Ashnose's legs quivered as she and her patrol made their way back to camp, with only one little minnow to show for all their hard work in the snow.
A small sob tore its way out of the usually cheerful molly's throat, and she turned to face the other cats on her patrol, who looked just as, if not more terrified at the prospect of losing their prey again.
"It'll be okay," Pearfoot muttered, the pale tom serious and calm as per usual. "We'll just send out two hunting patrols, right? That'll work."
Ashnose nodded, although she wasn't quite sure if she believed him. Believing that the prey had returned after the patrols' previous catches, she'd only sent out one patrol.
"What if leafbare doesn't end?" She blurted. "What if it just keeps going on... forever and ever, and we all go hungry for the rest of our lives?"
"That's not gonna happen!" Swiftheart shouted, padding up to Ashnose. "Leafbare's pretty long right now, but it'll be newleaf before we know it, and the prey will be everywhere! Won't that be great? We're gonna be fine."
Swiftheart's confidence inn= what he was saying lifted some of the weight of Ashnose's shoulders, but she still wasn't sure if he was right.
With a sigh, she glanced up to the sky.
StarClan, please let newleaf come soon...

Copperpaw shook with fear.
She'd bounced ahead of everybody else on the border patrol, eager to prove herself, and now she was face to face with a massive ginger cat.
"Who are you?" The cat asked. Their voice was mellow, but there was a tinge of sharpness there, too, as if they were trying not to scare Copperpaw, not out of compassion for the little molly, but because they wanted an answer.
"I-I'm Copperpaw."
The massive ginger cat smiled broadly, flashing their teeth at Copperpaw.
[b]"Oh, a clan cat? My apologies for frightening you, I thought that perhaps you were a rogue. Rogues are usually dangerous to loners like me. Where's your leader? I'd like to join you! RainClan, I'm assuming?"
"Oh, uh, m-my leader? She's still at the camp. But uh, what's your name?""
"I'm Fire. I know enough about clans to know that many of them have second parts to their names. I'm fast, do you have one for that?"
"Y-yes. That'd be foot, but you'd have to talk to Sagestar."
The ginger cat nodded, then spotted the rest of Copperpaw's patrol, racing to catch up with her.
Copperpaw trembled as she watched the massive ginger ca race over to the others.
Never again would she go ahead of them.

Sometime later, Donnockpelt made the decision to teach Copperpaw how to fight, in case she ran into a large cat like Firefoot again, and they were trying to hurt her.
"If there's a really big cat, and they have you pinned, rake your claws across their belly, okay? It'll make them get off you, and if you do it well enough, they might run away! Do you want to try it?"
Copperpaw nodded, and she sheathed her claws.
Dunnockpelt stood over top of her, and she raked her paws across his belly.
He stepped away.
"Well done! I'll teach you a few other moves to use on bigger cats, now. Jumping onto their back can work, but be careful if they look heavy. Sometimes, f you jump onto the back of another cat, they'll flop onto their back to hurt you. Make sure to gauge what your oppenent will do. Watch them, learn their patterns. Know what your enemy is going to do, and they'll never be able to surprise you. Want to try it?"
Copperpaw nodded, and they resumed their training.

Later that day, Sagestar padded into the camp and called a quick meeting near the fresh-kill pile.
"So, you may all eat. Since we're getting low on prey again, I'll be sending out two hunting patrols. The first one will consist of Firefoot, Ashnose, Applecloud, and Copperpaw. The second will consist of Smokeface, Mallowcloud, Pearfoot, and Dusttail. There will also be a border patrol with Linnetwhisker, Dunnockpelt, Swiftheart, and Wasppelt. Briarleaf, go herb hunting? And Dunnockpelt, train Copperpaw? Alright, that concludes today's meeting!"

Then
Applenose trembled as he drank the waters of the Moonpool for the first time. He was aware of Dustleaf and Larknose beside him, watching patiently. Boulderpelt, his new deputy, was back in camp. Safe and sound. Just in case.
The clan had been in turmoil since Honeystar had died almost five nights before, less than a moon after giving birth to her three healthy kits. Applenose had stepped up and had said that he would be traveling to the Moonpool just as soon as he chose his deputy and was assured that the kits could be cared for. Isidora had promised to care for them like her own, and Aspentail, the father, had been extremely protective over them. Boulderpelt was then chosen as his deputy--she had a great deal of experience and had been in the clan since the beginning--which meant that Applenose had no excuses left to avoid the Moonpool. And take his place as leader.
The cream tom lay down and curled in his spot, wondering what the night would bring. He flicked his ears as he heard the two medicine cats settle beside him and finally, he drifted into an uneasy slumber.

Applenose awoke slowly, ears twitching as they picked up murmuring and shuffling. He heard a familiar voice and murmured, "Acornstream?" He opened his eyes with a start to see many bodies around him. They all glowed faintly and most looked...familiar. His eyes focused and he realized where he was. He was in Starclan.
"Applenose," said Acornstream, stepping forward. He looked young, just like he had when Applenose was just an apprentice. "Are you ready to assume your responsibilities as leader of Forestclan?"
"Y-yes," he said, stammering. He stood up and puffed out his chest. "I am ready."
Honeystar stepped forward and Applenose realized with a slight shock that she too, looked younger and healthier. "I chose you for a reason," she said in a clear voice, free of the rasp. "You have been dedicated to the clan since you joined, and I believed that you'd be capable of leading the new generations." Her eyes softened and her voice became slightly more shaky. "Keep the clan together. I would like for my kits to grow up in a good world."
"I will," Applenose replied hearing himself as though from a distance.
"Then let us begin."
Now Minkstar stepped forward, looking just as he had all those seasons ago when he had reassured then-Applepaw about his upcoming assessments. He gently touched Applenose's nose with his own. "With this life," he said in his world-weary voice, "I give you the wisdom to learn from another's failures."

"We can't continue like this," said Swiftfur bitterly as she huddled next to Ashpaw. "I should never have agreed to such a foolish venture."
The winter had been far more brutal than Minkstar had realized it would be, and he wished dearly that he could sleep in a den. However, there was no den anymore after it had been snowed in and the five clanmates couldn't dig it back out.
"Then leave," said Minkstar quietly, looking to the sky. Why have you given me the burden of nine lives? he screamed internally. Why must I watch my clan dwindle to nothing? "Goosetail already did." Goosetail, his deputy had vanished some nights ago. She hadn't been heard from or seen, and it was generally assumed by the four cats left that she had either left or died in the snows.
"Maybe we will," replied Swiftfur darkly. "C'mon, Ashpaw. Time to get away from this farce." The black-and-white molly stood, nudging her dark-furred tabby apprentice to her paws. Then, they left the small clearing.
Minkstar watched them go and turned to Dustwhisker, the only other cat remaining. "Why are you still here?" he asked bitterly. "Just leave like the others already did."
Dustwhisker sighed. "This clan could have been something great," she said quietly. "But if you don't want me here... I won't bother." Then she too, was gone. And Minkstar was left alone with his thoughts.

"If I had encouraged my clan," Minkstar said quietly, drawing Applenose's attention back, "maybe I could have kept us together. If I had convinced more cats to join, we could have weathered the winter. Learn from this--and do better."
Applenose nodded, eyes wide. He vaguely recalled Minkstar telling him about the clanmates that had disappeared, but to see them as they were when alive... It hurt more than he had expected. Wherever their spirits were, he hoped that they were at peace.
Acornstream drew attention back to him with a soft meow. Applenose turned towards him and his former mentor stepped forward to touch noses. "Applenose," said the longhaired golden-brown tom softly, "I give you the ability to appreciate and have faith in those younger than you."

