Silence. This is what a tabby tom is listening to, and he is poised to run. Ready to make a move as soon as something breaks that silence. He is peering into the darkness carefully, nearly holding his breath so that he can hear any small sound that is made.
Suddenly, without warning, a piercing screech fills the air and causes the tom to nearly fall off of his perch. He whirls around, nearly panting, heart thundering in his chest. He peers through the darkness, looking at the shape of another cat. He growls, sitting back down and hunching his back in anger. Beside him, the newcomer sidled up, nearly touching him, and let out an amused sound.
"You are the worst cat I have ever met," the tom says into the darkness, growling out his words. "If you weren't my sister I would tackle you and hurt you right here."
The she-cat purrs lightly, touching her brother's back with the tip of her tail. "Oh, come on Artie. You know they aren't going to open that door long enough for you to get out anyway. Besides, what's the point in leaving? They feed us, and they really are quite nice. Not to mention they are pretty warm, if you give them a chance and sit on them."
Artie growled louder, his fur rising on his back. "I hate them, and you know they hate me. I'm surprised they bother feeding me that disgusting food anymore."
"I don't think they hate you. They really do seem to want you to like them."
Artie didn't respond. He resumed his post, staring at the doorway, hoping to make his grand escape.

That night, Artie dreamed of escape. It seemed so real, so vivid... all he had to do was wait for them to let his sister out... and he could be free! A strange tom seemed to haunt his dream as well... a dark gray tom, his amber eyes glowing and seeming to invite him out into the forest, where Artie had been longing to go ever since he was a kit. A fleeting glance at another cat, her belly swollen with kits... a voice whispering to him that these cats could be his family, if he could only get out that door...

In the morning, Artie took his chance as soon as the Twolegs were awake. They were groggy today, and Artie used it to his advantage. He snuck out as soon as the door was opened, following his sister like a shadow. She made a sound of surprise as he jetted past her before racing to keep up with him. Artie heard her trying to say something, and heard the Twolegs shouting as well, but he didn't stop until he reached the forests' edge, where he knew the Twolegs wouldn't go. He looked back briefly to see his sister come trotting into the forest behind him.
"Where are you going?" She demanded, out of breath, sitting down as soon as she reached him.
"Away," Artie responded gruffly, stalking away from her, not wanting to deal with her asking for him to go back to those Twolegs. "If you were smart, you would follow me, Peach."
"I... I can't, Artie. I want to, but I like it here. They take care of me... out there it's... cold, and unforgiving. You know that right?"
"Yes. But I have a plan."
He continued to leave, and Peach stayed where she was. Artie did not look back.

Artie was shivering by the time he found a small pond. It was mostly frozen over, covered in snow, but he knew a cat had to have come through here. Judging by the fresh footprints, it was recent. He tracked them, sniffing the air occassionally, excitement bubbling up inside him as he realized the cat was close. It was inside a small alcove, where a sort of glowing puddle seemed to be.
"Hello?" He called out softly, trying not to startle the cat.
The cat turned, seemingly delighted, exiting the small alcove. "Wow, that was pretty fast! I didn't know you would be here so soon."
"You... knew I was coming?" Artie asked, taken aback.
The other cat nodded vigourously, definitely excited. "Yeah! Here, I'll tell you all about it on our way back to camp. I could use some food, and you probably could too."

Back at the ShiningClan cabin, Scorchstar introduced Firesong to his new medicine cat, Artie. He had learned all about Artie's past, living in a Twoleg den for his entire life. He had grown bored of his life after a year or two, taking to running away as often as he could. He was scared to venture too far most of the time, so his Twolegs always brought him back, and after he last escape when he evaded capture for almost a moon, they kept him inside permanently. Artie told Scorchstar of his sister, Peach, who he had hoped would follow him but did not. Scorchstar also learned that Artie was incredible with herbs and herb recognition, and asked him to be a medicine cat, to which Artie wholeheartedly agreed.
"ShiningClan, I would like to call a Clan gathering." Scorchstar announced, after getting both Artie and Firesong some fresh-kill from the pile. "From this day forward, ShiningClan now has a medicine cat. For the rest of his time as a part of ShiningClan, Artie's new name shall be Nettleblaze. We honor his wisdom and his determination." Scorchstar reached out, touching his nose gently to Nettleblaze's head. Nettleblaze lifted his head high, giving a short nod to Scorchstar in thanks.
"I will serve this Clan proudly," Nettleblaze said. "Now, to find a place for some herbs and a place for me to sleep..."

