Hailstar paused mid-sentence. He had scented a familiar sour scent. It was stale, but only by a few days. He glanced down, and saw equally familiar five-toed tracks in the mud. The other members of his patrol looked at him confused. He smiled, and resumed talking, subtly sweeping the tracks away with his tail. No good would come of worrying his newest warriors.

Samuel was finally getting used to the swampy environment. He had figured out how to move without tripping every other step, and the smell didn’t bother him as much as it used to. The fur around his neck- previously shorter due to his collar- had grown to the same length as the rest of his fur. Granted, it was not a very long length, but still.

He was interrupted from his musings by the approach of Snowstone, who was followed by Foudre. Samuel guessed this must be the rest of the patrol he was scheduled for. He dipped his head in greeting. Snowstone returned the gesture, before speaking.

“We’ll hunt around One-Tree Hill. We haven’t sent anyone up there for a while, so we should get a good haul.”

With that, Snowstone exited the camp and turned north. Samuel and Foudre followed. As they walked, an uncomfortable silence began to grow. Finally, unable to bear it, Samuel searched for a topic to talk about.

“So, uhh… Foudre. That’s an unusual name.”

Foudre turned his mismatched eyes to Samuel. “So’s yours.”

“Uhm, yeah- I- I suppose it is.”

Foudre turned his head forward again. Oh no. The silence was back. Samuel tried again.

“I was a housecat- or, uh, kittypet, I guess you’d call it. My housefolk gave me the name. What about you?”

Foudre shrugged. “M’ mum’s from someplace far from ‘ere. Sh’d diff’rent names f’things.” He looked towards Samuel. “It means lightning. M’name, that is.”

“Oh! That- that’s cool! I- I don’t know what my name means, or even if it means anything. I… maybe I should’ve taken a clan name, back when I joined…” Samuel looked at the ground with a furrowed brow.

Foudre huffed, and bumped Samuel with his shoulder. “Hey. T’s alright. I c’nsidered takin’ a clan name when I joined, but m’ name’s m’ name. I’ve always been Foudre. An’ yer name’s yer name. Yer Samuel. That’s fine.”

Samuel gave a small smile. “Thanks, Foudre. That’s nice.” Foudre huffed and turned away from Samuel, but he did so with a smile, and he flicked his tail at Samuel’s leg. A silence settled over them again, but it was a comfortable one this time.

Neither of them noticed the five-toed prints. The mud churned up by the cats’ paws covered them over.

the mourning of the loss of the four toms.

basspelt's body being dragged back to camp by whitespring. gingerpelt goes absolutely bonkers, sobbing & wailing her eyes out, and whimbrelface attempts to comfort her but has to fight back his own tears at the sight of their brother.

beaverbrook's body being dragged back to camp by crowpaw, gracklepaw, and currasowpaw. squirrelnose & marmotscamper attempt to keep their cries quiet to not alert their mother, but she had scented the blood mixed with beaverbrook's scent. lunawing leaves winkkit in the nursery with rosebriar and flings herself onto the body of her firstborn son as she cries.

basilfloof & parsleypaw freaking about the two-legs taking thymepaw.

flareblood crying for the loss of his recently found brother blastburn, who was also taken by the two-legs. orchidstem & fleurcurl support him. mallowsun attempts to comfort him, only for the stress to trigger her labor.

it was just another normal day for the cats of the angelic clan; morning patrols had just returned to the camp, and there was plenty of prey to fill everyone's bellies as the sun had risen to its highest point in the sky. but a feminine voice shrieked loudly from a cat that raced into the abandoned church's auditorium hall, calling out the names of four cats, the only felines in the clan who would recognize her voice. the first cat to rise from her nest was the messenger damseldance, the orange and white tabby hurrying to approach the older black bicolor molly, their olive eyes meeting almost immediately. "sunspots, is everything alright? why are you here? you're so tense, your body is practically shaking." the shorthair molly reached forward to smooth the fluff that stood up on the other's head, but she was pushed away, the olive green eyes that she knew filled with a frantic sort of fear. "i-i can't say it more than once. please damseldance, please get your siblings..." the ginger molly couldnt help the worry that filled the pit of her stomach at these words, but she trotted quickly around the camp, getting the other three cats that sunspots had called for, the three cats that, while not biologically related to her, she considered to be her siblings as they had all grown up together. alongside the tortoiseshell and two ginger mackerel tabbies, she returned to the older molly's side, all four of the young cats filled with worry, knowing that this couldnt be good, if the mother of all of their mates was coming to them all at once.