"Daddy!" cried Boulderkit enthusiastically, leaping onto her father, small claws unsheathed to better grip. Acornstream winced and Duckpelt chuckled softly. "Daddy daddy daddy!"
"What were you doing?" asked Adderkit curiously, nudging his father's paw away. He curled up next to Acornstream and looked up expectantly.
Acornstream felt a surge of love for his kits. They were everything that he could ever have wanted. He heard the soft shuffling of paws against the nursery floor and turned to see Applepaw, his apprentice, standing nervously outside.
"Hi, Applepaw!" called Barleykit cheerfully. "C'min! I won't bite. But maybe Boulderkit will!" She dropped her voice into a mock whisper. "Better not anger her because she bites hard."
"Uhh," said Applepaw nervously, looking from Acornstream to Duckpelt. "I don't know..."
"Come in," said Duckpelt warmly. "I'll keep Boulderkit from biting you."
Applepaw snorted, amused, and stepped into the warm nursery. Acornstream felt peaceful; his apprentice was learning quickly and his kits were growing just as fast. He felt some melancholy as he realized that they would soon be apprenticed to one of his fellow warriors such as Briarwhisker or Dawnstorm. But he trusted them to teach and do it well.

The memory faded and Applenose felt a sense of sorrow. He had forgotten about that day but vaguely recalled his clanmates as kits. Now, those memories were as fresh as the day they had been made. He started as he realized he had made Boulderpelt his deputy. Such a change from the rambunctious kit in Acornstream's memories! He met his former mentor's eyes and Acornstream smiled, a gesture that seemed sad.
"She's deputy, you know," Applenose said softly. "And Dustleaf's...grown. She's a good friend."
"My little kits, all grown up," replied Acornstream. "I never had a doubt that all of them would achieve something great."
A small cough dragged Applenose's attention to the third cat. His eyes widened and he made a small noise at the back of his throat. It was Grayfur, looking young and healthy instead of the small and broken body he had last seen her as. After that badger had taken her life. She was looking at him and it took a moment for Applenose to realize that the former elder's blue eyes could see. She was looking at him.
"Look at you now," Grayfur purred, glancing at Bramblebush who was standing beside her. "Glad to know you've made something of yourself."
"H-hey!" Applenose complained, finally finding his voice. He was about to say something else before he recognized the chuckle coming from Grayfur and he gave up, closing his eyes and briefly lifting a paw in the air.
"I've come to give you a life," said Grayfur, more serious now. "The life of confidence and courage." She and Applenose moved forward at the same time and the moment their noses touched, a new scene unfolded in his mind.

The world was black but it was full of scents and sounds that helped Grayfur to navigate the world. And what they told right now was a story of panic.
"Badgers!" Birchnose yowled in a call to action. "Badgers in the camp!"
Grayfur huddled next to Bramblebush, worried for her clanmates. She heard Mila cry in pain and Palefur shouted something unintelligible. Finally, the waiting got to be too much for her. She had to do something to help the clan that had given her a home. Sheltered her. Kept her alive. Well, she'd prove that she had a little more to give in return.
"I can't stand this waiting," she said, getting to her paws. She could hear scrambling and grunting just outside the den. "I need to do something."
"No--wait!" called Bramblebush as she pushed past him, ignoring his shifting body as he moved to block her.
Grayfur emerged from the den and, feeling the sunlight on her fur, closed her eyes. The world was loud, full of sounds and scents to numerous to distinguish easily. But that was alright. She oriented herself towards the nearest source of badger smell. There. She bounded towards it, sure of foot though old of age. She reeled back just as she felt some wind coming from the front and hissed as claws struck her muzzle. She jumped forward, clawing and biting with all her strength. Though she fought valiantly, one misstep and it was over. The badger finally brought a large paw down on her back as she tried to slip under it and she screamed as bones broke. Her cries went unanswered in the heat of battle however, and she asphyxiated in the shadow of the fight. Her final thoughts weren't those of regret but rather of pride. If her death could serve to help her clan, if those she loved remembered her, then her life wouldn't have been in vain.

"A leader must not hesitate to leap into danger," Grayfur said quietly, "if it means protecting her clanmates. How many times did Honeystar take risks that could have easily lost her a life? Are you ready to perform those same tasks?"
Applenose blinked a few times to get a grip on his emotions. He remembered seeing Grayfur's broken body on the ground, mouth open in a silent scream or, as he now knew, gasp for breath. But knowing that she had taken the risk, knowing what was likely to happen...
"I have to be ready," he said once he had gathered his thoughts. "I can't be prepared for everything but I need to be willing to do what's necessary, what's right."
Grayfur nodded, eyes shining with pride, and stepped back. Now, a small tortoiseshell stepped up. It was Fritillarynose. She looked nervous, tail twitching and breathing audibly. She froze for a few moments before finally speaking. "I-I've come to give you a life," she said quickly. "The life of understanding motivations and forgiveness of self." Before Applenose could react, their noses touched and he was once again thrust into a vision.

Fritillarynose had been attracted to Oakheart's charisma and determination to do what he felt was right for the clan. It made sense, after all. Honeystar should have known about the fire. She should have been more careful around the River. She could have prevented the death of Patchcloud by forcing Smokefur into the medicine cats' den earlier.
"We will need to convince..." Oakheart was saying. He kept pacing and Fritillarynose followed his movements from the corners of her eyes. She had her doubts, especially about how they could convince Honeystar and Birchnose to step down, but was sure that things would work out.
"When I'm leader, I will tell Starclan to send us a new medicine cat loyal to me."
Fritillarynose blinked, coming out of her thoughts to see Swancloud making motions of agreement. She frowned inwardly. Loyalty to Oakheart. Not to Starclan or the Warrior Code. To him. She looked at Gannetstorm and exchanged dark looks. Would they go their separate ways now? Perhaps. She could tell that Gannetstorm wasn't convinced. Fritillarynose, however, hoped to be able to temper Oakheart. Maybe this could be resolved peacefully. Yes, she would stay with Oakheart and see what he would do. Then she could make up her mind.

Applenose came out of the vision shaking with fury. Fritillarynose looked back at him with wide, nervous eyes and he forced himself to calm down. How could anyone forgive an accomplice to a killer? A traitor? But her attitude scared him. What would have happened if the traitor had targeted him? He could almost find himself agreeing with her views. Without knowing how hard Honeystar and Birchnose had tried to save the clan from the fire, without knowing how Smokefur insisted on performing her duties until the last minute... It was easy to see how several young warriors could be convinced to betray their clan.
Applenose looked into Fritillarynose's eyes, calmer now. "I forgive you," he said, surprised to find that he meant it. The small tortoiseshell dipped her head in acknowledgement and a moment later, it seemed as though she had vanished. Understand what drives others, Applenose thought to himself. Understand how they think, why they think the way they do. Stop conflicts before they start. Remember this.
While he was lost in thought, he didn't notice the two figures stepping up to him. When he looked up, he took a step back involuntarily. Briarwhisker and Snowfoot stood together, smiling slightly. The two mollies looked as though they were in their prime. Snowfoot looked excited as she swayed slightly while Briarwhisker stood still, almost tree-like in her calm.
"We've come to give you your fifth life," said Briarwhisker in her calm not-quite monotone.
"The ability to make friends and allies of those different than you," added Snowfoot.
As soon as Applenose touched the noses of both Briarwhisker and Snowfoot, he was flung into a vision different from the others.

Briarwhisker being convinced to join Forestclan. Meeting Dawnstorm and being disgusted with his loudness and over-eagerness with everything.
Snowfoot joining the clan out of curiosity and a desire for safety. Meeting Briarwhisker and initially being annoyed with her aloofness. Meeting Dawnstorm and being amused with his terrible jokes and enjoying his enthusiasm for life.
Snowfoot and Briarwhisker becoming unlikely friends but having their differences regarding Dawnstorm.
Daisywhisker, brother of Dawnstorm, joining the clan and Briarwhisker becoming intrigued.
Snowfoot finally admitting her love to Dawnstorm. "I will be with you forever."
Briarwhisker working up the courage to tell Dawnstorm that while they might have their differences, she loved his brother and wanted to tell him that she would try to put their differences aside. "I don't like you but I can work with you."

