Prologue
I was born in London sixteen years ago, on a cold May morning. From that day, I was different to everybody else who I met.
I was born a shapeshifter.
My parents were shapeshifters too, but had made a pretty good job of blending in with the others, since they wanted to be human. However, I didn't. I loved being unique, and would constantly change forms. Depending on what mood I was, I could change into a bird, and fly across the skies, or I could be a cat, and prowl around the streets.
When I was four years old, I was sent to school. Instantly I had to change, and to try and fit in with everybody else.
"Remember, Sam." my parents had said, "You mustn't change forms, or you'll be in trouble." I simply nodded along, my golden hair tied up in pigtails, worried about what this trouble could mean. Of course, I couldn't imagine, since I was young and naive, with only a simple outlook of life.
All the other children were different from me. Mainly, they were human, but they had much stricter boundaries than me. I was allowed to wander around, but they had to stay indoors. This made me hard to fit in. Everybody suspected me as a spoilt child, since of my surprise to how different we were. From then on, I was an outsider, constantly wanted to belong, although I couldn't.
Then one day, this all changed. I was sitting alone, trying to make sense of why people would want to play families. I heard somebody come and sit besides me.
"Why don't you join in with everybody else?" they asked. It was a boy, who was in my class. He too was different from everybody else, and was the adventurous type.
"What they do just doesn't make sense. Why would you play those games?" I replied.
"That's what I think." they muttered. "I'm Miles, by the way."
"I'm Sam." From that moment on, we became close friends, and would spend our time talking to each other. It was just us two, throughout Primary school, and then we went to the High School and met Dylan and Sonnet, who went to a different school. We then became a foursome.
Fast forward five years, and here I am now.
And this is when we begin...
