Life became more dynamic for the villagers of Hawk Ridge. More dynamic, and more diverse; both of which were welcoming gladly. It was almost overwhelming for Elora, to see where her village was going after such humble beginnings. She had turned into a calm, respectable leader - a turn around from her usually silent leading method, letting problems work themselves out. She was much more engaged, and more willing to laugh, now that she realized she had people by her side that wanted to see this village succeed just as much as she did. This forest was truly beginning to feel like something she never had; a home.

She didn't necessarily want to give all the credit to Seraphim, especially since his ego was big enough as it was, but there certainly was something to say about the harpy that came into her life. And stole her heart. There wasn't a moment that didn't make her heart skip a beat, or make her palms sweaty as she thought that he might leave her. It was nearly unbearable, thinking that another living being could love her this much and not leave after they realized she had nothing to give them. He was baffling for sure, but she couldn't help but feel glad he had found her. Perhaps they found each other in a weird twist of fate. Either way, there was definitely no complaints on either end, despite how much Seraphim might want to say otherwise.

This particular evening was passing uneventfully. Patrols had come back with only success to report, the food stock ever growing. No one had gotten sick, leaving Astor to study all day and night, which suited him perfectly fine. Elora found herself in her favorite spot; the tree branch that overlooked the commons area of the village, where she could see the hustle and bustle as people went about their business and shared stories of the day. A rare smile played on the edges of her expression, kicking out her feet happily.

"You look like a giddy kid who was told they could go and play early." Seraphim's familiar teasing, and fluttering of wings, sounded in her ear. He must have just returned from his hunt. In reply, Elora smiled wider and nodded, making Seraphim throw a dramatic hand across his chest. "Oh! Her smile stops my heart!"

Elora laughed, lightly hitting him across his arm. "Stop," she said rolling her eyes as he winked at her.

"Can't stop the truth, my dear Elora," he said happily, plopping down on the tree branch beside her. "You really do have a great view." He said, watching the villagers as she turned her attention back to them. "You should be proud of all that you've accomplished."

"Well, I couldn't have done it without you," she mumbled back, cheeks growing hot. It had been so many years of their relationship, and yet she still couldn't help but feel nervous around him. Embarrassed to let out her true feelings.

Seraphim swung an arm around her, smiling impishly as he kicked out his feet just as Elora had been doing moments ago. "You need to give yourself more credit," he said, hugging her for a second. "I wouldn't have stayed here if it wasn't for you, and I'm sure a lot of these people could say the same thing."

Elora looked out, watching as the new villager, Yuki, waved up to her. Elora waved back, smiling at the new villager.

"Thank you." She said, her heart swelling with happiness.

Spring
Spring is here! During the spring, birthings will be smooth and the chances of mothers or children dying during birth will drop dramatically. There is also a higher chance of catching more prey or finding new people and skilled animals looking for shelter, and the odds of sickness will drop.

The first melt has begun, and plants will be pushing their way out into the sunlight. There is a new warmth in the air and villagers will be relieved to know that prey will soon return to their territories. However, beware of flooding rivers and plains, as the rains can be heavy.

THEN
Seanni wiped her face with a napkin, holding her helmet awkwardly. She looked around at the small patrol; F'dust and Soyah were chatting quietly and Ze'ku sat under the protective wing of Hosurth. She looked up at Rosanth and smiled. Though the spring day was hot, the dragons seemed to be enjoying the weather. Most Southern-born dragons claimed that even the mild winters were terrible and some scholars believed that Northern-born and Southern-born dragons might one day become different species if they were kept separated. The occasional transfer of dragons to promote new blood in Weyrs and Weyrholds seemed to prevent this, however. But perhaps in a few thousand years... Not that she'd live that long, of course.

"Are you enjoying this?" she asked with a smile, placing her free hand on Rosanth's leg. "All of...this?" She gestured to the forest, the sky, the other riders and their dragons.

I enjoy it so long as I'm with you, replied Rosanth with a pointed rumble.

Seanni chuckled and leaned against her dragon, content. She wondered if it would be worth a visit to Dovefeather which was nearby from their current position, perhaps speak with Lady Holder Myracle. She insisted on being called Chieftan Myracle, however, something that puzzled Seanni. Well, they all had their quirks.

