242...it's a number that holds a great deal of significance. It's the smallest integer to start a run of four consecutive integers with the same number of divisors, it’s a nontotient, a palindrome, and also the area code of what use to be the Bahamas. 242 is also a loose count of the number of dates that the world was supposed to end. Unfortunately since it was human kind that tried to search for the date their Earth would cease to exist all 242 of these dates were shamefully incorrect. Even so, I cannot speak too harshly of the unique and oddly advanced life forms that use to roam this here Earth; they were at least intelligent enough to understand that their planet was neither everlasting nor invincible. Intelligence, though, is quite a vague term to be used on any homo sapiens seeing as they connected the end of the world with fabricated stories of apocalypses and fiery meteor showers. In fact the end of the earth was much more poetic than flaming balls of rock crashing into the earth’s surface; the same massive sphere of plasma and magnetic fields that had devoted most of its life to providing the means of survival to its insignificant daughter betrayed all living kind the day that it started its expansion into a Red Giant; engulfing the lesser planets and reaching out it’s long, blazing fingers to Earth. Almost all living species were wiped out by the suns brutal rampage. Almost, all… A very few lucky creatures survived in this new planet of dust, darkness, and sand. Over the course of the next two hundred years the remaining animals breed and with each new set of offspring there were minute changes. Suddenly, thought, without warning the fish population vanished from the surface of the world but reappeared only a century later with new characteristics. This new type of fish was bigger, with sharper teeth and a bonier structure. They still had gills and scales but their scales where thicker and came in different shades of violet and silver and it was soon discovered that this new type of water vertebrate, given the name Sillacux, fed off of anything whether it be underwater plants, algae, land or air animals that get too close to the dark waves, or even their of kind. Not long after that the bird, elk, and rabbit species went through the same changes. The birds, now called Freal, all gained a uniformed bulky build, minute jagged teeth on the inside of their beaks, and white and crimson markings. Fuana, or what used to be the rabbit population, were seen with longer legs and quicker reactions, almost taking on the appearance and behavior of long-furred greyhounds with the typical long ears of a rabbit and chocolate and jade colored markings. Imeir, the new species of elk, were the least like their relatives; they were omnivores with sharp teeth, more distinct cloven hooves, and shaggier black coats with distinct orange markings dappling or striping their flanks. The wolf populace was the last to have noticeable changes in their appearance; they became slightly larger with thicker pelts that ranged from black to white and almost every wolf had markings in a shade of blue, silver or white. Not only this but some of these “new” wolves had unique and unexplainable powers—some had a heightened sense of hearing or vision while others could get glimpses of the future or even slightly control an element. With an enhanced intelligence and an enhanced desire to survive the old packs were merged to create the Sulpearis Pack of the south and the Arictas Pack of the east. The few defiant individuals who remained in the south and west were categorized as martyrs and completely out casted. Of course it is this world in which our main character was born in along with her fearless companions; the year was 10515 and it was snowing...
