Emma didn't mind that much and went about business as usual.

She woke early one morning and gathered her things before leaving the house. The watermelon seeds were growing well and she expected actual watermelons soon. As she walked, Muffin arose and followed her along. As she got closer to the patch, she threw a stick for him to keep him busy. He didn't return after that and she figured he went back to Celeste's house. She walked over to the seed patch and stepped inside. She dropped her belongings in shock. Not one, not two but FOUR big melons. She was so shocked and bewildered she yelled and jumped in the air.

"Waah! So many watermelons! The seeds worked!" she squeaked.
"Quiet down, child. Some people are trying to sleep..." a grumbling voice that could only be Ida.
"But, Ida you are going for your walk," she replied. Ida grumbled again in response. Before she left, Emma managed to show the melons to her. She was rather impressed. Afterwords, Emma picked them and put them with the rest of the food.

Later that day, Emma found Benjamin and told him what happened. "Well, I'm happy to hear they worked," he said.
"Benjamin, let's plant more seeds," she said.
"Wha- So soon?"
"These ones worked so more should as well! Come, let's go!" she shouted. She grabbed him by the arm and led him along. Then the whole seed process started all over again. This time, they were expecting apples.