Briarwhisker with her kits at the funeral of her mate. Crying. Knowing that nothing will ever be the same again when so many lights had been snuffed out. Hoping to meet them in the life beyond. Looking back in wonder at how different they all had been, and how close they had grown to be. A life well lived. Briarwhisker had no regrets.

Applenose came out of the flurry of visions and feelings feeling a deep sense of sorrow, but also...hope? Yes, hope. And confidence. If two people, so different from each other, could become such close friends, then he would use their lessons to build community within his clan and alliances with others.
"It is now time for me to give you your next life," said Crowcloud, appearing from somewhere within the crowd.
Applenose turned to the first medicine cat he had ever known. One of the bravest cats, too. "I'm ready," he said softly, moving forward.
"Then let me give you your sixth life--the ability to let go."

Bramblebush coughed weakly and Dustleaf moved to give him some water-filled moss. He drank eagerly but when Crowcloud touched his nose to the elder's fur, felt a sickly heat radiating from it.
Next to Bramblebush lay Acornstream, who was mercifully asleep. He had been ranting and raving every time he woke up for the past few days, which boded ill for his survival.
"Is dad going to live?" asked Dustleaf, moving to where Crowcloud sat.
Crowcloud opened his mouth and closed it, unable to speak for a moment. Finally, he managed to get out: "I-I don't know. If Starclan wills it."
Dustleaf made no movement and Crowcloud nuzzled her, trying to comfort her to the best of his abilities. He had already resigned to the fact that his patients would likely die but seeing Dustleaf's reaction simply broke his heart. He wanted to assure her that nothing would ever happen to her parents but he couldn't. He couldn't be so cruel as to give her hope when there was none. May Starclan forgive me, he thought sadly, looking at the now-peaceful form of Bramblebush. And may Starclan grant peace to my apprentice.

"The next morning, Acornstream and Bramblebush died," said Crowcloud quietly, bringing Applenose from his thoughts. "I'm sure you remember the rest."
Applenose nodded, recalling Duckpelt's eulogy. He was a kind and brave tom, her voice seemed to say. The perfect father. "I do," he said quietly. "How could I forget?"
"Never forget, but don't dwell on the past," said Crowcloud. "Don't let your failures drag you down because there will always be a chance in the future to rectify your mistakes."
Applenose nodded and Crowcloud moved back into the crowd. Now two kits moved forward and his eyes widened. They could only be Bleakkit and Sorrelkit, who had died days after birth. Their parents, Birchnose and Alderclaw, were right behind them. Supervising. They look so big, Applenose thought in wonder. But then, he supposed, they could have grown up in Starclan.
"We've come to give you the life of overcoming challenges," said one of the kits confidently. The silver tabby. Bleakkit.
Applenose locked eyes with Sorrelkit, who mouthed that her brother was a pain. He chuckled and locked eyes with Alderclaw who simply made a motion with his tail. Birchnose, too, said nothing but smiled. With a sharp jerk of his head, Applenose crouched down to touch noses with the two kits.

Sorrelkit couldn't remember a single day of life. Her first memories were made in Starclan with the first face she saw being her dad, Alderclaw, smiling sadly at her and her brother. When she and her brother grew old enough to speak and understand what was spoken, they were taken to the Moonpool which allowed them to touch the dreams of the living. And in those dreams she watched.
She watched as then-Larkkit asked Dustleaf what being a medicine cat was like and felt jealous that he got the chance. But she stuffed it down and in the few dreams where they spoke, she spun tales of nonexistent medicine cats who saved their clans from plague, from injury, from heartbreak.
She watched as then-Silverpaw threw a tantrum when she was punished after she was caught eating her catch instead of delivering it to her clan. In her sister's dreams, she explained why it was so important not to eat whatever they caught. She was so proud of herself for remembering what Alderclaw had told her about honor and the Warrior Code.
She watched as Dustleaf chose then-Larkpaw as her apprentice and had asked Crowcloud if she could learn some healing knowledge herself. The black tom had agreed and together, the siblings trained--though one was alive and the other dead.
She watched as then-Silverpaw and then-Orchidpaw made the journey to the Moonpool where they talked for the first time, truly talked. Applenose came out of the visions, one from Sorrelkit and one from Bleakkit with a slightly open mouth. He had supposed that kittens would go to Starclan after their deaths but he hadn't realized just how much that he took for granted the two kits in front of him never experienced. "Sorrelfire. Bleakstone." The names sounded odd but... Non-traditional names for a pair of non-traditional warriors. Somehow, they fit. "It's been an honor to meet you," Applenose said quietly.
The two kits gave him smiles that alone seemed to light up the clearing around the Moonpool before dashing off, part clearly over. In their place stepped up Bramblebush, mane of silver fur elegant and clean. Applenose's breath caught in his throat at the easy grace, those powerful muscles, those burning golden eyes. Bramblebush had been quite a looker when he was younger, it seemed.
"I have come to give you your eighth life," the elder rumbled, voice powerful. His eyes softened with humor. "Perhaps you have heard this enough times in your life," he said, "but it is wise to listen to your elders."
Applenose dipped his head. "Indeed," he said in agreement. "I had to listen to quite a few lectures on that."
Bramblebush smiled. "Then let me lecture you one last time."

Bramblebush pushed himself to his paws to greet Smokepaw as she dropped a finch in front of him. "Thank you," he purred. Smokepaw huffed and looked as though she were about to say something but instead, backed out of the den. Bramblebush settled back down, bringing his shaking legs underneath him. A small glance to the side showed that Grayfur, the blind elder who was his denmate, was still asleep. With a twitch of his tail, he scooped the finch closer to himself and began to nibble at it.
He supposed that he shouldn't complain about the apprentices, as they generally didn't complain within earshot. But he did hope that they would understand in time, why it was so important to listen to their elders. Why it was so important to understand their clan's history, little as there was. Already, he was gathering stories to tell the apprentices.
He heard the chatter as a patrol came back in, bearing news of the borders. Looking up, he saw Cherryclaw, Ashstripe, and Aspentail talking excitedly. He smiled; those three looked to be such good friends and he could only be happy for them. They were a good example, he thought, of what friendship could and should be. He filed that away to tell another time. Perhaps he would tell Scorchkit a tale of three good friends who would follow each other to the ends of the world. He saw love flash in Cherryclaw's eyes as she met Ashstripe's eyes and Bramblebush smiled. Life was very good.

Applenose emerged from the peaceful vision and gave a bittersweet smile. "If only we'd had you for longer," he said hoarsely. "You and Grayfur."
Bramblebush snorted, amused. "We elders who aren't clanborn come to you only for a little while. So long as you remember us and pass on our stories, then we've done our job."
Applenose's heart pounded. Grayfur, Bramblebush, Dippercloud, and Goosetail. All elders who had joined the clan and died in the clan. "The kits are brought up on the stories you told."
Bramblebush smiled and dipped his head. Without another word, he faded back into the crowd. And finally, Honeystar stepped forward once again. Her healthy appearance was so startling, in comparison to the aging leader he remembered her as.
"It is time for you to receive your final life," she said, voice echoing slightly. Her eyes shone with something that Applenose couldn't identify. "With this life, I strip you of your life and identity as a warrior, and replace it with the life and identity of a leader. With this life, you shall be hailed no more as Applenose. You will be called Applestar, leader and protector of Forestclan."
Applenose shuddered as he breathed. "I am ready," he said quietly, "to receive this final life."
Honeystar smiled...triumphant? "Then let me give you your final life, the life of conviction and leadership. Be firm in your decisions and remember that you can't undo the past."
I know, Applenose thought with no small bit of regret. If only they could have known about the traitor earlier. If only they could have prevented the fire. If only they could have prevented the badgers. If only. If only. But there was no hesitation as he leaned forward to touch Honeystar's nose.

