Burningstar went to sllep in his den, and StarClan came to him. "What is it you want?" Burningstar asked.
They said,

"A ginger cat will send the message
of danger spreading through the Clans
Blood will spill
And the forest will fall to paws of darkness
But in the shadows
A bright light will gleam
And shine hope for the Clans yet."

Burningstar woke with a fright in his den. He realized, "It must be a prophecy!" he gasped.

"Wake up, Charkit, Gingerkit, I'm going to name you apprentices." Burningstar said.
They padded out into the camp and Burningstar sat on the Highledge. He let his sightless gaze rest on his kits.
"Charkit, you will be Charpaw. Unfortunatly, we have no warriors. So the next warrior joining will be your mentor. And Gingerpaw, we have no medicine cat but you will be the medicine apprentice."
"Yay" Gingerpaw said. Oakflower beamed with pride.

Burningstar opened his mouth to speak but then heard a sharp cry overhead. He jerked his head and caught sight of a massive bird. Shocked, he stumbled to the side and fell of the ledge with a soft thud.
Oakflower screamed and rushed to her mate's lifeless body. Charpaw looked up to see huge deadly taolons closing in around his body. He let out a long drawn-out wail as the hawk swept him off the ground and into the endless gray leaf-bare sky.
Oakflower, terrified, lied down next to her mate. Gingerpaw curled up beside her, burying her nose in the she-cat's soft fur.
When Gingerpaw awoke she was covered in frost, and she stretched and shook the snow out her fur. She shivered and, to get some warmth, cuddled up to Oakflower.
Her body was cold.
Tears welled in Gingerpaw's eyes. The stench of death was unmistakable. She hurried out of camp.
Her feet slid along the ice of the river outside the entrance. Suddenly she heard a loud crack and roaring water streamed through her fur. She tumbled into the rushing darkness and her vision faded.
She knew, horribly, that this was not the darkness of the water drowing her sight.
It was a different darkness.
The apprentice's body settled on the bottom among the rocks, sending up dust...
