For many generations the people of Ersstone have admired dragons. The beasts that rule skies and the forests, the mountains and the seas. Yes, these people admire them, but only very few choose to get closer to them. In this village there are many jobs and roles for the people to choose from. Like a lock smith, farmer, teacher. But there is one profession that is frowned upon. The dragon rider. Many want this job but few qualify, and those that do most likely will not come back from their final task.
There are only 5 known dragon riders that have successfully found their dragon and tamed them creating a life long bond between man and beast. These dragon riders are Aram, Udiel, J’trall, Bathshiba, and Zypher. They are off exploring new lands, adventuring, and learning more about their companions. Returning to their home, Ersstone every few years to record and tell their people of their findings.
The process starts at the age of 7. The villages young ones are gathered together by the villages high council and put into a summer camp like get-together that lasts for three days. The young ones are tested for certain traits and some abilities. Strength is always important, both physically and mentally. Next comes bravery, wit, and adventurousness. From there the council picks the young ones who show these qualities the most. After these children are put into a special school where they are trained and taught the ways of the dragon rider, survival skills, some magic, and dragonology. At the age of 18 the young would-be riders are given one last lesson before their final task. Each one must set out into the world by themselves and search for their dragon. The task is very hard and most do not return. No amount of training can truly prepare them for the dangers of the land and the beast they are looking for. But with determination and courage they will have a better chance at succeeding.
