Competition: The mare was half asleep in the early morning light, twitching in her state of refusal to wake up. She had been trying to gain the trust of the pretty maine coon that came around often, listening to her little mews of hello; though she never came too close to the tall mare.
Tiredly, Nermal, who was named by her first handler's child, spun a few times before lying down in her bedding; hay and shavings puffing up. She laid there comfortably for about five minutes before she saw a familiar face standing on her stall door; there was a little platform that Francesca had put in so she could put her brushes and phone down on it, and the maine coon seemed to appreciate the free seat that was too high for the dogs to bother her. Nermal watched as she cleaned herself before they both fell into a short staring match. One of the other mares had woken up and banged on their stall door angrily, hungry for an early breakfast. The cat flinched and jumped down into the stall with Nermal.
She was a large queen, light tan undercoat clashed with her black stripes; she had a small white stripe on her nose that traveled up between her eyes and onto her forehead, and the cream coloured fur on her chest and stomach was almost bleached white from long hours of sunbathing. The queen had bright golden eyes that crossed slightly as she focused in on the mare, sniffing as her long tail twitched curiously.
On her front paws were two uneven socks, her right only covering her small soft toes, the other past her wrist; she let out a little mrew to say hello as she sniffed around the stall.
She was a large cat, especially for her young age; the mare always thought she was a tom, noting that they were always much bigger than their queens. She had small little tufts of fur on the top of her ears, and a very cute set of pink lips that matched her little nose,
Usually when the mare tried to say hello to the cats, they'd spook and skitter out of the way, scared of being stepped on by her large hooves; but Nermal was careful with her steps, never putting a foot down if she wasn't confident in the placement. She nickered kindly to the cat, who mewed and came close enough to smell the mare, hopping up onto her back and kneading own a place to lay down; Nermal liked this new feeling, even though it sometimes hurt. She laid happily, listening to the maine coon purr and purr the hour away; leaving before Hunter woke up to feed the horses.
It had been nearly a week since Nermal had last seen the young cat, and she was beginning to worry about her; curiously she left her stall, which was left open since today was an off day. The stable was connected to a large pasture and assuming the mares had been good and kind to each other, they were freely turned out. She had grazed for a while until she was tired of the action, played with some of the other horses and bothered the dogs, who chased them back and forth.
As she walked back into her stall, she noticed the cat standing on the platform; she nickered hello and brought her nose close; the kitty bumping her with her head in return. Nermal was glad that she made a new friend, especially with a kitty. She made her way into the stall and laid down as the cat jumped down, mewing and purring as she cuddled up to the mare, where they slept for the night; neither of them woke as Hunter came through to give everyone their supper and lock their stalls.
Then, something Nermal wasn't prepared for happened. She woke up to the cat meowing, strained and tired sounding; Nermal pulled her head up and saw that the little maine coon had eight little kittens all around her tummy; nursing while their mother cleaned them. Nermal lightly nickered and sniffed at them, watching as the queen moved her full attention to one of the kittens. It looked different than the rest, its mouth looked strange. Nermal nickered calmly again, noting to herself that it was coming to feed time; she hoped Hunter would notice and help.
And help, that man did.
He had a vet called immediately, checking over each little kitten as he waiting for her to arrive; watching how the mare would softly blow warm air onto each little kitten and give them a soft, loving lick on each little head she could, including the mothers, and almost Hunter's. Almost.
The vet had come in slowly, cooing a hello to the strange group before Hunter lightly picked up the different kitten; Nermal watched her frown a bit, saying something about "cleft lip" and then reassuring to Hunter, the mother, and poor scared Nermal that each kitten was healthy, and the runt would be as well; explaining to Hunter about different procedures they could go through, knowing he wasn't going to give up on the kitten.
The little kitten looked a lot different than his mother, fur mainly a soft faded orange colour with white all over him; neck and belly, around his eyes and the tip of his tail. Nermal thought she saw white on his paws but she wasn't immediately sure; the vet had him hidden in her blue gloved hands.
It had been almost a year an the little queen, who was recently spayed, still came around to say hi to Nermal, mewing as her kitten, who Nermal named Gift, jumped up and played with his "aunt's" mane and tail. Gift now had his mothers signature ear tufts, though they were longer and even started to weigh themselves down a bit, the fur flopping outward. He had kept those pretty blue kitten eyes even as he grew; the big curious orbs would flick and watch everything with such an intense wonder and amazement. Nermal was happy with her big, kitty family.
(ps I hope you enjoy the punny show name lol)