Leafbare
For some, the first snows have arrived. For others, it is simply a chill in the air. Regardless, all clans will experience leafbare as a harsh and unforgiving season. Queens and kits are more likely to die during birth, prey will flee from patrols, and loners are less likely to stray from their warm city homes. In addition, predators and sicknesses abound, waiting for the chance to pick off the weak. All in all, it is best for a clan to be at full strength during this time.

Last moon
Morningstar watched as Spottednose stuck his nose into her tree trunk den from the camp. She chuckled when she saw that he was annoyed that she wasn't there. "Over here, Spottednose." She called and he trotted over. Hm, that's not good if he's traveling faster than a walk. She frowned. This meant he probably wasn't just going to chastise her for not resting like he had requested. She had even recently trekked to the Moonpool.
"Morningstar, I need to talk with you." Spottednose's eyes darted back and forth. "Privately."
"Alright," She nodded. "Let's take a walk." She waited for him to protest that it was 'too much energy', either for her or him, but he relented. After they had gotten a fair bit away from camp, he sat, more like slumped, on the ground into the snowdrift.
"I still don't know for sure what happened earlier." He said defeated. "I thought it might have been the deathberries at first."
"At first? Did the thrush eat the berries before we caught it?" She wondered how far a bird could fly after it had eaten poisonous berries.
"No," Spottednose paused. "It would mean that someone would have, um, put them there. But there are still berries where I left them."
"So, then I didn't eat deathberries." Morningstar shrugged. "I really don't remember much from that afternoon. I was just eating, I don't know."
"Well, there are berries where I left them. I don't know if they're the original ones for sure, but some sort of berries are there." Spottednose sputtered. "They do look remarkably like deathberries if they are substitutes, but I can't be certain until I test them. And that doesn't seem like the greatest idea right now, you know?"
"Okay," Morningstar stopped his rambling. "But who would want me to lose a life?"
Spottednose shuffled on his paws. "That is also another problem."
"What, do you have someone in mind?" Morningstar asked aghast. Spottednose opened his mouth, thought better of it, then shook his head. "Then let's go about life as usual." She turned and started the walk back to camp.
Spottednose stopped her with a heavy paw to her shoulder. "Doesn't this make you the slightest bit uneasy?"
She met his eyes. "Of course, but what sort of leader would I be if I showed it?"

"Get up, Morningstar." A familiar voice called to her. Morningstar's memory was foggy, and when she opened her eyes, she was laying on the ground. As she pushed herself to her feet, however, the forest around her was not her forest. She was in StarClan. She turned slightly to the owner of the soft voice, Rainstar, and started when she noticed a faint outline of a cat that looked like herself sitting next to him. "You've lost a life, Morningstar." The old leader gestured to the ghostly figure of herself. Morningstar batted at the figure, but her paw just fell through the air. "It won't become complete until you have lost all nine of your lives." Rainstar explained.
"Alright," Morningstar said. "That wasn't too bad, I suppose." She met his eyes. "But, I do need to return to TwistedClan."
"Close your eyes," Rainstar rested his muzzle on her head. "But remember, live for yourself, Morningstar. Not the past."