Kimorth bugled and Seanni looked over at F'dust, alarmed, noting the shade of red that Kimorth's whirling eyes had turned. He motioned for her to get back on her dragon and she stifled a flash of annoyance at a brownrider whose dragon had come from her Rosanth's clutch no less, commanding her. But judging from his panicked face, he had good reason.

Kimorth says there are wolves! exclaimed Rosanth, letting out a clarion cry.

"We're not letting this one pass," said Seanni through gritted teeth. "Tell the others that we're driving out this pack because it's too close to Dovefeather for my liking." A hand signal went up from F'dust, Soyah, Ze'ku, letting her know that they had received Rosanth's message from their own dragons and would be prepared to do whatever was necessary.

Hosurth's rider suggests that he get some firestone from the Weyrhold stores.

"No," replied Seanni, shaking her head as Rosanth jumped into the sky, flinching as the sound of barking, whining, and howling grew closer. "Tell him that I don't want to risk setting a forest fire." No more objections came, which was good. "We'll harass them until they leave. We'll follow them until we've gone far enough. Tell Soyah that she needs to do the calculations."

As soon as the wolves appeared, Seanni signaled for the other dragonriders to form a triangle with her at the back. This way, they could ensure that the wolves would go where the dragonriders wanted them to go. She shuddered, thankful that F'dust had warned them in time. A pack of wolves or cheetahs could be dangerous to dragons if they weren't careful enough. Everyone knew about Golanth of the Ninth Pass who had been severely injured by cheetahs. But that's also what taught our dragons telekinesis, Seanni thought distractedly. Unfortunately, if one wanted to be careful with an animal or item over a long distance, telekinesis was almost useless as few dragons knew more than the basics. Something to remedy. I'll talk it over with N'reg. But few greens and blues had the concentration to learn, and there weren't nearly enough bronzes and golds. A good thing, perhaps, because otherwise Pern would be up to its ears with dragons.

Herding the wolves proved to be a difficult task as they kept trying to disperse whenever they caught sight of the dragons overhead, and it took most of the day before they had run them far enough east that neither the Weyrhold nor Dovefeather would need to worry about this particular pack. Once she was satisfied, Seanni motioned for the patrol to transfer between and go home.

Tears streamed down Nitia's face as she held her son. Shollun and Fira had cleaned and covered him first, before giving the child to her. She turned to Wax who was stroking her hair and humming a tune. ...and voice, Nitia filled in mentally, And hope you'll never leave. The little ditty started again and she smiled. Such a perfect way to welcome their son to the world.

"What do you think we should name him?" asked Nitia.

Wax broke off humming and sighed. "Mmm...perhaps the traditional way. Combine our names."

Nitia frowned, thinking. She liked the idea; it was almost demanded that the first child was named traditionally, and she could think of a few names that sounded nice. "Tihan...Timan...Tianna..."

"Tianna sounds like a girl's name," scoffed Wax, rubbing his chin in thought. "But I like the sound of it. Perhaps...Tiannan? No, Tiennen?" He nodded, satisfied. "What do you think?"

Nitia leaned back on the bed. "Hello, Tiennen," she said softly. The baby rapidly lifted his arms before slowly lowering them and snuggling closer to his mother. "Tiennen. A good name." She smiled and kissed her son.

Predath landed in front of the caravan, spooking the runners that brought up the front. One screamed and reared, leading to the owner yelling at it to calm down. Children started jumping out of the caravan, crowding around the bronze dragon. Thankfully, N'reg had been able to get off without too much trouble.

"I'm on Search," he said to the caravan leader who had pulled up on his runner. "Would you be alright if...?"

The other man grinned. "If one of ours Impresses, it'll be a day to sing about for turns! Thalna!" he called. "Get the thirteen to twenty five-year-olds ready for Search!"

Do you think that anyone will be found suitable? N'reg asked Predath, looking up at his bronze.

Predath rumbled in thought, scaring some children and making others laugh. Perhaps, he replied. It's hard to tell.

N'reg nodded. His bronze wouldn't be the perfect Search dragon--blues were typically more sensitive to those who had the mental requirements--but would hopefully be able to pick out one or two good prospects. As he thought, a small group of people streamed from the caravan. It was mid-sized, he noted, which meant that not much more than thirty or forty people traveled and lived with it. He saw maybe ten people being herded over to him, although one girl let out a shriek when she saw Predath and ran away. Definitely not dragonrider material.

