Jack was born at an old and historic Euphorian racehorse farm. The farm had a reputation of breeding great champions, and many of their most prestigious equines would return to the property to be laid to rest after they had passed on. It was a quaint farm, sprawling over acres of rolling green hills. The dated red barns had a rustic charm, and everyone felt right at home.
Soon after Jack was born, some strange occurrences began happening on a nightly basis; things that couldn’t be explained. Horses would end up in the wrong stalls overnight, and the farm hands would enter the barns in the mornings confused as to how it was happening. They began to double check their every move, and knew that they were putting the horses in the correct places when they were closing up for the evening. None of the doors seemed broken, so it seemed odd that this was happening.
Horse began spooking with much more frequency. Normally docile and level headed horses would suddenly left their heads straight up in the air, eyes wide, and all would stare into the same corner of the barn. Some would just freeze up like this, while others would take off tearing as far away from the barn as they could. These are just a couple of the creepy occurrences that plagued this history-rich racing facility.
This was the oldest of the barns on the property. It was smaller, and had not fit the size requirements of the large horse breeding and racing operation for decades. It had been converted into a brood mare barn, as it was smaller and much quieter, a perfect location for mares to have their foals comfortably. The barn also housed a couple of non-race horses that were used for a mounted patrol of the property. One of the mounted patrol riders happened to hunt ghosts as a hobby, and took it upon herself to run a full investigation of the barn her horse and the broodmares were housed in.
As her paranormal investigation began, her draft cross chestnut gelding named Captain became highly intrigued with her work. Although Captain wasn’t a racehorse, little foal Jack really looked up to him. Jack was the only colt so far in a foaling season that brought an unusually high number of fillies, so he liked going to Captain to hang out and play. Captain would often tell Jack in the mornings the findings that he and his human had found the night before. Jack always listened with wide eyes, always a little scared but more interested in the paranormal than anything else.
“Captain, I love hearing all your ghost stories, but can one night you and I go ghost hunting instead of you and your human?!” The bulky chestnut chuckled heartily, and smiled down at the tiny colt. “Well, I don’t see why not. Let me see what I can do.”
Captain waited until a Friday night to carry out his plan. He knew his human did not come on the weekends to do her paranormal investigations, so that would give him and Jack some time to have an adventure of their own. When his human came with all of her equipment, Jack was sure to be sneaky as he swiped one piece of technology without her knowing. He quickly hid it underneath his pile of hay and watched her confusion as she searched for the missing piece of equipment. “Huh, I could’ve swore I had that. Must still be at home, I guess” she mumbled to herself, shrugging in confusion. Captain was glad his human was so laid back, and didn’t take the time to search around for his stolen treasure.

The following evening, Jack excitedly pranced over to Captain’s stall to see what was in store. “Alright little one, now that that sun’s gone down, we can start our own investigation” said Captain as he rummaged around in his hay. After a bit of searching, he dug up the piece of equipment he had swiped the night before. “See this right here, Jack? My human says it’s an EMF. She told me it measures electrical currents in our surroundings, and she says that high readings in the meter indicate a ghost is present. Ya got that?” Jack nodded his head, grinning from ear to ear. Captain wiggles his lips over the tool and eventually heard it buzz on. “Alright, let’s go find some ghosts Jack.” The chestnut draft picked up the EMF device in his mouth and lead the way out of the stall, Jack trotting alongside him.
The two buddies made their way around the barn, Captain knowing exactly where the hot spots in the barn were from his time spent with his human. He wandered around with Jack, leaving these areas for last, to let the suspense build up and have it be more exciting for the little colt. When he could tell Jack was getting flustered from a lack of interesting findings, he led him over to the corner of the barn. In this corner was the stall of a great mare who had foaled many champions for the farm, and who had been a great racehorse in her own right. It was only recently that she had passed away, and she was one of the lucky greats to have been buried on the property. It only made sense that this was where the ghost seemed most active.
As the pair approached the corner, the EMF device began lighting up, indicating a large amount of electrical energy was now present. Jack jumped back, but strutted back up beside Captain to prove he was in fact big and brave enough. As the two creeped closer, they began to see a horse shrouded in a white mist. ”Captain? Who is that?” Jack squeaked. “That my boy, is a genuine ghost. I’ve seen quite a few in my days exploring with my human, but we haven’t seen this one yet.”
The apparition inched it’s way closer to the two boys, but neither budged. Captain was not afraid, and could tell that this was a friendly ghost. Jack’s ears flicked, and he shook his head. He thought he could hear someone whispering in his ear. ”Captain! Did you hear that?!” The older horse shook his head no. The younger colt must have more sensitive hearing than the aged gelding. He could hear the ghost speaking to him.
”No need for worry child...” the disembodied voice whispered softly to the foal. “I have no intention to do any harm. I just love playing tricks on the humans here, I loved to play with them when I was here, and I don’t want that to end now that I’m gone.”
“Don’t you worry, I will watch over and protect this barn. You’ll be safe as long as you’re here with me.” Jack smiled at the ghost, and he attempted to nuzzle up against her, forgetting that she was not physically there. As he made contact with her, the apparition disappeared.

It had been a number of years since he had lived on that farm, and even longer since his ghost hunt with Captain, but that was a night that Jack will never forget. He had become fascinated with the paranormal realm. From time to time, he could still hear ghosts speak to him if he listened hard enough. He was not afraid of them, all because of the apparition of the sweet mare that kindly looked after his herd. When other horses spooked, he saw an opportunity for an adventure, and maybe even a new, other worldly friend.
