Life isn’t all that happy these days,
Night after night, it’s all the same.
Momma and Pa fight ‘till dark,
The smell of booze stained to the floor,
Makes my stomach churn ever more.
‘Till I ask for supper.
Momma shouts “disgrace!”
Pa shouts “Be gone!”
Then I climb to the attic floor, and wait.
Wait. Wait.
Then came through the cracked wood,
Was him.
Sleek as silk, and eyes so fierce,
Stood Red Bird.
As these lonely days come to a close,
I lay in my “bed” sorrowing all sleepless night, ‘til Red Bird sings me a lullaby so sweet.
As my eyes relax, I think to myself,
Oh Red Bird, Oh Red Bird,
You’re the only one, stay with me, Red Bird, ‘til I can dream again.
Oh Red Bird, Oh Red Bird.
I whisper in thought.
‘Till sleep drowns out my hunger,
And the screams downstairs fade.
Oh Red Bird, oh Red Bird.