Honeystar sobbed as she lay next to Birchnose's mauled corpse. How could she have fallen to something as simple to rid as a fox? For it was a fox's scent that suffused the body.
"Honeystar," said a voice. "Honeystar, you have to get up. We have to bury her."
Honeystar looked up through rage-stained eyes to see Dustleaf standing there, next to Applenose and Barleystream. Applenose had been the speaker and his tail twitched angrily. Who could have left her alone? the whole wondered. Had this been a set-up?
"I know," Honeystar murmured. She took one last look at her friend's body. Silver, black, and red blended together. Copper eyes looking ahead in horror. What had she seen in those final moments? Who had she cried to for help? Had there been anyone? The leader stood, shaking herself. "In front of this clan," she said loudly and carefully, "I appoint Applenose as my deputy, as he has shown courage, steadfastness, care, and kindness. He has been with the clan for many seasons and has trained two apprentices. I trust that he will fill the role of deputy well, and will be a good leader after me."
There was silence. Silence from the warriors who surrounded them. Silence from the apprentices who huddled together, comforting Birchnose's kits. Silence from Mila and Isidora, who kept the three kits from looking at their friend's body. Silence from the elders who had buried too many corpses, too many friends.
"There is no going back," Honeystar continued, "so we must move forward and take what we have learned with us." She looked around. "Birchnose will be buried by her mate, Alderclaw. We will remember all that they have given us. And all that they could have done. We will mourn, but we will stand. For we are Forestclan and we will stand as long as the trees do." There was murmur of agreement and finally, the clan began to move again.

As Applestar came out of his vision, he heard cats chanting his new name. "Applestar! Applestar!" the cats of Starclan cried. He caught the eyes of those who had given him his nine lives. He saw those who had been hovering at the edges of his vision. And he saw four cats, unfamiliar to him, standing next to Minkstar. His breath caught as he recognized an older Ashpaw, a jovial Swiftfur, a calm Dustwhisker, and a steady molly he assumed was Goosetail. Minkstar's old clanmates had finally rejoined him. The scene faded until he finally emerged from his dream, a strange energy suffusing his body.
"Are you ready?" asked Dustleaf once he had gotten his bearings.
"Yes. Let's head home."
Applestar. Not Applenose. Applestar, leader and protector of Forestclan. He smiled, knowing that his friends and family would be, were proud of him. He surged forward, eager to get home as soon as possible.

Applenose trembled as he drank the waters of the Moonpool for the first time. He was aware of Dustleaf and Larknose beside him, watching patiently. Boulderpelt, his new deputy, was back in camp. Safe and sound. Just in case.
The clan had been in turmoil since Honeystar had died almost five nights before, less than a moon after giving birth to her three healthy kits. Applenose had stepped up and had said that he would be traveling to the Moonpool just as soon as he chose his deputy and was assured that the kits could be cared for. Isidora had promised to care for them like her own, and Aspentail, the father, had been extremely protective over them. Boulderpelt was then chosen as his deputy--she had a great deal of experience and had been in the clan since the beginning--which meant that Applenose had no excuses left to avoid the Moonpool. And take his place as leader.
The cream tom lay down and curled in his spot, wondering what the night would bring. He flicked his ears as he heard the two medicine cats settle beside him and finally, he drifted into an uneasy slumber.

Applenose awoke slowly, ears twitching as they picked up murmuring and shuffling. He heard a familiar voice and murmured, "Acornstream?" He opened his eyes with a start to see many bodies around him. They all glowed faintly and most looked...familiar. His eyes focused and he realized where he was. He was in Starclan.
"Applenose," said Acornstream, stepping forward. He looked young, just like he had when Applenose was just an apprentice. "Are you ready to assume your responsibilities as leader of Forestclan?"
"Y-yes," he said, stammering. He stood up and puffed out his chest. "I am ready."
Honeystar stepped forward and Applenose realized with a slight shock that she too, looked younger and healthier. "I chose you for a reason," she said in a clear voice, free of the rasp. "You have been dedicated to the clan since you joined, and I believed that you'd be capable of leading the new generations." Her eyes softened and her voice became slightly more shaky. "Keep the clan together. I would like for my kits to grow up in a good world."
"I will," Applenose replied hearing himself as though from a distance.
"Then let us begin."
Now Minkstar stepped forward, looking just as he had all those seasons ago when he had reassured then-Applepaw about his upcoming assessments. He gently touched Applenose's nose with his own. "With this life," he said in his world-weary voice, "I give you the wisdom to learn from another's failures."

"We can't continue like this," said Swiftfur bitterly as she huddled next to Ashpaw. "I should never have agreed to such a foolish venture."
The winter had been far more brutal than Minkstar had realized it would be, and he wished dearly that he could sleep in a den. However, there was no den anymore after it had been snowed in and the five clanmates couldn't dig it back out.
"Then leave," said Minkstar quietly, looking to the sky. Why have you given me the burden of nine lives? he screamed internally. Why must I watch my clan dwindle to nothing? "Goosetail already did." Goosetail, his deputy had vanished some nights ago. She hadn't been heard from or seen, and it was generally assumed by the four cats left that she had either left or died in the snows.
"Maybe we will," replied Swiftfur darkly. "C'mon, Ashpaw. Time to get away from this farce." The black-and-white molly stood, nudging her dark-furred tabby apprentice to her paws. Then, they left the small clearing.
Minkstar watched them go and turned to Dustwhisker, the only other cat remaining. "Why are you still here?" he asked bitterly. "Just leave like the others already did."
Dustwhisker sighed. "This clan could have been something great," she said quietly. "But if you don't want me here... I won't bother." Then she too, was gone. And Minkstar was left alone with his thoughts.

"If I had encouraged my clan," Minkstar said quietly, drawing Applenose's attention back, "maybe I could have kept us together. If I had convinced more cats to join, we could have weathered the winter. Learn from this--and do better."
Applenose nodded, eyes wide. He vaguely recalled Minkstar telling him about the clanmates that had disappeared, but to see them as they were when alive... It hurt more than he had expected. Wherever their spirits were, he hoped that they were at peace.
Acornstream drew attention back to him with a soft meow. Applenose turned towards him and his former mentor stepped forward to touch noses. "Applenose," said the longhaired golden-brown tom softly, "I give you the ability to appreciate and have faith in those younger than you."

"Daddy!" cried Boulderkit enthusiastically, leaping onto her father, small claws unsheathed to better grip. Acornstream winced and Duckpelt chuckled softly. "Daddy daddy daddy!"
"What were you doing?" asked Adderkit curiously, nudging his father's paw away. He curled up next to Acornstream and looked up expectantly.
Acornstream felt a surge of love for his kits. They were everything that he could ever have wanted. He heard the soft shuffling of paws against the nursery floor and turned to see Applepaw, his apprentice, standing nervously outside.
"Hi, Applepaw!" called Barleykit cheerfully. "C'min! I won't bite. But maybe Boulderkit will!" She dropped her voice into a mock whisper. "Better not anger her because she bites hard."
"Uhh," said Applepaw nervously, looking from Acornstream to Duckpelt. "I don't know..."
"Come in," said Duckpelt warmly. "I'll keep Boulderkit from biting you."
Applepaw snorted, amused, and stepped into the warm nursery. Acornstream felt peaceful; his apprentice was learning quickly and his kits were growing just as fast. He felt some melancholy as he realized that they would soon be apprenticed to one of his fellow warriors such as Briarwhisker or Dawnstorm. But he trusted them to teach and do it well.