It wasn't long before he got all of the Search candidates lined up. One girl caught his eye; she had dark skin and klah-brown hair. She looked nervous as Predath sniffed her and N'reg caught an approving feeling from the bronze. Once the dragon was done, he looked at his rider. That one, he said, sending a picture of the girl with the klah hair. I like her.

N'reg walked up to her and looked at her appraisingly. "What's your name?" he asked.

"Ro-Rorria," she mumbled, not quite meeting his eyes. "...bronzerider?"

"Weyrleader, actually," he said, amused. "How would you like to stand for Impression? We expect one of our queens, or possibly our green, to rise in the next few turns." Shards know we need them to. "So we need candidates. Are you willing?"

Rorria's eyes widened and she gasped in delight. "Yes!"

N'reg smiled. "Then go tell your parents and grab some clothes." He walked up to the caravan leader--Husgot--and said quietly, "Thank you. We'll send a 'lizard when the eggs are ready to hatch."

"You said you didn't have any eggs on the Hatching Grounds?" asked Husgot.

N'reg nodded in confirmation. "We don't," he said, "but Borinth--our green--is overdue for a flight. And we expect either our senior queen or junior queen to rise in the next few turns. Unfortunately, we don't have very many young'uns at the Weyrhold so we're outsourcing for Candidates. We'll probably do Search from nearby Holds closer to the actual hatching of eggs. If we haven't had a Hatching in...three turns, we'll be happy to give Rorria back to you if she wants to come back. And if we have too many eggs and not enough Candidates, we'll probably try to find you, if you're willing."

Husgot chuckled, somewhat bitterly. "Once you go to live at a Weyrhold," he said, "it's hard to leave. Got a couple of cousins who're dragonriders or Weyrhold Crafters and it's usually their final destination. If Rorria likes it there, I suppose it'll be her new home."

N'reg's eyebrows rose and he dipped his head in agreement. "It is hard to leave home," he said quietly, shooting a smile at Predath.

I love you too, Predath said, amused, you overgrown fire-lizard.

N'reg barked out a laugh and Husgot looked at Predath with a questioning look before smiling and shaking his head. "Dragons?" he asked.

"Dragons," N'reg agreed.

The tears I feel today
I'll wait to shed tomorrow,

Eshni wept as she helped Borrin dig the grave. Spirit had finally passed, some months after Brawn. The two canines had been loyal to the last, always eager, always playful. And now...they were gone. Their pups were left behind, of course, but it was never truly a replacement. She could only imagine what Borrin had felt when he'd had to put down Chase when the canine had grown sick beyond healing.

Though I'll not sleep this night
Nor find surcease from sorrow.

"I think that's deep enough," Borrin said roughly. He looked at Abesses whose eyes also shone with tears and nodded. "Let's lay her to rest."

My eyes must keep their sight;
I dare not be tear-blinded.

Spirit's body was slightly damp. It was small. The brown fur, once as warm as klah, lay limp. The eyes were closed. At least she had died peacefully. Eshni put out a hesitant hand and recoiled as she touched the cold body. Her mother patted her shoulder and Eshni looked at her.

I must be free to speak;
Not choked with grief, clear-minded.

"Come here," said Jesni softly, as Eshni leaned into the hug. "It's okay. It's going to be okay." Though almost twenty turns and a journeyman Harper, the girl wept softly in her mother's arms. "They wait beyond between."

My tongue cannot betray

"I know," sobbed Eshni, hiccuping as she spoke. "It's just..."

The anguish that I know.

"It never gets any easier," said Ershar quietly, a calming hand over his brown fire-lizard, Zor. "Just be grateful for the time you got to spend with her. That's what..." He trailed off for a moment before resuming, eyes shining with unshed tears. "That's what I did." His voice grew rough and Eshni wondered if he was remembering Chase, the first canine of the Weyrhold.

I'll keep my tears 'till later

Eshni looked at Borrin and Abesses, who were smoothing the dirt that had been piled back onto the grave. The graveyard for the pets of the Weyrhold was small, but each gravestone seemed like one too many. It was too much for Eshni and she turned back to Jesni and the two of them simply stood for a while, hugging. At the end of the small funeral, the Weyrfolk left, with a fourth grave added to remember the loyal animals of the Weyrhold.

But my grief will never go.

"It's amazing to think it's been what...nine turns?"

"Eleven turns, actually," corrected F'dust. "Eleven turns since Impression."

"We've known each other for eleven turns," said Soyah wistfully. "It seems like such a short time, but also forever."