fritillarywhisker couldnt help the nervous way her fluffy tail twitched from side to side as she waited for momma to speak, with the two toms on either side of her pressed closer in an attempt to comfort her. sunspots looked as though she would cry as she spoke again "tangfin, waspsting was lost during a patrol due to a sudden storm and we have to find her. damseldance, marbleswirl was badly injured by an attack on a family of foxes and could use your support to give her strength. fritillarywhisker, salamandersight is a complete wreck and he needs your comfort. dianthusbounce, the news of silverwind is the worst i'm afraid, for the same foxes that wounded marbleswirl took silverwind's life.." the wail that escaped from dianthusbounce's muzzle at this news was enough to send chills down the spines of every cat who heard it, and only the approach of the celestial being clan's archangel satinstar quieted the sobs ever so slightly. "i am terribly sorry for all of your losses; i cannot imagine the depths of your pain. damseldance, fritillarywhisker, tangfin, and dianthusbounce, please take as much time as you need to cope with all of this. go spend a moon in islandclan and be with your loved ones and their family." sunspots murmured a quiet thank you to the leader, and with a bowing of her head, she gestured silently for the four younger cats to follow her as she slipped out of the church, entering the forest in the direction of the islandclan border. dianthusbounce had to lean heavily against his larger brother tangfin as they walked, with fritillarywhisker following shortly behind sunspots and damseldance brought up the rear. the trip between camps was silent, aside from the occasional sobs and sniffles from the purple-eyed tom, even during the swimming portion that they had to make to get to the islandclan camp in the middle of the lake.

the next moon passed by in both the slowest and fastest ways possible together, as the days seemed to both drag by endlessly and speed past mercilessly. dianthusbounce spent the majority of his days at the side of sunspots, his passed mate's mother; the pair of them seemed to find comfort in the presence of one another, discussing stories of times spent with silverwind over the moons. dianthusbounce shared of the romantic walks they would take, how they would lay together under the stars and talk about their future together. sunspots shared of silly things he would do as a kit, the way he would daydream during his training sometimes as an apprentice, but how above all else his loyalty and love for his family never faltered. fritillarywhisker spent every moment of each day and night by the side of her mate; the medicine cat den was a bit crowded with her added fourth frame, but spiderwhisker and poppyflower didnt say a word of complaint, knowing that her presence was the thing that salamandersight needed most during this time. the tortoiseshell would walk with him as he went into the woods searching for herbs, speaking only in hushed whispers that any passersby would be unable to hear, and they would curl their bodies together under the moon so that their two bodies were practically just one. tangfin spent every waking hour of the day searching for his missing mate; from the second that the sun's first morning rays would hint over the edge of the skyline until the very last moment as the sun swapped places with the moon and the warm light turned into cool white. damseldance spent her time at marbleswirl's side, lending her body as an aid for her mate to help her walk, ensuring that her mate visited the medicine cat every day to get her wound taken care of, things of that nature. by the end of the moon, things were still very different than they had been in the past, but life was beginning to return to a new form of normalcy.

Brambletail paced nervously outside the nursery. His heart raced as he heard Palemist's painful yowls muffled by what he assumed was a stick. Suddenly, he was aware of Beetlenose standing in front of him.
"Mousedung!" he said with a jump, "What do you want, Beetlenose?!" he snapped at the older tom.
"Easy Brambletail, I just need to see Maplecloud. Is she in there?" Beetlenose said calmly.
"I'm sorry..." Brambletail lowered his head, "I'm just worried. It's taking longer than I expected. Yeah, Maplecloud is in there with Palemist. I don't think you should go in though." he meowed.
"Hm... I need to get this to her" Beetlenose pawed at a tiny pile of fur on the ground, "It's cold and won't move" Brambletail looked down curiously at the small bundle.
"I'll take it." He said without hesitation, "I can keep it warm until Maplecloud is done."
"Alright then, good luck" Beetlenose huffed as he turned and walked off, leaving the kitten.

Brambletail pressed his nose into the tiny kit's pelt. It was cold on the outside, but he could still feel the warmth of life just a little deeper. He curled his body around it, trying to transfer as much warmth as possible. Another of Palemist's yowls pierced the air and Brambletail curled tighter around the kit.
"It'll be okay..." he whispered, "We can get through this together." They laid together, curled up, for what seemed like forever before the kit finally moved a little and let out the tiniest of mews.
"Well hello," Brambletail mewed in response, "welcome to Flightclan." Just a moment later, Maplecloud poked her head out of the nursery.
"Brambletail," she called out, "they're ready."
Brambletail's heart skipped a beat as he slowly uncurled himself and revealed the kit to Maplecloud.
"Oh..." she sighed, "here, I'll take that." Maplecloud moved to take the kit.
"No," Brambletail stopped her, "let me introduce her to Palemist. I think she was sent from Starclan to be with us." Maplecloud gave him a confused look but stepped out of the way. Brambletail gently picked up the now warm, squirming kit and walked into the nursery. He stopped just inside the entrance as he spotted the body curled up next Palemist. A huge grin spread across his face as he walked up to them. He laid his kit down a couple of tail-lengths away and gently nudged Palemist awake.

"Hello my love," Brambletail whispered to her, "you are so amazing." Palemist looked up at him a gave a weak smile.
"Her name is Sagekit." Palemist mewed softly.
"She's beautiful." Brambletail hesitated before showing his kit to Palemist, afraid the queen would reject her. "I want to introduce to you someone..." he picked up the kit and placed her in front of Palemist, "Beetlenose found this kit on patrol today, she doesn't have a mother."
"That's not true," Palemist interrupted him, "she's mine."
"Are you sure?" Brambletail was a bit shocked at how well she took to the kit.
"Yes." Palemist said without hesitation, "She was meant to be mine." Brambletail's heart swelled as he placed the small kit with Sagekit.
"Her name is Honeykit," he mewed as he laid down next to the three.
"I love them," Palemist whispered as she started to fall back asleep.
"Me too," Brambletail said as he curled his tail around his family and closed his eyes to rest.