The memory faded and Applenose felt a sense of sorrow. He had forgotten about that day but vaguely recalled his clanmates as kits. Now, those memories were as fresh as the day they had been made. He started as he realized he had made Boulderpelt his deputy. Such a change from the rambunctious kit in Acornstream's memories! He met his former mentor's eyes and Acornstream smiled, a gesture that seemed sad.
"She's deputy, you know," Applenose said softly. "And Dustleaf's...grown. She's a good friend."
"My little kits, all grown up," replied Acornstream. "I never had a doubt that all of them would achieve something great."
A small cough dragged Applenose's attention to the third cat. His eyes widened and he made a small noise at the back of his throat. It was Grayfur, looking young and healthy instead of the small and broken body he had last seen her as. After that badger had taken her life. She was looking at him and it took a moment for Applenose to realize that the former elder's blue eyes could see. She was looking at him.
"Look at you now," Grayfur purred, glancing at Bramblebush who was standing beside her. "Glad to know you've made something of yourself."
"H-hey!" Applenose complained, finally finding his voice. He was about to say something else before he recognized the chuckle coming from Grayfur and he gave up, closing his eyes and briefly lifting a paw in the air.
"I've come to give you a life," said Grayfur, more serious now. "The life of confidence and courage." She and Applenose moved forward at the same time and the moment their noses touched, a new scene unfolded in his mind.

The world was black but it was full of scents and sounds that helped Grayfur to navigate the world. And what they told right now was a story of panic.
"Badgers!" Birchnose yowled in a call to action. "Badgers in the camp!"
Grayfur huddled next to Bramblebush, worried for her clanmates. She heard Mila cry in pain and Palefur shouted something unintelligible. Finally, the waiting got to be too much for her. She had to do something to help the clan that had given her a home. Sheltered her. Kept her alive. Well, she'd prove that she had a little more to give in return.
"I can't stand this waiting," she said, getting to her paws. She could hear scrambling and grunting just outside the den. "I need to do something."
"No--wait!" called Bramblebush as she pushed past him, ignoring his shifting body as he moved to block her.
Grayfur emerged from the den and, feeling the sunlight on her fur, closed her eyes. The world was loud, full of sounds and scents to numerous to distinguish easily. But that was alright. She oriented herself towards the nearest source of badger smell. There. She bounded towards it, sure of foot though old of age. She reeled back just as she felt some wind coming from the front and hissed as claws struck her muzzle. She jumped forward, clawing and biting with all her strength. Though she fought valiantly, one misstep and it was over. The badger finally brought a large paw down on her back as she tried to slip under it and she screamed as bones broke. Her cries went unanswered in the heat of battle however, and she asphyxiated in the shadow of the fight. Her final thoughts weren't those of regret but rather of pride. If her death could serve to help her clan, if those she loved remembered her, then her life wouldn't have been in vain.

"A leader must not hesitate to leap into danger," Grayfur said quietly, "if it means protecting her clanmates. How many times did Honeystar take risks that could have easily lost her a life? Are you ready to perform those same tasks?"
Applenose blinked a few times to get a grip on his emotions. He remembered seeing Grayfur's broken body on the ground, mouth open in a silent scream or, as he now knew, gasp for breath. But knowing that she had taken the risk, knowing what was likely to happen...
"I have to be ready," he said once he had gathered his thoughts. "I can't be prepared for everything but I need to be willing to do what's necessary, what's right."
Grayfur nodded, eyes shining with pride, and stepped back. Now, a small tortoiseshell stepped up. It was Fritillarynose. She looked nervous, tail twitching and breathing audibly. She froze for a few moments before finally speaking. "I-I've come to give you a life," she said quickly. "The life of understanding motivations and forgiveness of self." Before Applenose could react, their noses touched and he was once again thrust into a vision.

Fritillarynose had been attracted to Oakheart's charisma and determination to do what he felt was right for the clan. It made sense, after all. Honeystar should have known about the fire. She should have been more careful around the River. She could have prevented the death of Patchcloud by forcing Smokefur into the medicine cats' den earlier.
"We will need to convince..." Oakheart was saying. He kept pacing and Fritillarynose followed his movements from the corners of her eyes. She had her doubts, especially about how they could convince Honeystar and Birchnose to step down, but was sure that things would work out.
"When I'm leader, I will tell Starclan to send us a new medicine cat loyal to me."
Fritillarynose blinked, coming out of her thoughts to see Swancloud making motions of agreement. She frowned inwardly. Loyalty to Oakheart. Not to Starclan or the Warrior Code. To him. She looked at Gannetstorm and exchanged dark looks. Would they go their separate ways now? Perhaps. She could tell that Gannetstorm wasn't convinced. Fritillarynose, however, hoped to be able to temper Oakheart. Maybe this could be resolved peacefully. Yes, she would stay with Oakheart and see what he would do. Then she could make up her mind.

Applenose came out of the vision shaking with fury. Fritillarynose looked back at him with wide, nervous eyes and he forced himself to calm down. How could anyone forgive an accomplice to a killer? A traitor? But her attitude scared him. What would have happened if the traitor had targeted him? He could almost find himself agreeing with her views. Without knowing how hard Honeystar and Birchnose had tried to save the clan from the fire, without knowing how Smokefur insisted on performing her duties until the last minute... It was easy to see how several young warriors could be convinced to betray their clan.
Applenose looked into Fritillarynose's eyes, calmer now. "I forgive you," he said, surprised to find that he meant it. The small tortoiseshell dipped her head in acknowledgement and a moment later, it seemed as though she had vanished. Understand what drives others, Applenose thought to himself. Understand how they think, why they think the way they do. Stop conflicts before they start. Remember this.
While he was lost in thought, he didn't notice the two figures stepping up to him. When he looked up, he took a step back involuntarily. Briarwhisker and Snowfoot stood together, smiling slightly. The two mollies looked as though they were in their prime. Snowfoot looked excited as she swayed slightly while Briarwhisker stood still, almost tree-like in her calm.
"We've come to give you your fifth life," said Briarwhisker in her calm not-quite monotone.
"The ability to make friends and allies of those different than you," added Snowfoot.
As soon as Applenose touched the noses of both Briarwhisker and Snowfoot, he was flung into a vision different from the others.

Briarwhisker being convinced to join Forestclan. Meeting Dawnstorm and being disgusted with his loudness and over-eagerness with everything.
Snowfoot joining the clan out of curiosity and a desire for safety. Meeting Briarwhisker and initially being annoyed with her aloofness. Meeting Dawnstorm and being amused with his terrible jokes and enjoying his enthusiasm for life.
Snowfoot and Briarwhisker becoming unlikely friends but having their differences regarding Dawnstorm.
Daisywhisker, brother of Dawnstorm, joining the clan and Briarwhisker becoming intrigued.
Snowfoot finally admitting her love to Dawnstorm. "I will be with you forever."
Briarwhisker working up the courage to tell Dawnstorm that while they might have their differences, she loved his brother and wanted to tell him that she would try to put their differences aside. "I don't like you but I can work with you."

If two people, so different from each other, could become such close friends, then he would use their lessons to build community within his clan and alliances with others.
"It is now time for me to give you your next life," said Crowcloud, appearing from somewhere within the crowd.
Applenose turned to the first medicine cat he had ever known. One of the bravest cats, too. "I'm ready," he said softly, moving forward.
"Then let me give you your sixth life--the ability to let go."

Bramblebush coughed weakly and Dustleaf moved to give him some water-filled moss. He drank eagerly but when Crowcloud touched his nose to the elder's fur, felt a sickly heat radiating from it.
Next to Bramblebush lay Acornstream, who was mercifully asleep. He had been ranting and raving every time he woke up for the past few days, which boded ill for his survival.
"Is dad going to live?" asked Dustleaf, moving to where Crowcloud sat.
Crowcloud opened his mouth and closed it, unable to speak for a moment. Finally, he managed to get out: "I-I don't know. If Starclan wills it."
Dustleaf made no movement and Crowcloud nuzzled her, trying to comfort her to the best of his abilities. He had already resigned to the fact that his patients would likely die but seeing Dustleaf's reaction simply broke his heart. He wanted to assure her that nothing would ever happen to her parents but he couldn't. He couldn't be so cruel as to give her hope when there was none. May Starclan forgive me, he thought sadly, looking at the now-peaceful form of Bramblebush. And may Starclan grant peace to my apprentice.