Birchwhisker was starting to enjoy spending time with Copperleaf. They passed time on the border patrol speaking about snippets from their pasts and meaningless other small talk. Birchwhisker found that Copperleaf had a reassuring presence, and she seemed to really care about her stories. In fact, Birchwhisker was sure she was telling the majority of the stories, and Copperleaf was mostly listening. Telling stories also distracted the fact that the two she-cats were wading belly-deep in the snow. Suddenly, Copperleaf's tail snapped across Birchwhisker's back, and the two halted. "See that?" Copperleaf pointed her muzzle in the direction of a fiery orange cat in the distance.
"Good eye." While its orange coat did stick out in the snowy landscape, Birchwhisker was only paying attention to the immediate area in front of them. Birchwhisker took the lead now; her coat blended in better against the snow piles. As they got closer, the cat, who could now be identified as a tom, turned when he heard the crunching footsteps approaching.
"Well, howdy," The tom greeted. "Bit chilly to be all the way out in the open, isn't it?"
"You could come back to our camp," Birchwhisker suggested. "It's a lot more sheltered than here." And thus, Gingerblaze was welcomed into the clan as another warrior.
Stormstrike held back small branches so he could peek at Rainpaw's progress. Her claws dug into the soft birch bark as she inched closer to the thick branch her mentor was perched on. "Move your back paw on the ridge to your left." He suggested.
"No, no, I have it!" Rainpaw said through gritted teeth, although her back paw did find the ridge. Ripping her paws out of the bark and sticking them back in a few pawlengths up, Rainpaw eventually clambered onto the branch that held Stormstrike.
"Good, Rainpaw!" Stormstrike purred. "Now, this way!" He nimbly ran to the end of the branch and leaped onto a slightly lower branch of another tree. This tree leaned heavily in their direction, so it was an easy jump. He turned to see Rainpaw's eyes wide. "It's easier if you just go for it." A determined look fell upon the soft apprentice's face, and she jumped into the air and landed on the side of the branch, her back half sliding off. Stormstrike lunged and yanked her back onto the branch. "Good, let's try again on the next tree."
Present
Silverstem shifted from paw to paw. She was very thankful her ancestors, or she guessed StarClan as these cats called them, had guided her to TwistedClan. Expecting kits was a daunting enough thought in the nicest circumstances, but now being around a support system with knowledgable cats was reassuring. While she certainly didn't need anyone to look after her, this was her first litter and she hadn't been keen on going through it alone. "Anything I can help with, Spottednose?" She stuck her head into the sheltered medicine cat bush, sending a good amount of snow raining down. A loud sigh came from the back.
"I've already said that everything is going great." A sharp reply came from the temperamental medicine cat. "You're healthy, I don't need to be told how to do my job, and you can come back in two moons when you're actually going to have your kits." Spottednose shooed her out. "I don't care how you spend your time, as long as it's not here."
Silverstem didn't let his sour attitude dampen hers, however. If he wasn't worried about anything other than his own organization methods, there shouldn't be any reason for her to worry either.
The snow provided a soft blanket covering across the clearing. Stormstrike was staking out a new training area for training sessions. He had wandered around for a good while before deciding on an area slightly uphill from the main camp. The trees on the edge of the small clearing were thick with low hanging branches, perfect for building better confidence for hunting and climbing in the treetops. The ground was mostly clear from bushes and taller grasses, but it was difficult to see underneath the piles of snow. Stormstrike started up a trunk as he heard pawsteps coming closer in the snow. He laid on a branch as Copperleaf came into view.
"Isn't this good for our new training grounds?" He called out while lazily swinging his tail back and forth. The deputy scrutinized the landscape before her.
"I think this looks perfect," Copperleaf finally decided. "Although, it will be easier to tell after all this retched snow melts away."
Stormstrike purred. "Perfect. I think Rainpaw will enjoy training here as well."
"Her final warrior assessment will be coming up soon." Copperleaf reminded him. "Do you think she will be ready?"
"I think so," Stormstrike shimmied down the tree trunk to land next to the deputy. "She really tries her best."
"That's all we can ever ask for."
Spottednose watched a sparrow land in front of the bush he was hiding in. The bird was inspecting the berry in front of it very intently, hopping around it and bobbing its head up and down. Spottednose hoped that the bird would gulp it down and keel over dead, not for sadistic purposes but to know for sure if the berries in his collection were still deathberries. Just as he thought the sparrow would finally eat the berry, Sunchaser and Rainpaw walked into view, conversing about the latest patrols. Naturally, the sparrow took flight, and Spottednose spat in annoyance.
Startled, Sunchaser spun around until he saw the angry medicine cat. "Spottednose!" The young tom bounded forward to greet him, and in the process of his excitement, he stomped on the berries.
"Get back, you fool!" Spottednose shoved Sunchaser away, and he cried out indignantly.
"We have as much right to be walking through here as you do!" Sunchaser rolled his eyes. Spottednose ignored this as he pawed the squished remains of his experiment.
"Was that something important?" Rainpaw had crept closer and watched the tom's annoyance curiously.
"Not anymore," Spottednose sighed. "I'm sure it was nothing anyway." It was probably nothing, right? I guess we'll never know for sure, he thought. I'm just overthinking things now. "Make sure you get all that berry juice off on your paws in the snow." Spottednose warned. "It'll probably make you ill."

wind whistled through halcyonclan’s camp, a cloak of grief hanging over the clearing. most of the sheltered dens were empty, as a large fraction of the clan was out hunting, patrolling, or training. the occasional mew of hungry kits sounded from the nursery, but all else was silent. suddenly, the bramble walls protecting the entrance shuddered, and three felines emerged, whispering excitedly. “stop! you’re both going too fast for me!” marcus’ orange pelt glowed in the sunlight, and he waddled after pippa and jax, who had slowed to wait for him. their hushed meows carried into the nursery, and eleanor poked her head out, weary. “ah, hello, you three! say, jax, would you mind taking flashkit out to play mossball? he’s gotten restless with no other kits to play with.” the sentinel nodded enthusiastically, and flashkit sprung out from underneath eleanor’s paws. “let’s go! come on, jax!” the pair bounded off together, leaving pippa and marcus alone with eleanor. “right, well, i’ve kits to tend to. take care, you lot!” the queen disappeared into the nursery, flicking her tail in farewell.

