Ebey was born to pull, born to breathe in that fresh mountain air, born to save any and all life. In fact that’s why her parents even had her litter, to release more heroes into such a cruel world. Yes, it had major stakes and can be considered such a lump some dream to pawn a wee pup. But for Ebey, it made her look forward to the age of where she could join the National Parks Service K9 first responders team. In fact that’s why she was named after the Washington parks.
Ebey had aged like fine wine with her handler exceeding nearly every test to make her the dog she was born to be. Yet when she was ready to walk her graduation stage, a tragedy had occurred. Ebey had been career changed and her handler that had trained her from puppy hood, was never notified until now. Ebey had failed her last test, the most important test of them all detecting live human scents. All because Ebey had a mild allergic reaction to the pollen flittering in the air.
Crest fallen, handler and prized husky returned home. All of Ebey’s littermates had been turned over to new handlers each slowly becoming the heroes they were meant to be. But the handler was lost on what to do with Ebey so they donated her to the National Parks anyways. The parks was grateful to have her anyways, they placed her in one of their most readily visited museum. Ebey was now a greeter, getting the gentlest of pats from hopeful hikers and friendly strangers wanting to learn about the gold rush.
Maybe the career change was in fact the best for little Ebey.