"The next morning, Acornstream and Bramblebush died," said Crowcloud quietly, bringing Applenose from his thoughts. "I'm sure you remember the rest."
Applenose nodded, recalling Duckpelt's eulogy. He was a kind and brave tom, her voice seemed to say. The perfect father. "I do," he said quietly. "How could I forget?"
"Never forget, but don't dwell on the past," said Crowcloud. "Don't let your failures drag you down because there will always be a chance in the future to rectify your mistakes."
Applenose nodded and Crowcloud moved back into the crowd. Now two kits moved forward and his eyes widened. They could only be Bleakkit and Sorrelkit, who had died days after birth. Their parents, Birchnose and Alderclaw, were right behind them. Supervising. They look so big, Applenose thought in wonder. But then, he supposed, they could have grown up in Starclan.
"We've come to give you the life of overcoming challenges," said one of the kits confidently. The silver tabby. Bleakkit.
Applenose locked eyes with Sorrelkit, who mouthed that her brother was a pain. He chuckled and locked eyes with Alderclaw who simply made a motion with his tail. Birchnose, too, said nothing but smiled. With a sharp jerk of his head, Applenose crouched down to touch noses with the two kits.

In her sister's dreams, she explained why it was so important not to eat whatever they caught. She was so proud of herself for remembering what Alderclaw had told her about honor and the Warrior Code.
She watched as Dustleaf chose then-Larkpaw as her apprentice and had asked Crowcloud if she could learn some healing knowledge herself. The black tom had agreed and together, the siblings trained--though one was alive and the other dead.

"I have come to give you your eighth life," the elder rumbled, voice powerful. His eyes softened with humor. "Perhaps you have heard this enough times in your life," he said, "but it is wise to listen to your elders."
Applenose dipped his head. "Indeed," he said in agreement. "I had to listen to quite a few lectures on that."
Bramblebush smiled. "Then let me lecture you one last time."

Bramblebush pushed himself to his paws to greet Smokepaw as she dropped a finch in front of him. "Thank you," he purred. Smokepaw huffed and looked as though she were about to say something but instead, backed out of the den. Bramblebush settled back down, bringing his shaking legs underneath him. A small glance to the side showed that Grayfur, the blind elder who was his denmate, was still asleep. With a twitch of his tail, he scooped the finch closer to himself and began to nibble at it.
He supposed that he shouldn't complain about the apprentices, as they generally didn't complain within earshot. But he did hope that they would understand in time, why it was so important to listen to their elders. Why it was so important to understand their clan's history, little as there was. Already, he was gathering stories to tell the apprentices.
He heard the chatter as a patrol came back in, bearing news of the borders. Looking up, he saw Cherryclaw, Ashstripe, and Aspentail talking excitedly. He smiled; those three looked to be such good friends and he could only be happy for them. They were a good example, he thought, of what friendship could and should be. He filed that away to tell another time. Perhaps he would tell Scorchkit a tale of three good friends who would follow each other to the ends of the world. He saw love flash in Cherryclaw's eyes as she met Ashstripe's eyes and Bramblebush smiled. Life was very good.

Applenose emerged from the peaceful vision and gave a bittersweet smile. "If only we'd had you for longer," he said hoarsely. "You and Grayfur."
Bramblebush snorted, amused. "We elders who aren't clanborn come to you only for a little while. So long as you remember us and pass on our stories, then we've done our job."
Applenose's heart pounded. Grayfur, Bramblebush, Dippercloud, and Goosetail. All elders who had joined the clan and died in the clan. "The kits are brought up on the stories you told."
Bramblebush smiled and dipped his head. Without another word, he faded back into the crowd. And finally, Honeystar stepped forward once again. Her healthy appearance was so startling, in comparison to the aging leader he remembered her as.
"It is time for you to receive your final life," she said, voice echoing slightly. Her eyes shone with something that Applenose couldn't identify. "With this life, I strip you of your life and identity as a warrior, and replace it with the life and identity of a leader. With this life, you shall be hailed no more as Applenose. You will be called Applestar, leader and protector of Forestclan."
Applenose shuddered as he breathed. "I am ready," he said quietly, "to receive this final life."
Honeystar smiled...triumphant? "Then let me give you your final life, the life of conviction and leadership. Be firm in your decisions and remember that you can't undo the past."
I know, Applenose thought with no small bit of regret. If only they could have known about the traitor earlier. If only they could have prevented the fire. If only they could have prevented the badgers. If only. If only. But there was no hesitation as he leaned forward to touch Honeystar's nose.

Honeystar sobbed as she lay next to Birchnose's mauled corpse. How could she have fallen to something as simple to rid as a fox? For it was a fox's scent that suffused the body.
"Honeystar," said a voice. "Honeystar, you have to get up. We have to bury her."
Honeystar looked up through rage-stained eyes to see Dustleaf standing there, next to Applenose and Barleystream. Applenose had been the speaker and his tail twitched angrily. Who could have left her alone? the whole wondered. Had this been a set-up?
"I know," Honeystar murmured. She took one last look at her friend's body. Silver, black, and red blended together. Copper eyes looking ahead in horror. What had she seen in those final moments? Who had she cried to for help? Had there been anyone? The leader stood, shaking herself. "In front of this clan," she said loudly and carefully, "I appoint Applenose as my deputy, as he has shown courage, steadfastness, care, and kindness. He has been with the clan for many seasons and has trained two apprentices. I trust that he will fill the role of deputy well, and will be a good leader after me."
There was silence. Silence from the warriors who surrounded them. Silence from the apprentices who huddled together, comforting Birchnose's kits. Silence from Mila and Isidora, who kept the three kits from looking at their friend's body. Silence from the elders who had buried too many corpses, too many friends.
"There is no going back," Honeystar continued, "so we must move forward and take what we have learned with us." She looked around. "Birchnose will be buried by her mate, Alderclaw. We will remember all that they have given us. And all that they could have done. We will mourn, but we will stand. For we are Forestclan and we will stand as long as the trees do." There was murmur of agreement and finally, the clan began to move again.

As Applestar came out of his vision, he heard cats chanting his new name. "Applestar! Applestar!" the cats of Starclan cried. He caught the eyes of those who had given him his nine lives. He saw those who had been hovering at the edges of his vision. And he saw four cats, unfamiliar to him, standing next to Minkstar. His breath caught as he recognized an older Ashpaw, a jovial Swiftfur, a calm Dustwhisker, and a steady molly he assumed was Goosetail. Minkstar's old clanmates had finally rejoined him. The scene faded until he finally emerged from his dream, a strange energy suffusing his body.
"Are you ready?" asked Dustleaf once he had gotten his bearings.
"Yes. Let's head home."
Applestar. Not Applenose. Applestar, leader and protector of Forestclan. He smiled, knowing that his friends and family would be, were proud of him. He surged forward, eager to get home as soon as possible.

Scorchpelt had been courting Tipnose for some time now, and she had reciprocated his affections. Finally, after almost two moons, he had asked if she was willing to be his mate. She had flung herself onto him, in the middle of camp, and he had been embarrassed in front of all the warriors who were relaxing that day. But he hadn't minded, not at all. Not when he was now mates with such a beautiful young molly who held such sadness but pushed through it regardless. He promised to himself to face it together, that he would help her with whatever came next.

Aspentail ducked his head into the nursery where he saw Isidora's eyes glittering in the comforting darkness. His kits lay sleeping, apparently having just finished a round of feeding. They were all so...perfect. He had believed that he could simply impregnate Honeystar and not need to care for the kits. It had simply been a donation, a little help. But once Honeystar had died, he knew that the kits would need a father. So he had stepped up. Cherryclaw and Ashstripe visited, too, as though Honeystar's kits were the kits that they would never have. Weren't interested in having.
"How are they?" he asked in a whispered tone.
"Doing fine," replied Isidora with a yawn. "Beechkit and Minkkit are going to be trouble when they're older."
Aspentail chuckled softly. "I'm sure their mentor will be well-equipped to deal with them."
"I'd hope so."
Aspentail backed out on padded feet, knowing that Isidora wasn't likely to tolerate his presence for much longer. She was tired. So were they all.