julius sat alone at the base of an old oak, thoughts consuming him. memories of the murders in the past two moons clouded his mind, overwhelming him with anxiety. his head spun, and trembles overcame him. he struggled to breathe, sharp pains in his chest. what’s happening? julius screamed out silently, but of course, nobody answered. he instinctively curled up into a ball, feeling like a helpless kit again. now, he could only wait until this hell subsided.

two felines lounged in a tree, watching the stars glow dimly above the clearing. one spoke, their voice husky. “this will be the big one. are you sure you’re prepared?” their eyes glinted with maliciousness, their mind at work like cogs in a clock. “always.” their companion responded, though seeming unsure. “perfect.”

that night
marcus sat at the edge of the cliffside clearing, a steep fall in front of him. he had been watching the waterfalls for quite a while. now, it wasn’t his intent to, but he simply couldn’t sleep after the murders. it was long past sundown, but sunrise seemed equally as far. fireflies buzzed around his head, but he didn’t mind; they distracted him. suddenly, a twig snapped behind him, and he whipped his head around, on alert. “who’s there?” he hissed, bristling his fur. unfortunately, the tiny munchkin was not very threatening, and looked adorable, as if cotton had been dyed orange and grown cat-like features.
leaves rustled and a siamese molly wriggled out from behind a bush. “thank starclan, it’s just you, pippa. you nearly scared the fur off me.” pippa smiled gently, seeming distant. marcus didn’t seem to notice, like the oblivious sweetheart he is. “i’m sorry.” pippa whispered, tears beginning to well up in her sapphire eyes. “sorry? for wh-“ marcus began, but a force slammed into the munchkin, knocking the wind out of him. he was sent sprawling across the cliffside, his head spinning. in a whirlwind of confusion, he flailed out, but that was a mistake. his back paws slipped off the edge, and his eyes widened in fear. he yowled, struggling to hold on to the cliff with his front paws. a cat appeared over him, but it wasn’t pippa. “time’s up, marcus.” they latched onto his front paws, tossing him off. tears streamed from his eyes, and he swore he saw the tall figure of a serval at the top of the cliff, screaming out to him. with that, he blacked out and hit the surface of a lake, the water engulfing him.

julius’ voice was hoarse as he yowled marcus’ name. surprisingly, the murderers had done nothing to him as he cried in agony for his trainee. thoughts of sabra filled his mind, and he turned around to face them, his face expressionless. “you’ll pay for that.” the cat who seemed to be the mastermind behind this grinned slyly. “with your life, of course.”
the pair of criminals charged at julius, the serval knocking them off. he skidded back from the impact, rock crumbling underneath his paws. a series of swiping claws and bared teeth followed, and by the time the worst of it was over, both sides were exhausted. zedd and applemist faced julius, their sides covered with minor gashes. applemist backed away in fear, turning to run away. she pushed through the bushes, but stumbled backwards as she was met with an enraged jax. he lunged at her, clearly having the upper paw despite being smaller. the two engaged in a fight, zedd, julius, and pippa watching.
julius returned his gaze on zedd, cursing himself silently. how could he not have known? zedd had always seemed distant and hateful towards the clan. with a snarl, zedd leaped onto the serval, claws flying. one side of julius’ face went numb, and he tasted blood. the chief flung zedd off, and he landed on his back with a thud. zedd laughed, coughing up blood. julius narrowed his eyes, anger flowing through him. “go to hell, you fox-heart.” he lifted a claw, silencing the tom forever.
jax took ragged breaths, his flank mangled. applemist lay unmoving at his paws, and he looked up at a terrified pippa. “jax, i-“ he cut her off, disgusted with his sister. “don’t.” his vision went black, and he passed out, blood pooling around him.

the clan was awake when julius, jax, and pippa trudged through the camp entrance. nakia and anton stood at the front of their clanmates, trying to calm them down. a hush fell across the clearing as julius dropped zedd's body next to applemist's. "we need a vigil."

