When Beetlewhisper was still a medicine cat, a mountain lion had invaded the camp. He taunted and led the cat away from the camp with the help of Dewstar. The mountain lion pinned him down and tried to claw his throat but only got his ears. Dewstar had gotten the mountain lion off, and with the help of Beetlewhisper and everyone else, they chased it off. The scars are a constant reminder of that battle.
