Part 15
Mystic woke early the next morning in a panic. She had been having nightmares again, about her people leaving her. She sat up and looked around the cave. It was still dark outside, which meant it was before dawn, but she knew there was no way she was going back to sleep. She stood up and stretched, wincing as she flexed her sore muscles. They weren’t as sore as she thought they would be, so she was happy. She padded quietly out of the cave and headed for the river to get a drink. About halfway to the river she heard something behind her. She spun around and crouched low, ready to pounce and fight if she needed to. She heard a soft chuckle and saw his bright blue eyes before she could make out the rest of him in the dark.
“Relax City Girl, I’m not going to attack you.”
Great, she thought to herself, just what I need this early in the morning, him. She turned back to face the river and continued towards it without speaking to him. She heard him following her but didn’t care until he was right next to her, laughing again. God that sound was annoying.
“What is your problem City Girl? I make you work hard, like everyone else, and you refuse to speak to me?”
She spun to face him, her pale blue eyes meeting his bright ones with an intensity that made him take a step back. She noticed and stepped towards him, but he stood his ground. She snarled, inches from his face,
“Its not the hard work that makes me hate you Black, it’s the fact that you are arrogant and mean. You treat people like they are beneath you, and that bothers me. What makes you so special, so much better than everyone else that you have the right to treat everyone the way you do? You talk about this pack as being a family and having to take everyone else into consideration before yourself. Well what about their feelings? Or does that not count? Wait, let me guess, I don’t understand because I’m just a City Girl, right?”
The anger in her eyes and her voice shocked him. It also amused him, and irritated him a little bit. He tilted his head to the side and looked at her for a minute before responding.
“Have you ever considered that I am the way I am for a reason? That I have fought with and watched some of my friends die before this pack was as big and as strong as it is? That maybe I distance myself from most pack members so that I can teach them to fight and defend themselves without worrying that I have hurt their feelings? Because that is my job. I teach fighting for a reason. It is what keeps the pack safe. Do you really think I could do that if I was warm and fuzzy with everyone? But you’re right, you wouldn’t understand that. Not because you are a City Girl, but because you haven’t lived it, and I hope you never have to. Don’t use your City Girl status as an excuse. Most of us come from the same place, even me, so it won’t work around here.”
He growled as he said the last part, then spun away from her and was gone. It was so dark she couldn’t see where he went and made no move to follow him. She was too shocked by what he had said to even consider it. She sat down where she was and thought about what he had said. She had never even considered that being his side of it. The more she thought about it, the more his actions and attitude started to make sense. He couldn’t effectively teach others to fight and defend themselves if he were close to all of them. And having to watch his friends die…no wonder he was so passionate about making decisions that effected the pack as a whole. The more she thought about it the more she regretted calling him arrogant and mean. She also thought about his last statement, about all of them coming from the same place, even him. Had Black been a Designer dog? He certainly didn’t look or act like one, but maybe….
She shook her head and stood up, continuing towards the river feeling worse than she had when she woke up. She was hoping to find Black there so she could apologize, but she wasn’t surprised when he wasn’t there. She drank her fill and stood in the cool water for a while, letting it soothe her tired feed. She was lost in her own thoughts and the sound of the water until she noticed the first light of dawn making the horizon gray. She walked out of the river and started trotting back towards the cave. When she got there Diesel was sitting outside.
“Good Morning.” He called quietly, softly wagging his tail.
“Good morning, why are you here so early?”
“Black sent me to let you know that you have the day off, we all do actually.”
Mystic’s tail and ears drooped. She knew the day off was her fault. She had upset Black and she had been hoping to be able to apologize, but now it looked like he didn’t want to see her at all. Not that she blamed him.
“Hey, what’s the matter?” Diesel asked quietly. Mystic sighed.
“Nothing….everything. I can never do anything right.”
“Oh come on, that’s not true. What happened?”
“I met up with Black today on my way to the river. I said…things that I shouldn’t have and now he’s mad at me.”
Diesel laughed softly
“Its about time someone came along and said things to Black that shouldn’t be said. Look, his story isn’t mine to tell, and he has his own reasons for acting the way he does, but…trust me…he needs someone to keep him in line. Whatever you said, I’m sure it wasn’t as bad as it seems. He’ll get over it.”
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome. So…since we have the day off…I was wondering if you wanted to…hang out? You haven’t seen everything around here yet…I could…show you around if you want. I mean, unless you have something else to do…”
Mystic smiled at how he stumbled over his words. He was always so nice to her.
“That sounds like fun, but we should probably wait until everyone is awake before we go wandering around?”
Diesel grinned and wagged his tail.
“We should, but I have somewhere we can go until then without waking anyone up. Come on.”
He enthusiastically bounded away from the cave and a fast paced trot. Mystic shook her head and laughed and she sprinted to catch up with him.