wind whistled through halcyonclan’s camp, a cloak of grief hanging over the clearing. most of the sheltered dens were empty, as a large fraction of the clan was out hunting, patrolling, or training. the occasional mew of hungry kits sounded from the nursery, but all else was silent. suddenly, the bramble walls protecting the entrance shuddered, and three felines emerged, whispering excitedly. “stop! you’re both going too fast for me!” marcus’ orange pelt glowed in the sunlight, and he waddled after pippa and jax, who had slowed to wait for him. their hushed meows carried into the nursery, and eleanor poked her head out, weary. “ah, hello, you three! say, jax, would you mind taking flashkit out to play mossball? he’s gotten restless with no other kits to play with.” the sentinel nodded enthusiastically, and flashkit sprung out from underneath eleanor’s paws. “let’s go! come on, jax!” the pair bounded off together, leaving pippa and marcus alone with eleanor. “right, well, i’ve kits to tend to. take care, you lot!” the queen disappeared into the nursery, flicking her tail in farewell.

julius sat alone at the base of an old oak, thoughts consuming him. memories of the murders in the past two moons clouded his mind, overwhelming him with anxiety. his head spun, and trembles overcame him. he struggled to breathe, sharp pains in his chest. what’s happening? julius screamed out silently, but of course, nobody answered. he instinctively curled up into a ball, feeling like a helpless kit again. now, he could only wait until this hell subsided.

two felines lounged in a tree, watching the stars glow dimly above the clearing. one spoke, their voice husky. “this will be the big one. are you sure you’re prepared?” their eyes glinted with maliciousness, their mind at work like cogs in a clock. “always.” their companion responded, though seeming unsure. “perfect.”

that night
marcus sat at the edge of the cliffside clearing, a steep fall in front of him. he had been watching the waterfalls for quite a while. now, it wasn’t his intent to, but he simply couldn’t sleep after the murders. it was long past sundown, but sunrise seemed equally as far. fireflies buzzed around his head, but he didn’t mind; they distracted him. suddenly, a twig snapped behind him, and he whipped his head around, on alert. “who’s there?” he hissed, bristling his fur. unfortunately, the tiny munchkin was not very threatening, and looked adorable, as if cotton had been dyed orange and grown cat-like features.
leaves rustled and a siamese molly wriggled out from behind a bush. “thank starclan, it’s just you, pippa. you nearly scared the fur off me.” pippa smiled gently, seeming distant. marcus didn’t seem to notice, like the oblivious sweetheart he is. “i’m sorry.” pippa whispered, tears beginning to well up in her sapphire eyes. “sorry? for wh-“ marcus began, but a force slammed into the munchkin, knocking the wind out of him. he was sent sprawling across the cliffside, his head spinning. in a whirlwind of confusion, he flailed out, but that was a mistake. his back paws slipped off the edge, and his eyes widened in fear. he yowled, struggling to hold on to the cliff with his front paws. a cat appeared over him, but it wasn’t pippa. “time’s up, marcus.” they latched onto his front paws, tossing him off. tears streamed from his eyes, and he swore he saw the tall figure of a serval at the top of the cliff, screaming out to him. with that, he blacked out and hit the surface of a lake, the water engulfing him.

julius’ voice was hoarse as he yowled marcus’ name. surprisingly, the murderers had done nothing to him as he cried in agony for his trainee. thoughts of sabra filled his mind, and he turned around to face them, his face expressionless. “you’ll pay for that.” the cat who seemed to be the mastermind behind this grinned slyly. “with your life, of course.”
the pair of criminals charged at julius, the serval knocking them off. he skidded back from the impact, rock crumbling underneath his paws. a series of swiping claws and bared teeth followed, and by the time the worst of it was over, both sides were exhausted. zedd and applemist faced julius, their sides covered with minor gashes. applemist backed away in fear, turning to run away. she pushed through the bushes, but stumbled backwards as she was met with an enraged jax. he lunged at her, clearly having the upper paw despite being smaller. the two engaged in a fight, zedd, julius, and pippa watching.
julius returned his gaze on zedd, cursing himself silently. how could he not have known? zedd had always seemed distant and hateful towards the clan. with a snarl, zedd leaped onto the serval, claws flying. one side of julius’ face went numb, and he tasted blood. the chief flung zedd off, and he landed on his back with a thud. zedd laughed, coughing up blood. julius narrowed his eyes, anger flowing through him. “go to hell, you fox-heart.” he lifted a claw, silencing the tom forever.
jax took ragged breaths, his flank mangled. applemist lay unmoving at his paws, and he looked up at a terrified pippa. “jax, i-“ he cut her off, disgusted with his sister. “don’t.” his vision went black, and he passed out, blood pooling around him.

