Senses
After observing the "animals'" behavior, running scans, and conducting short experiments involving the critters' responses to different images and wavelengths of light, I have concluded that their multiple eyes are not all created equal. They may see the world somewhat like spiders in the sense that some eyes can track only movement or light and dark, while others see clearer color pictures. However, I believe their eyesight may be more sophisticated than that. I believe they may be able to see more colors than humans can, and they may even be able to see in infrared. I'm not sure how the glowing markings some of them sport might factor into the way they see the world and interact with each other yet, but it's certainly worth looking into in the future.

I have yet to test their sense of smell, but it would appear their hearing is excellent. This is unfortunate, as it is very difficult to sneak up on them when trying to get them back into their holding area. However, they are not very fast, especially when trying to find purchase on tile or linoleum with their little chicken feet, so that kind of makes up for it.

Seeing the success coolcutelily had in securing grant money, I decided to go for broke and try to replicate that success. I found my nicest suit and bought a briefcase from the thrift store and decided to target the largest company I knew of in the area: the local Walmart. I went in and asked to see their manager, and then asked the manager to see their manager, hoping that they would take me straight to the top where I could pitch an idea to them that would blow them away.
I was quickly kicked out of the Walmart.
However, a rancher coming in for his monthly grocery trip saw the fight with security outside, and afterwards came up to me to ask what the deal was. I explained that I had recently come across some strange animals I thought they could sell as pets or something, which he seemed very interested in, and when I told him that the "animals" in question would eat just about anything, he asked me if they would eat prairie dogs.
"Well...sure, maybe," I said.
"I'll take seven."

When I asked Third if there was anything that needed to be done around the lab, they told me to go to their storage unit at the edge of town to retrieve their extra glassware. Not exactly what I had hoped to be doing, but I suppose glassware is just as important to any experiment as the reagents, so I went. The place was a complete mess, and I'll admit I got distracted looking at some of the...oddities Third had among their stuff. There was at least one headless mannequin in there and several paintings of eyes. There was also a fake skeleton. At least, I hope it was fake. When I found the glassware, I also found a box of what looked like Halloween costumes. Some of the hats looked like they might fit the critters, and I thought it might be cute, so I brought that along too. So far we have not been able to get either Agnes or Jonathan into a sweater (and I got my hands pretty torn up for my trouble) but maybe someone else's beastie will tolerate being decorated.

For my research, I decided to focus on the portal itself. I couldn't get too close as it's taken up most of the spare bedroom it appeared in, but I was able to check the sensors and record some observations. This got boring after about 15 minutes. Truthfully, the portal doesn't do much. It just hums mostly, and sometimes it'll hum a little louder, but nothing really happens when it does that. I thought a portal to another dimension would be more exciting. While I watched the sensors and waited for something exciting to record, I started doodling on a piece of scratch paper. I didn't really care for what I ended up drawing, so I crumpled the paper up. And then I got a stupid idea. I threw the paper into the portal. The sensors went bananas for a few seconds, and the portal started humming and screeching. Then it was back to normal. Mostly. Now the readings on the sensors are a little different. I also think I may have gotten some radiation poisoning. So that's awesome.

In summary:

I would, of course, supply the grants for such an experiment in return for one specimen of my own from the mix.