We have been with each other for forever! exclaimed Borinth, projecting to both her rider and F'dust. The humans laughed. Soyah looked at F'dust and started laughing harder. It took them a several minutes to get their emotions under control, as each time they looked at each other, or heard their dragons' amused rumbles, they kept laughing harder. Finally, the laughter died.

"It's a beautiful day, isn't it?" asked F'dust, gesturing to the blue sky, clear river, green grass. "Perfect day for a picnic."

"I love these little outings, you know," said Soyah, picking up a meatroll and inspecting it. She bit into it, closing her eyes in happiness. "Who'd you ask to make this?"

"Miklo," said F'dust, blushing slightly. "She makes amazing meatrolls. I asked her to help me make the lunch. She worked at a farm before coming here, apparently. Not sure for how long, though."

"You're so thoughtful," said Soyah, delighted, dipping her head and giving a not-quite grin.

When will you kiss her? asked Kimorth innocently. Isn't she supposed to kiss you now?

F'dust, who had been about to swallow, choked on a new bought of laughter. Soyah thumped on his back and gave him a questioning look. "Kimorth," he said finally, "knows too much for his own good."

Soyah shook her head, giving a mirthful smile. "They always come up with surprises for you. From Impressing you to chiming in at the most inappropriate times."

"Yeah," agreed F'dust, drawing out the word. "The other day, Kimorth asked if something was wrong with me because I was asleep during the day. I don't think they understand that humans also like to take naps when it's sunny out!"

Soyah chuckled. "Borinth keeps asking me when am I going to 'have a clutch of humans.' She really doesn't understand...you know."

"The human life cycle?" asked F'dust lightly. "The fact that humans don't have 'clutches' of children?"

Soyah nodded with a roll of her eyes. "Dragons."

"Dragons," he agreed.

VERTWYN
the village of vertwyn is a very hearty one, with mostly the same ranks as other villages. the town is known for being very tourist-centric, and oftentimes welcomes in weary travelers for a drink and encourages them to share their tales. they’re always up for a round of drinks and songs. vertwyn is an eccentric village with a love for storytelling and adventure, and their extremely diverse population certainly reflects that. the people of vertwyn tend to be of all personality types; there are some who adore socializing, and others who prefer to keep to themselves. regardless, all are welcome in vertwyn.

all species are able to join vertwyn, including some exotic races such as tieflings, firbolgs, gnomes, orcs, and the likes.

those who live in shadow country are forced to be there. cast out from society as “freaks” and “demons”, every one in shadow country has a special secret. shapeshifters, elementals, vampires, all sort of supernatural creatures call this place home. the official list of those who can reside in shadow country is: shifters/weres, elementals, powered humans, vampires, and demons. normal humans are looked down upon and despised. if the residents see any traces of humans, they track it and kill it. this establishment was founded by a powerful demon who wanted to live freely alone. soon, he realized there were others like him, and he created shadow country. they reside in a large, old medieval castle surrounded by forests and mountains for the residents to roam. appearances can be anything, but due to the location of the area being in Northern Europe, lighter features are more common.

VERTWYN
the village of vertwyn is a very hearty one, with mostly the same ranks as other villages. the town is known for being very tourist-centric, and oftentimes welcomes in weary travelers for a drink and encourages them to share their tales. they’re always up for a round of drinks and songs. vertwyn is an eccentric village with a love for storytelling and adventure, and their extremely diverse population certainly reflects that. the people of vertwyn tend to be of all personality types; there are some who adore socializing, and others who prefer to keep to themselves. regardless, all are welcome in vertwyn.

all species are able to join vertwyn, including some exotic races such as tieflings, firbolgs, gnomes, orcs, and the likes.

those who live in shadow country are forced to be there. cast out from society as “freaks” and “demons”, every one in shadow country has a special secret. shapeshifters, elementals, vampires, all sort of supernatural creatures call this place home. the official list of those who can reside in shadow country is: shifters/weres, elementals, powered humans, vampires, and demons. normal humans are looked down upon and despised. if the residents see any traces of humans, they track it and kill it. this establishment was founded by a powerful demon who wanted to live freely alone. soon, he realized there were others like him, and he created shadow country. they reside in a large, old medieval castle surrounded by forests and mountains for the residents to roam. appearances can be anything, but due to the location of the area being in Northern Europe, lighter features are more common.
