The Alder Tree [March 18th -- April 14th]
The Alder tree is associated with courage, balance, and the evolving spirit. In Irish folklore, it was believed the first male was created from an Alder tree [female from Rowan]. The branches were once used to measure graves, and thus the trees are connected with death, but also rebirth. The animals symbols associated with this tree are the fox and the raven. When cut, the trees "bleed" a red sap, and so the color and gemstone for this zodiac is a red and the ruby.

How had everything gone so wrong? Why had this happened? Why
did he always have to lose? Baldur’s mind clouded over rapidly as
his search became more desperate. He wasn’t injured from the battle,
but that didn’t get rid of the sheer destruction around him. But the
scale of the battle didn’t matter right now, there was only one thing
in his mind. Emrys. As long as Emrys was fine then the battle would’ve
been worth it. If only that was the case.

The clouds that once drenched the battlefield in rain descended
to cover the earth, every step sinking into the red-stained earth
beneath it. It looked like it had come straight out of a horror story,
and somehow it was worse. Baldur crouched down next to a fallen
body, his knees shaking. Marked by his light brown hair and shattered
bow staff. This marked the corpse of his lover, a fractured body that
no longer housed the spirit of Emrys. Newfound emptiness overwhelmed
him, forcing a grief-stricken scream to tear out of his already hoarse
throat. This was what grief was.

As the days passed he’d forgotten the difference between the feeling
of rain on his face and tears. It was like there was something missing
inside of him, something he’d lost. Something he could have stopped,
but didn’t. He’d buried Emrys in an unmarked grave but in a grave of
his own rather than letting the earth take back what it had given. The
fact that the war ended in a matter of months had little effect on his
state of mind, which had decided that the potential of recovery wasn’t
worth living in a world lacking the thing he loved. Hells, he was a warrior.
He wasn’t supposed to get attached. Maybe it was just that he couldn’t
help but get attached.

Baldur had managed to survive the heartache and pain that had plagued
him for years now. Perhaps it was driving him mad. It was as though there
was a chest following him, a faint wisp of light he could see out of the
corner of his eye. Always trying to wander closer, but never enough to
touch. He was driven to the breaking point when it did finally approach,
a silhouette of the person he’d come to miss the most reading out at him.
He didn’t hesitate. In an instant, he was extending his own hand, a
desperate attempt to hold Emrys once again, maybe a way to finally
say goodbye, but the hand vanished, fading away into nothing as the
sparked dimmed and returned to the void that hides within all shadows.

In search of answers, Baldur left the rural hut he’d grown accustomed to,
venturing off in search of a seer meant to guide him towards a cure to his
disease. Her home was simple, like his. The entire building looked like it
was being swallowed by plant growth, but the sage still seemed to reside
there in meditation. When she awoke she spoke, Her voice sounding as
old as the forest itself, and she told him of a shrine in the mountains. There
he would find Evangelion, the god of growth and rebirth. This god would
cure him of his sorrow but at a price. Baldur didn’t wait, thanking her for
the help she’d given, leaving her candlelit existence.

The mountain itself was steep, sheer cliffs providing a spectacular view that
could lead to his own death. Deer and birds followed him across the slopes,
lacking the knowledge about his kind to show any emotions other than curiosity.
They fell off his trail one by one until only the ravens were left to guide him
to a desolate temple. It was made of a cool grey stone, worn down and
cracked by time as vines tore through the pillars and sought to reclaim more
of their slopes. With steady knees, Baldur knelt down, placing two raven feathers
at its base, two parallel to each other. As he began to chant the birds around him
started to sing, their voices croaking above the whispers of the wind as they
clumped together before him. Then they took shape, no longer appearing as
individual birds, but rather as one whole figure. Once whole, Evangelion looked
down at Baldur, patiently waiting for the sacrifice.
