constantine sighed, head in his hands. the gray walls of the small corral felt like they were closing in, the faded silver bars looming like overcast clouds. his ears were pinned back, his nose twitching with embarrassment. it was empty, and the silence stretched for miles, an empty wasteland with no end in sight. it wasn't so much the fact he was in jail, but the fact that maddox would be here soon. he always is. as if calling upon the devil, the worried and angry blue furred kalon shoved open the heavy door. his eyes softened at the sight of his father, a pitiful sight as he sat, legs crossed, in a sad circle on the small cot. constantine's ears rose, but as he looked up, his tail drooping in embarrassment as he looked away from his son.
" dad. "
" ..
" yea? "
" seriously? "
constantine blushed.
" yea. "
maddox sighed, and gave a tiny smile, barely noticeable. he walked out of the room, tail swishing behind him with a tad less droopy than before. he walked back in with an officer, jingling his keys with a smirk. after unlocking the door, maddox gave his father a small glare. constantine gave a shy smile, tail twisting.
as they walked home, constantine broke the silence.
" you.. you like jazz? "
maddox burst into laughing, but quickly recovered with a forced frown. amusement flickered in his eyes as they trudged to the corner of the block, slippery with ice.
" that's the last time I'm getting you out of there. you really need to stop arguing with that police kal down the street. "
constantine gave a smirk of disapproval.
" he's so obnoxious though. he really needs to be put in his place. "
maddox smiled, eyes softening and he gave a small chuckle.
" he sure does. you really gotta keep to yourself though! as much as he deserves it, you can't go around peeing on the presidents lawn if you know what I mean. "
constantine laughed, hopping to the snowy stairs of their house. with a click they both entered, kicking the door shut with their tails as they neared the kitchen.
" I'm famished. you would think they would have some prison chili or cool-aid or something. "
maddox smiled as he swung open the pantry, grabbing the frosted flakes and shaking them to a beat while constantine hit the counter with two spoons and two bowls. he slid the bowls across the countertop just as maddox shook the flakes into the bowls.
constantine grinned and handed maddox his spoon, and they both grabbed their cereal and plopped down onto the couch. although there was stuffing coming out of the corner of a tear on the side, the old thing was oddly comfortable.
the golden light sifted through the worn and broken curtains, shimmering off the two lumps of kalons on the couch, curled up as one. their fur gave small glimmers, it hadn't been washed properly in about a week. constantine's eyes opened first, staring as dark slits and growing into large, glossy moons. he didn't lift his head from maddox, and a large, tired smile spread from ear to ear as he nestled in maddox's now stiff body.
constantine didn't notice, but maddox was now awake, smiling slightly at his father as he slept in his fur.
they both woke at probably around noon, their stomachs firing alarms to awaken them. they grabbed cereal, but not with the same enthusiasm as last night.
maddox's ears shot up.
" shoot! "
he ran around frantically, gathering heavy gear and his snowboard.
" I.. I forgot about this morning! I was going to snowboard! crap, shoot, argh! "
constantine had seemed this about fifty times, so he sat in a heap on the couch, one arm hanging off while the other continuously fed his mouth frosted flakes.
maddox ran over, gave constantine a small peck on the cheek, and ran out the door.