Mousestar paused in her patrol of the farm's courtyards, ears pricking to attention. She could smell cats, and she was sure that there was milk-scent there too. Had Dawnflower already kitted? Mousestar's question was answered a heartbeat later when she saw one of the cats the smell belonged to. The tortoiseshell had her back to Mousestar and was puffed up, facing off against one of the farm's dogs. Mousestar's own back fur began to rise. The dog bounced, yelping in responce to the strange cat's hissing growls.
Mousestar flattened her fur and grabbed one of the dog's toys from the ground, deliberately squeaking it in her mouth. The dog whirled towards her, barking rapidly, and Mousestar squeaked the toy once more before dropping it and hurtling off. She made it to the nearest tree and bounded up it.
From her vantage point she could see the tortoiseshell, now skirting her way around the farm to a part the clan hadn't explored in depth yet. Mousestar made her way along the branches of the tree and lept onto the nearby farmhouse. She checked that the dog was still focused on the tree, and dropped lightly to the ground.
Circling back around to where she last saw the cat, Mousestar followed her trail until she reached a broken tractor. She called out and was met with a whirlwind of teeth, claws and tortoiseshell fur. The two mollies fought only for a couple seconds until Mousestar was able to detach herself. "Stop!" Mousestar cried, flattening her body against the soil. "I'm not gonna - you have kits, right?"
The other cat's eyes narrowed, and her tail lashed. "I won't let you hurt them."
Mousestar stood up. "I would never! I'm a Clan cat; the code forbids the harming of kits. Not - Not that I would anyway. I - I - wanted to invite you to join? It's got to be tricky living on your own, and with kits and all this snow we've been having - the prey's hardly running and it'd be a lot easier with help. You don't have to stay after your kits are apprentices if you don't want to but we'd be proud to have you."
The tortoiseshell looked like she was going to say something, but was interrupted by a mewling from under the tractor, heralding the arrival of an undersized ginger kitten. "Mama? Did ya bring food? Beetle's reeeeallly hungry and -" The tiny tom kit puffed up as he noticed Mousestar "an intruder! I'll chase her off mama!"
The tortoiseshell sat down, sighing. "She's not an intruder, little fox. We're going to live with her. At least until the snow stops. Can you get your brother and sister out?" As the kit nodded and disappeared, she turned back to Mousestar. "My mother called me Newt, but I guess you'd want to add some suffix on the end, right? That's what clans do isn't it?"
Mousestar nodded. "I'm Mousestar. I'm Meadowclan's leader, so I'd be the one choosing your suffix. Probably -claw, for fighting skill, based off of what I've seen today, but you could have -flower, for great parents, or -fang, if you're excellent at both hunting and fighting. There are others too, for p
u like best?"
Newt's kits had crawled out from under the tractor, and one of them (maybe the tom that had shown up earlier, Mousestar wasn't sure) stood up and boxed the air. "Go with -claw mama! Newtclaw is the best name!"
"No! Newtflower!" The other ginger kit offered. "That's wayyy better!"
"I like Newtfang. That's so much cooler!" The third kit offered.
Newt blinked. "I'll think about it. We'd best get you somewhere warmer before it starts to snow again." She picked the smallest kit, the little grey one, up and nudged one of the ginger kits towards Mousestar.
The cats slunk their way back around the courtyard, grateful to the humans that cleared the snow each morning.

Newt and her kits settled in quickly, and a couple days later there were even more new arrivals to Meadowclan. Dawnflower's kitting went smoothly, and soon she was happily showing off the kits to the clan. Their little bodies wriggled as they nosed their way towards their mother's belly.
"They're so tiny. Do they have names yet?" Mousestar sat above the nest, on top of one of the straw bales. From here, she could keep an eye out for danger, but also talk easily with Dawnflower.
"Almost. This one I think is Daisy. Daisykit. This one I'm thinking Cloverkit." Dawnflower gently touched her tail tip to two of the kittens, hovering it over the third one. "I just don't know about her though. Birchkit maybe?"
"She's got a little too much white for that to suit. I don't know what'd fit, though. Smokewhisker, do you have any ideas for a name?" Mousestar turned to the approaching warrior.
"The other's are plants too, right? So you'd want something else. Go with Snowkit, or Sheepkit," Smokewhisker offered, gesturing with his tail to the animals that stood idly chewing nothing two fox-lengths from them.
Dawnflower looked conflicted. "Ohh, Sheepkit would be a great name. But I want them to match, so they'll always stay together. That's good for a clan, right? To have its members stay close?"
Smokewhisker flicked his tail noncommittally. "I guess. I just came over to tell Mousestar that Nettleleaf was going outside. Said something about seeing if any comfrey was left by the grain store. I was going to go with him, maybe catch a mouse or two. He says that no cat should be out in that weather by themselves, so it's your last chance to hunt too. Coming?"
"Comfrey! That's it! Little Comfreykit." Dawnflower licked the kit's head once. She yawned and joined her siblings in a pile in the nest. Dawnflower stood up carefully, nudging more hay around her kits to keep them warm. "If Newtclaw wants to bring her little ones closer, I can watch them while you three hunt. We need as much food as possible at the moment, so you should probably all get out there."
Mousestar nodded, and the two cats headed off to grab their clanmate.

