The rain pattered softly outside his porch, passed the wood framing and screen that protected him from the weather. The wind that blew in from the lake was chilly, something abnormal for a wild Floridian summer. He took a deep breath, enjoying the smell of wet earth and oil paints. The male Kalon stared out wistfully at the downpour, deep blue eyes searching the foggy surface there. His tail flicked softly and he sighted, turning back to his canvas. Alone in his cabin, he looked longingly at each brush stroke as it slid across his canvas, mouth turning up into the gentlest of smiles. Seemingly random brush strokes slowly took shape as another Kalon came to life, staring at the lake on the shore. In his painting, it was a beautiful sunny day, perfect for boating, but just across the lake he'd painted the trailing ends of a storm retreating back across the water. Quickly he began to mix new paint, muse taking off in a brilliant display of creativity; a second Kalon was brought to life, and then a third, much smaller form. These two were coming from the lake, back up to him, and the sigh he gave was one of sadness. He gave up on the painting then, and turned to go back inside.

For weeks he stared at the painting, wishing, hoping, but he never picked the brush back up.

One morning he stood out on his porch, watching the deer graze in the dawn light when the door opened behind him, and it briefly caused him to panic before he heard a tiny voice yell "daddy", and he almost collapsed into tears. He quickly turned to embrace his child, kissing the young Kalon's head before turning to his much larger mate. Asher cried for hours, apologizing and begging forgiveness, happy that they'd come back to him. They talked and talked, long after their little one had gone to bed. They agreed to brave the storm together, that they'd anchor down even stronger than before. That night the rain finally stopped, and they fell asleep in each other's arms. The next morning Asher woke alone to the noon time sun, but he could hear his mate and kit playing by the lake. On the porch, he finally picked the brush back up, and extending over the lake, he painted a rainbow. A promise for the future.

Life used to feel distant. Like an icy leaf encased in a glass box; so fragile. The mind of a Kalon had a capacity, and each day was an endless drag to try and not fill it to the brim.
Tansy’s only escape was her music.
The notes stacked up in her head like playing cards. When she felt low, her music was high and cheerful, like a bird chirping in the morning. When she knew her happiness was too good to be true, her music was low and sultry.
Even with her new escape, she wasn’t peaceful.
Reality was tough on Tansy. It was hard to balance her music with her work, and her soul with her mind. Her whole body was on different pages. Some days, her emotions would escalate and she’d break down. And other days, her mood would be so low. Nothing could drag her out of these bursts of feelings. Not even her music.
But the right combination of things can be magical.
Little by little, Tansy would create real songs.
Positive feedback encouraged her to believe more in herself, while criticism encouraged her to change her music and make it better.
Of course, life isn’t cupcakes and rainbows.
Tansy manages to keep her cool. She’s so much happier with herself and her life. But her memories will always be with her.
And even if they won’t, nobody’s perfect.