Arguspaw traveled to the Moonpool with his mentor, Mila, and the deputy, Boulderpelt. The three of them were completely silent on the day-long journey and tension kept building up. Finally, they reached the serene pool that glittered with secrets.
"Just drink some water and go to sleep," said Boulderpelt softly, staring at something that Arguspaw couldn't see. "And then your assessments will begin when you get back home."
The apprentice nodded. He had been learning fast and his littermates were jealous. All he said in return was that he still wouldn't be considered an adult until twenty moons, just like they'd be. He looked down and drank some of the frigid water. Then, he lay down to await the night's dreams.

Eira, the blind molly, was currently responsible for taking care of her, seeing as she was to be going into labor soon and she would need all the assistance she could get. Adolpha soon give birth to her new kits safely, if Eira carries out the proper procedures well then yeah, the kits would be perfectly fine. As the she-cat called out her name again, Eira came skidding over to attend her; a bit worn out that she was being called over again in the last five minutes. “Do you at least have any herbal remedies for this pain to go away? It hurts so bad.” She groans and whines, making Eira roll her eyes. “For the last time, Adolpha. I said I don’t, you’re just going to have to let it subside like many other she-cats do.” Adolpha may be a sweetheart, to Eira at least since for the past moon they would keep each other company, but she was complaining too much … Sure, she was going into labor that is, but it had only been fifteen minutes. “You don’t know the pain I’m going through right now…” murmured Adolpha, her voice barely above a whisper though catching the ear of Eira without restraint. Eira said nothing; just silently wishing that she could have gone with the others instead.
indent Speaking of the others, they had all went out to the lámpsi pool to view the altar and give the God and Goddess a peace offering. The League had to do this after Freki supposedly had requested something from them, and as expected of the deities, they would want compensation. They took the fresh carcass of a cottontail rabbit up there with them, deciding that that would be their gift in return. Seems like a bland gift to me, thought Eira, but who knows really? They must be famine up there in those grey skies, Eira huffed at that idea. The molly had walked out to the stream that was surprisingly still flowing through the premises of winter, its surface glistening and clear. Eira grabbed the smaller, sturdy piece of bark from a birch tree and repeatedly attempted to fill it with water from the stream. Each time she lifted the bark, the water came flowing gliding out onto the ground; ebbing Eira in irritation. For Adolpha, she kept reminding herself; those who are in labor need their fluids. Once finally managing to keep the water contained inside the bark, she cautiously carried it back to the base to Adolpha, hoping that she would not have to make the long distance to refill again.
indent “Here you are, Adolpha,” she gritted through her teeth, dropping the bark piece down in front of the wary she-cat. Adolpha inspected it warily, sniffing at the bark as if it could be poisonous and deathly. “It’s just a piece of bark with water in it; the water is from the stream, so drink it.” Adolpha halted and gave in with hesitance, lapping at the cool water until it was completely gone. The she-cat stared blankly at the bark piece for a moment, seemingly hazy as expected, before glancing back up at Eira. “More, please?” she simply inquired, causing for Eira to sigh and flick her tail. “Yeah, okay.” She dipped her head and snatched it away, scowling behind the latter’s back. Who knew that she would be so much work? Not Eira, not Eira. “While you’re at it, go collect some herbs, please!” she hollered just as she walked out the den.
indent The air temperature had seemingly dropped more as the day progressed; nippy wind was all Eira could feel as her paw pads felt cold from the ground’s contact. For the past fifteen minutes, the she-cat repeatedly trying to catch the water once again through her milky eyes. For some odd reason, her blindness wasn’t seeming to affect her as much as before; having no problem with recognizing the many distinct voices of her fellows and other animals as well as the pathways to certain places and back. As of now, she heard the tranquilizing purling of the stream in front of her eyes and the loud rustling of leaves in the distance. Wait, rustling? Eira jerked upwards towards the sound, dropping the piece of bark that went down with the stream’s flow. This all seemed like an odd case of déjà vu; just like that day where she came across the young lad, Achilles. Though this would not be Achilles, but someone else instead. This was … bad, she could die for the Gods’ sake. Eira was just about to turn and run back before she heard someone call out to her, “Wait!” they said, voice high-pitched and youthful. Common sense screamed at her to continue running, but like the flea-brained idiot she was, Eira stopped in her tracks.
indent “Miss,” they then said, the sound of soft pitter patter coming her way. Now in front of her was a young, she-cat with a bluish grey tabby coat and bright olive eyes. She was thin looking, her ribs clearly visible and sticking out on her sides; besides her ribs, she could also see her spine sticking up at her rump and her bony tail. The she-cat was clearly a mess, and another thing that proudly stood out about her was her dark leather collar with a shining golden bell pendant attached to it. “P-Please,” her voice rasped as she stared up at Eira with all her boniness. “Can you please help me?” It was just like she was meeting a reincarnation of Achilles; the she cat was the same with her timid nature. Eira, being a total softie, could not just leave her out here to die, which clearly wouldn’t be long if she were to stay; so, she shook her head and sighed loudly, a puff of her breath appearing and dissipating. “Yes, love. Come with me.” She says out of courtesy in a sweet manner; the skinny she-cat lifting her head in disbelief and gratitude. “T-Thank you…” she then thanks once they were back.
indent “You must be so tired and hungry, please help yourself,” chattered Adolpha once she saw the new arrival, who kept her distance as she shook from coldness and anxiety. “Thanks …” she, Bella, says as she stumbles out of the den with a weak smile on her face. Eira stood in the opening of the den, watching as she went over to the food pile to pick a fresh kill before turning back to the pregnant she-cat. “Sorry for not getting your water and herbs, she just came and frightened me …” Adolpha groaned as soon as she apprehended what she said, lifting her head tiredly before it fell to the ground again. “Just relax, Adolpha, and you’ll get through this.” The blind molly turned to her, “Now stay here, I’ll be out talking with Bella.”
indent Eira shivered as a freezing gust flew overhead, her paw pads merely turning an icy blue. Over at where all their fresh kill was stored, she saw the feline picking at a freshly killed salmon; her body as scrawny as ever as she hunched over. Forgetting their rather awkward encounter, Eira went over to her and sat next to her. Being timid, the she-cat jumped a little at the unexpected action, though eased up as she realized who it was. She turned to face her, lime eyes luminous, “I can’t ever thank you enough for letting me stay, I’d probably die out there if I didn’t find anywhere safe like here.” The she-cat turned back to the kill, staring at it rather downheartedly. As another powerful gust past by, the she-cat’s bell pendant jingled rather loudly, startling them both. “I assume you’re from the village place, where the humans are?” Eira asks out of curiosity, ears pressing against her head as she mentions those creatures. “Yes, I am. From miles away, I used to live in this village with the humans.” she begins, ears perked high. “I never had an owner though, I've always lived on my own.”
indent “I bet you’re better off…?” Eira inquires, the she-cat making a face. “No, not really. I think it’s better being a housecat; the folk take care of you and you don’t have to worry about the simple necessities, you know?” By that, Eira could tell that she was very biased, but she was as well. “I thought humans are horrible creatures that were created in the Underworld by the deity of destruction; to take control of the mortality and fulfill their mission of overthrowing the world.” Bella looked at her as if she were crazy, a chuckle escaping her mouth.
indent “Can’t say I believe in those … stories… I don’t think they’re that bad.” Bella was not religious it seemed; she did not believe in the stories of the deities, Sol and Mani, or … the underlings? Even though she had contradicting feelings about the matter, Eira said nothing at that; if she wasn’t like everyone else, that was okay. “I see.” Was all she could say before she heard the chattering of her feline companions near the base’s entrance. They were back.
indent Eira rose to stand, Bella doing the same as she saw the unfamiliar felines coming over. She let her eyes travel over every single one of them, observing their appearance while determining their personalities. But one cat … one cat made her lime eyes widen in shock, her limbs shaking from overjoy. “C-Crescent?” she sputtered out as she recognized the she-cat in almost an instant; practically swooning over her attractive and smooth white pelt, and her heterochromic eyes that made her shiver from bliss. Crescent turned away from the latter who she was chatting with at the very mention of her name, eyes going big to match with her. “Bella?”
indent Bella raced over to her without hesitation, pressing her body all against the other she-cat as she nuzzled against her side. “Is it really you?” murmurs Bella as she withdrew from her to look her in the warm eyes. Crescent gives a slight, tiny smile in return as she butts her head against hers. “Yes, it is.” she whispers as she gives her a lick on her forehead. Eira stands a couple of tail-lengths away as she watched their moment of affection; heart melting as they began to remember each other. It appears that they knew each other, were they separated?
indent Everyone else watches them with the same expression; all except for Claudia, who stopped in her tracks with eyes like moons and a barely visible frown. In her chest, she could feel … pain; she felt pain as she watched them, her heart aching and throbbing. Why was she like this? She wasn’t sure but seeing Crescent talking because she met one of her past acquaintances made her a bit disappointed. Ever since this morning, she felt like she got closer to the strange she-cat; actually getting her talk once … but only once. Though those simple statements that she would say in response to her was nothing compared to the actual words of emotion that were spewing from her mouth right now.
indent After Bella introduced herself to each one of the cats, they all sat in a small crook where the two birches were located; praying that the god and goddess would accept their offering of peace. They all told stories and folktale; those about the great Urma and her lover Kade and how she slain him for committing infidelity; another about Cole and how he seized control of the lands during the Golden Time; and Timothy, a kit that was a bad omen. Crescent and Bella were nestled up against each other while Claudia kept to herself a bit further away from the others.
indent After the night had overcome them, Claudia had the mind to excuse herself during the storytelling. “I’m going in for the night.” They all give her a look of confusion; it wasn’t even time to go to bed, but Claudia insisted on leaving. “Claudia!” cries Garth as he tries to ask her to stay for just one more story, clearly wanting everyone to listen to his. Though as much as he begged, Claudia shook her head and carried on, everyone watching as she scurries away before Garth continues. Crescent watches as she goes, head tilting slightly as she was puzzled by her behavior though feeling sympathy for whatever reason why she was acting this way. “What’s wrong?” questions Bella; Crescent says nothing more and keeps by her side.
indent Claudia couldn’t help herself; she had to leave from there. She felt jealous and resentful, something that would not settle in the deities’ eyes; it was sinful. Though seeing Crescent with someone else was somehow getting to her, having some sort of longing. Maybe it was because she never had someone like that before, not a mate nor even a friend. For as long as she could remember, she’s been alone her entire life, and she though that perhaps Crescent had something in common in with her; that they were both alone but turns out she was wrong.
indent With eyes of green, Claudia sulked away into the night.

