Hot. Hot, dry, and windy - that was all that Oliwier knew. It was what they were born into, what they lived in for three years of their life. Ollie was born in the summer, when the ground was white and blinding, water was low, and it was every band for themselves. They were lucky to be born into an established band, one of feral tolters who had found each other in the basin.
Ollie’s dam was thin but hardy, Ollie being one of three foals from her. They were the oldest, the firstborn, and Ollie’s sire was the band stallion. And so Ollie lived a simple but normal life in the basin, constantly moving and fending off bachelor stallions.
Ollie, of course, was not born as Ollie. They were born under another simpler name, one not also a human name. Anytime someone asks of their birth name, Ollie shakes their head and smiles, politely turning down their question.
When Ollie was two, their sire chased them out of the herd. Being neither a stallion or a mare, Ollie wasn’t a threat - but they also had no use in the herd. They were saddened, but understood.
They were also terrified. Ollie had never been alone by themselves before, and now that they were out in the open, wandering from wash to wash, panic drove their heart into their throat. Ollie was a small horse, a mere 13.2 hands, and had never before associated with normal mustangs. Every now and then they were approached by bachelors, by small bands of three or four horses, but there was never an invitation to join a band or travel with a bachelor as a pair. They knew why - they weren’t good for anything. They weren’t a stallion, they couldn’t lead and compete for mares, and they weren’t a mare either - they couldn’t have foals.
Ollie wandered the basin for another year, surviving off the land like they had been raised, trailing other bands in search of grazing spots and water. When they were three, nearing four, they got caught in a roundup and were taken to a BLM holding facility. They were auctioned off to Cobalt Sky as a wild four year old, distrustful of both humans and other tolters at first.
With time and gentleness and willpower and patience, Ollie was eventually won over by their new owners. They were halter trained, socialized with other tolters, and even formed a small herd of their own.
Being around humans had its perks, Ollie supposed. Food and water readily available, a warm stall to come back to at night, always someone ready to listen and understand. And oh, the grooming - Ollie loved being brushed out, clipped, kept pristinely. They learned new smells, new sensations, new feelings, and learned to love again. Ollie relearned what it meant to have a herd, then a family and friends again. Ollie, slowly, learned how to love themselves again.
favorites ;; drizzling rain, clear night skies, cuddly animals, snow on the mountaintops, watching old movies, plushies, the smell of lavender, softly listening to music, oversized sweaters, salted caramels, sunlight through the curtains, potted plants, the scent of cookies fresh out of the oven, apricot preserves on horse cookies, wildflowers in the pasture, acoustic guitars
either or ;; cats or dogs || mountains or beach || strawberry or blueberry || peanut butter or jelly || wool or cotton || jumping or flatwork || coffee or tea || writing or drawing || sweet or savory || breakfast or dinner || early mornings or late nights || sun or moon|| vintage or modern || painting or sketching ||

They just... appeared one day. Wandering wild, yet not a single twig or bit of dirt blemishing their pristine coat, mane, or tail. Their eyes seemed to glow in the darkness. Touch was tolerated. They never fled from the humans who found them, but never permitted tacking or taming either. Containment proved to be impossible. No stall could hold them, no pasture, not matter how large. They had to be left out. At times, they would vanish without a trace. Gone for days, maybe weeks, only to reappear in the same part of the property. What they are is still a mystery. Something otherworldly, taking the form of a beautiful horse. They are not a mare. Not a stallion. Not a gelding. There is something unnerving about their gaze. Touch is only consistently permitted on the head, with occasional exceptions for touches along the back, feet, and upper rump. When interaction is initiated, it is brief. They don't seem to eat or drink, at least not in the company of any other living being. The other horses avoid them, preferring to stay several meters away at all times. This doesn't faze the... thing, despite the clear rejection. They do not seek companionship with any. Herd dynamics mean nothing. Very few of the normal equine behaviors apply to them, and yet they still keep their form. An air of sorrow surrounds them, infecting those who get close enough with an inexplicable feeling of grief. At times, it is like there are tears tricking down their face. Despite this, there is also an air of peace. Their expression never wavers from an almost mona-lisa esque visage. But something is hidden. Something unknown.

*Not star shaped, just scattered around like stars, maybe with a constellation hidden in there?