one moon before...
“what do you expect me to do about meadowstar?" swandust asked, shifting uncomfortably, her stomach bulging over her paws.
"kill her, for all i care." stormfur replied, guilt free. he swiped his tongue over his muzzle. "or manipulate her. force her to commit an act that even starclan can't turn their ear to- so that i may kill what is left of her soul when she finds herself in the dark forest."
“tell me the story of your hatred," swandust demanded, flexing her claws uncomfortably into the mushy grass underneath her paws.
"i already did. she took everything from me," stormfur brushed off her demand with a flick of his tail.
"if she really did all those things, won't she already be coming to the dark forest?" the molly pointed out, her ears twitching (as if to make a statement of her irritation).
"petaldance, a lightningclan warrior, was the love of my life. the mollies in hollyclan were boring and practically gave themselves to whichever tom asked first. petaldance was the most beautiful molly i had ever seen, and she was a strong fighter. loyal to her clan, it took moons of chasing after her for her to agree to be my mate. but oakstar chased me out of hollyclan, and she insisted on following me, despite being pregnant. she caught whitecough, and i know she would have survived. i treated her sickness with catmint, but she refused to take it, fearing that it might harm the kits. she was young and gullible; herbs were meant to heal, not to hurt. but i couldn't convince her. jayseed died moments after he was born, but magnoliaseed fought. she weakened petaldance further by stealing her milk when my mate could hardly eat. she died, yet, i was left with a kit i did not want. i buried jayseed, hoping that when i came back, magnoliaseed would be dead so i could bury my family together. but she wasn't, so i abandoned her with a lightningclan warrior, telling kestrelflight that her only name was magnolia- that she was not worthy enough to be raised in a clan. but i watched my daughter grow. i watched her become similar in all ways to her mother, and my anger only grew when i learned that magnolia had cost the life of kestrelflight, as well. that kit was born of a plague and became one: death follows her wherever she goes. yet starclan made her a leader and gave her a new name- meadowstar."

one moon later...
honeytail waded out onto the bank of the beach and retrieved growing moss on a rock. he carried back as much as he could gather, the water tugging at his paws. he passed meadowstar and mulleinseed playing and a small smile crossed his face. bearspirit was also there, throwing a ball of sheep’s fur over mullein’s head and into meadowstar’s jaws, whilst the near-sprout extended up with all her height in an attempt to catch it. honeytail entered the nursery cave just as swandust had risen to her paws (rather shakily, and honeytail was certain that the queen couldn’t see her paws with her ginormous stomach) in preparation to leave the nursery. he blocked the exit and waved his tail pointedly, beckoning to the nest. “you could give birth any moment now, so you’re on strict bed rest.” he meowed after dropping the soaking moss near her muzzle. “here’s water,” the medicine cat glanced at applefur, who looked twice as big as swandust and four times as uncomfortable. she had been carrying her kittens for nearly a month longer than swandust- and she was very overdue. with no way to induce labor, honeytail fretted that they would lose the kittens. purring gently, he touched his muzzle to applefur’s ear.
“do you remember what i’ve told you?” honeytail inquired, his meow soft.
“the risks,” the grieving queen mumbled under her breath, her long tail elegantly wrapped around her stomach.
“not just for the kits. you could bleed out or go into shock. this is your first litter and its clear that your body wasn’t quite prepared for the transition, which i think is why you are overdue.” the ginger siamese pointed expressed, while swandust looked on.
“you must save my kits. promise me you will do everything you can to save them.” applefur pleaded, her eyes wide.
“of course. and to save you, applefur. don’t lose hope, or else the kits might too.”
the queen turned to swandust, her den-mate (they also happened to be carrying the same tom’s kits). “promise me, if i die, that you will nurse my kits.” after hesitately (and receiving a sharp glare from honeytail) swandust reluctantly nodded.
“as they were my own seeds,” she lied swiftly, though there was no cause for disbelief. swandust was an excellent liar, which is why she knew she could murder applefur without any suspicion rising. applefur would not threaten her reign; the king must be loyal, otherwise applefur had equal amount of claim to the throne as she did.