Frostwhisker, having confessed to being a rouge before Kwamiclan, had been accepted right into the ranks of Guardian. Eagletalon had been rather annoyed by that, but Eagleeye, who'd just ranked up into Guardian, had been happy for the addition, instead of having to be the only new Guardian in the den.

↪ While out VanillaStrike comes across two rouges fighting over a scrap of trampled quail meat, she helps the losing side (the white cat) and with her help drives the other rouge out. The white molly introduced herself as Copper, and thanks her. Before VanillaStrike can leave the rouge asks if she may join the clan. The deputy uncomfortable replies that it isn't up to her and its up to HemlockStar if she lets the molly in or not. But she agrees when Copper asks if she could go ask her.

She was drained from kitting, every bit of energy that she had mustered up had completely vanished once she had finished. Eira tends to the newborns’ needs as she was unable to at the time, nudging every kit until they let out a squeak of infuriation. She could feel tiny paws kneading against her, little cries and whines that made her heart melt in adoration. In her haze, she glances up at her caretaker to see if her expression is similar; upon seeing her face, she comes to a realization: something was wrong.

Adolpha lets out a strangled cry as she tries to lift her body up to see her newborns; three squirmed and tumbled around; three more laid limply with mere life in their bodies. “Eira?!” she hisses as she tries to awaken one of the kits, a tortoiseshell kit that seemed too frail and feeble in her eyes. “Eira?! What’s wrong with them?!” she cries out once more as she attempts to wake up another, a tuxedo kit that was just like the other. Eira listens to her frightened and terrified voice as she stares at the ground with a dejected face. “I’m sorry, Adolpha,” she murmurs to the dame, who turns to gawk at her with broadened eyes. “they’re dead.” It felt like a part of her died; all sounds tuned out…

Why did she have to lose half of her litter? Was this planned by the deities themselves? How sickening; what did she do? The she-cat observes her remaining kits, the three, who all crawl over each other and call out to their mother as they feel the morning chill. Adolpha gives them all a lick on the head, noticing one of them trying to venture further away from the nest. “Where do you think you’re going?” she chuckles at the white kit with bluish grey blanches. He whines as he is tugged back near safety, obviously appearing to be the most adventurous out of the three. “What are their names?” Freki asks her as he watches them with adorning eyes. One of them, a kit with a grey pelt and white markings, was named Bonita, a lovely she-kit with a lovely voice --- always singing songs to her during the night; another, a black and white tuxedo kit just like one of the stillborn kits, his name was Ekon --- he was strong and knocked down the other two whenever he wanted to get to where he wanted, the first born; and lastly, Lapis, the white and bluish grey kit, who was such a strange yet cute one in everyone’s eyes – he was the most adventurous and just as lively as Bonita. “Those are lovely names.” Freki compliments as he smiles down at them all.
indent During the first week of keeping an eye on her kits, she could tell that being a mother was difficult; even though that she only had three annoying, little rascals to care for. One time, Lapis almost tried to follow her out of the den when she went to eat in the morning with the others. Luckily, before he could get himself into trouble or possibly hurt, Garth had caught sight of him and told her and she ran to his aide in almost an instant; only managing to get a few bites in for the morning. Sometimes her mind would always go back to her departed kits, wondering if the deities though this was a good idea? Maybe she had no skill in parenting; she had never been a mother, but now she was. She sings the three a song every night when they are headed to bed, her voice soft and motherly just like every mother’s should be; though she wasn’t quite sure that they could hear her yet. Second week in and she’s already tired, wanting to get up and do something, but her kits were holding her back and she needed to be there for them; some cats here were deemed untrustworthy guardians in her eyes.
indent Everything seemed at ease during this moon, everyone was getting along okay. Crescent and Bella were always seen together, clearly inseparable after being reunited with each other a month ago. Many wonder about their past before they arrived here but are not nosy enough to ask; they seem to be fond of each other, but they are quick to deny their romantic affections. Bella has traveled for nine moons ever since she left her home, which was also the home of the humans; her past is considered unruly, but she thinks otherwise. Crescent’s past hasn’t been heard of, she’s too closed in to open up; she only talks to Bella really, but getting her to speak is far too difficult so many give up in trying to converse with her; she’s better off with the one who can really understand her. Meanwhile, Claudia has become less tense over the past moon; calming somewhat down from her jealousy. She sneaks out all the time, no where knows where she goes but she’s always away… Sometimes she spends time with Crescent, but it never ends well.
indent “Why don’t you talk?” she asks Crescent one night as they were heading back to their dens to rest in. The white she-cat stares at her in a hushed silence, seemingly observing the features of her face before turning away. She shakes her head as she rejected the question, leaving Claudia in a disappointed awe. Claudia sighs and refrains from talking to her for the rest of the moon, deciding not to aggravate her; she knew she was a bit hotheaded. Seeing her and Bella cuddling next to each other made her feel that familiar pang of hurt; she hides in the corner of the den, back turned away from them.
indent Days past on, and it’s the same routine. Everything is regular; everything is fine. Will the deities let this prosperity continue?
