Taming Entry;
Tuesday was a pretty bad day.
I'd learned from various connections that my favorite war mare, whom I'd sold to a nice farmer in hopes that she'd go to a safe home, had passed through many farms into the hands of a reckless young warrior who'd probably leave her stable door open and let her escape. Ink had become incredibly skittish, too, and was not progressing well in his training. To top it all off, my dragon hunts had been wildly unsuccessful. After a frightening encounter with a wild changewing, I finally purchased a shield, sword, and a long whip in hopes of defending myself, losing out on quite a bit of money in the process.
It was no surprise that I was in a very bad mood, as evidenced my my stiff gait and glaring eyes. One glance probably struck fear into the heart of the strongest vikings, hence the reason I left to go walk off some steam. It was for the better, anyway; I was equipped with some dinner and my weapons, so I'd probably return home in one piece.
The flapping of wings above me was all too familiar, and I'd practically become desensitized. I didn't even turn around when I felt a soft thud behind me. Clearly something was trying to sneak up on me, probably a reckless terrible terror that just might lose his head if he made a grab for my backpack.
A growl. If it had been any other day, I would have cowered and run, but blinding fury and pride overrode my self-preservation instincts. Whatever it was, frightening or not, it wasn't going to intimidate me. Not today. If it wanted to eat me, fine. I wasn't going to let it have the satisfaction of seeing me afraid, though.
See how stupid I am when I get angry?
Suddenly, a burst of heat slammed me in the back like a freight train. In a frenzy of confusion and surprise I whipped around, and there it stood; a monstrous nightmare, snarling and quite literally aflame. A lot of options ran through my mind: I could turn and run, I could back away, I could put up my shield, I could drop my weapons...
Of all the things I could have chosen, I chose arguably the dumbest one I could have. Dropping my shield and spear, I pulled out the brand new riding whip and waved it threateningly right at its nose.
"Quit! You mongrel!" I shouted, followed by a rather lengthy string of swears I was rather proud of at the time. The beast, probably genuinely surprised at my stunning idiocy, extinguished itself and cocked its head curiously. 'Dinner and a show,' it was probably thinking.
I waved my arms in its face, whip swinging up into its face. "Back," I snarled, and what choice did the beast have? Reluctantly, it took a few steps backward, no longer looking so cocky. Much like any other animal, controlling these beasts' movement often caused them to rethink their strategies a bit. This creature still seemed insubordinate though; it shot a few blasts of flame at my feet before backing up to await my next move.
"I'm going to have to catch you now. You realize that, right?" I asked it dully. Then, realizing I was talking to this apparently brainless reptile, I rolled my eyes, dug around in my backpack, and held out the slab of meat I carried for occasions like these. The creature took it, chewed it, and, to my shock, spit the bones back - right into my eyes!
I can't repeat the words I yelled in return for fear of being imprisoned, but in the end the creature begrudgingly returned home with me after being bribed with meat that I'd picked the bones out of. After discovering it to be a female, I named her Luna. Not as in moon, as in lunatic. She still shoots fire at me and ignites herself today, two days later, in hopes of scaring me off. She terrorizes poor Ink, too, to the point that I wonder if I should have brought her home at all. She is not a fan of the whip, though; hopefully she'll keep herself in check until I can find glue strong enough to hold her piteous mouth shut.