Brightfang died quietly. A rasp in the night slowly fading away to nothing. The clan was now purged of its sick. Those left behind now mourned. Tipnose didn't attend his funeral. She just wanted to be alone. And alone she was, for there was nothing left for her. Scorchpelt accompanied her and the two of them sat alone, looking out over the peaceful River. The River of Souls. So many had drank from it, swam in it, died in it, buried near it.
Tipnose sobbed, head buried in her friend's shoulder. "I want them back," she said quietly, ears pinned flat against her head. "But I can't. There's no one left."
"I'm here," murmured Scorchpelt, licking Tipnose's head comfortingly. "I'll be here for as long as you need."
The two sat there for some time, until the sky turned the brilliant purple-blue-orange-yellow of sunset, until the sky turned to darkness, until the stars twinkled in the sky. The leafbare night was cold, and the snows had already begun to fall, but neither cared. By the time the sun was high in the sky and the day's patrols had begun their routine, the two warriors had gone back home.

Gulltail sneezed. The scent of badger had been thick for the past few days but no one from Forestclan had caught a glimpse of the predator.
"Looks like it's gone into Gustclan territory," noted Swancloud, an intense expression on his face.
"Applenose said that if we need to tell them something, we could just linger at the border for a bit," said Cloudflower, pausing to look between Aspentail and Gulltail. "Maybe...one of us should stay here and the rest go get Applenose?"
Gulltail shared a look with Aspentail. "It's getting too cold for me," she murmured, "and I certainly can't stay out here and just wait."
"It's alright," he replied in the same quiet tone. "Barleystream and I'll stay here. You take the rest home to warn Applenose."
Gulltail nodded and flicked her tail. "C'mon Cloudflower, Swancloud. Let's take the news back home."

Honeystar gasped in pain and her eyes rotated to meet Dustleaf's eyes. "Are they coming?" she rasped.

The brown tabby tom started. "Uhh...yes. Yeah they are. Should I get a stick?"
Dustleaf dipped her head in a tiny nod. "Be quick." Her apprentice and fellow medicine cat turned and rushed out of the leader's den.
"I'm not going to make it, am I?" whispered Honeystar.
Dustleaf couldn't speak for a moment. "I...I don't know," she breathed. She sat down hard, numb. "I can't promise you one way or the other. You're old. On your last life. But you're relatively healthy."
Honeystar chuckled, a dark sound. "Applenose will make a good leader. And Aspentail will make a good father." She met Dustleaf's eyes. "Tell my kits the truth about me. Tell them about my mistakes. I know what many think of me, but I was never infallible. And you know that." If the two were humans, many a tear would have been shed in those moments. "Tell them...that I loved them. And that I know they'll make me proud. No matter what."

Brightfang died quietly. A rasp in the night slowly fading away to nothing. The clan was now purged of its sick. Those left behind now mourned. Tipnose didn't attend his funeral. She just wanted to be alone. And alone she was, for there was nothing left for her. Scorchpelt accompanied her and the two of them sat alone, looking out over the peaceful River. The River of Souls. So many had drank from it, swam in it, died in it, buried near it.
Tipnose sobbed, head buried in her friend's shoulder. "I want them back," she said quietly, ears pinned flat against her head. "But I can't. There's no one left."
"I'm here," murmured Scorchpelt, licking Tipnose's head comfortingly. "I'll be here for as long as you need."
The two sat there for some time, until the sky turned the brilliant purple-blue-orange-yellow of sunset, until the sky turned to darkness, until the stars twinkled in the sky. The leafbare night was cold, and the snows had already begun to fall, but neither cared. By the time the sun was high in the sky and the day's patrols had begun their routine, the two warriors had gone back home.

Gulltail sneezed. The scent of badger had been thick for the past few days but no one from Forestclan had caught a glimpse of the predator.
"Looks like it's gone into Gustclan territory," noted Swancloud, an intense expression on his face.
"Applenose said that if we need to tell them something, we could just linger at the border for a bit," said Cloudflower, pausing to look between Aspentail and Gulltail. "Maybe...one of us should stay here and the rest go get Applenose?"
Gulltail shared a look with Aspentail. "It's getting too cold for me," she murmured, "and I certainly can't stay out here and just wait."
"It's alright," he replied in the same quiet tone. "Barleystream and I'll stay here. You take the rest home to warn Applenose."
Gulltail nodded and flicked her tail. "C'mon Cloudflower, Swancloud. Let's take the news back home."
