Kalons-- a species with soft manes and even softer hearts.
Monitored in forests across the globe for years, these animals
have recently been declared naturally tame as well as sentient.
Scientists are asking the general population to consider adopting
Kalons for further study in their capabilities of intelligence.

"I'm sorry. I just don't think I can."
Waves beckoned, urged. Stirred, spurred and swayed, pleaded her to keep on pushing forward.
Prydwen's legs fell heavy and twinged with ache, movements sloppy and weary. From some
immeasurable distance off which felt like planets away, her friends leaped, soared in the pool
with all so much ease, kicking up water in the summery haze. Giggling and jeering, with a twang
of condescension. They made it seem so painfully simple, a struggle so harsh for her.
"Come now! You need some help there? Can't you swim?"
One stroke. Two strokes. Glide.
How could they not be the slightest bit fearful of the deep? The fathomless, merciless blue?
One stroke. Two strokes. Glide.
Inky and gloomy, sharp and biting cold? It's tight, raw, dragging hold?
One stroke. Two strokes. Glide.
To at last swim- could it and would it be so bold?
It was this as a kit for well- forever, and a day. A very long time.
Lessons, day in, day out. In the pool, out of the pool. The sun would roll over, much too bored
of watching the same scene play, alike to a movie on relentless repeat. To deem herself worthy
and prove that she could tackle the wall of water was her absolute priority. Feeling oh so woebegone
didn't appeal to Prydwen.
The koi; a symbol of advancement, and determination.
Goggles fixed for war and donned with armband armor, the water fleeted in retreat, tucking itself
away at the sight and will of this soldier.
They say, that perhaps with such a shine, it was all kinds of fate and destiny all along. The koi may
be just a fish, but she stood in the name of it's vast regalia and earned well fortune, in the gift of
learning to dance with the ocean.

[The Goddess of Fish]
As a young kit, Hina was born into a ravishished city. Her parents,
sacrificed themselves, to make sure that Hina grew up to be strong and
healthy. But, things didn't turn out that way.
Hina was weak, very frail, and easyly shaken by stress on her body. Hina's
parents took her to doctors, physicians, herbalists, pleading for help. All
of them, gave Hina the same diagnosis, the same fate. Living in pain,
and dying at a young age. Hina was diagnosed with Rheumatic heart disease,
being fatal. They as mother and father cried and mourning for their daughter.
But they never told her. With the tears in their eyes and smiles on their faces,
they told Hina...
"You're strong, you'll live, you'll grow to be something that no one will ever
be. Because your our little fish..."
She believed. A spirit awoken in her. Hope filled their hearts. Was this
what they needed all along? Asking the Koi fish themselves was the best
chance they had.
Hina's Father, took her on a long trip. The mother stayed at home, wishing
for her return. Her parents often told her stories of Koi Gods, living in hidden
ponds. Sometimes, they answered, healing kalons from sin, or sickness. Her
father showed Hina a sacred water pond filled with Koi fish. Hina's Father
walked with her to the water's edge, where he prayed to them. He waited.
Hina began to increasingly grow weak, falling into eternal sleep. He father
asked her to sing the song that was in her heart. She whispered songs sung
by that of the Koi fish. The waters glowed, fins rose from the water, with
he glow of the waters growing brighter. A Koi fish swam to the bank.
'Come...' it whispered.
The father grabs his daughter's scuff in his mouth, and swims out to the middle
of the pond. He let Hina sink into the water. Hina's Father took her burden
(trading conditions), and gave Hina his strength. Koi fish swam around Hina,
giving her blessings from her father, and of the spirit of the Koi fish. But with
this, came with a cost. Only Hina returned home...
Hina swore her life to protect the power of legendary Koi fish. She acts as
they're guardian. The fish's blessings were painted onto Hina's Pelt, and giving
her a sacred shine, resembling her father's sacrifice and the Koi fishes' power.

the rain slowly ran down the roof of the old, traditional style home,
landing with force on the hair of the person below. With their tea in
their hands, and their bangs framing their face, they welcomed the
cold rain. kohaku brushed the damp locks out of his eyes, exposing
the tired eyes of a weary young man. letting out a sigh, he abandoned
his tea so he could take a seat on a bench among the rain. kohaku
held the bag in his hands, the rain falling off of it with great care into
the water below. he glanced at the clear water, his eyes softening as
the small fish began to emerge with his presence. he bent his knees
beneath his legs and sat near the edge of the pool, his hands absentmindedly
undoing the tie on the bag. the fish excitedly swirled beneath the bag,
anxiously awaiting for the food to fall into their mouths. a shadow
appeared in the water as it loomed over kohaku's back.
"father, why are you here.. i told you to stay away from me."
kohaku growled, the fish scattering in the water beneath him. his father
sighed, his eyes as tired as his son's.
"we want you to come home, your siblings need you."
he winced as kohaku snapped a fish pellet in half,
"i can't go back to that house. not after what happened to mother."
his father sighed, seeming to look years older as his son fought against
him.
"very well... your mother was just like you, stubborn and proud. always loved these fish too."
kohaku froze, his mind slowly filling up with the falling rain.
"i remember.. she took you here when you were just a little boy.. you loved it."
kohaku's eyes filled with water, his hands shaking vigorously
"she would be proud of you now, coming here again."
the bag hit the ground, the sound filling their ears. kohaku bolted forward,
capturing his father in a great embrace as his hot tears poured onto the ground
below them.

The water was frozen over - it was a cold, unforgiving winter. He clu
ng to his mother's arm, holding close to her as the two walked throug
h the dark world to get home. A tiny voice was heard, "Mommy, look.
..", and the child pulled away one of his arms to point at the sky, slow
ly speaking, "Snow." She laughed for a second and ruffled his hair, but
spoke no other words. "Mommy, what happens to the fish in winter? D
o they hide under the ice?", he spoke once again, looking up at his mo
ther and once again pointing, this time to the frozen over pond that la
y near their home, the one that they quickly approached. "Ah, of cour
se, little one! The hide under the ice to put on their spring colors, and
then once spring comes around, they'll melt the ice to show their new
colors off.", She laughed a little at the child who tugged at her arm an
d clung to her as the two came to their door, his eyes still back on the
pond. "I can't wait for spring to come around, then."
---
Musingly, he would stare now, in a way that most would find strange,
almost obsessive. He looked out to the algae-green pond which still sa
t far from his home but close enough that he could see the slight mov
ement of the fish. If he was lucky, he could see their shimmering colo
rs through the blue-green water in the day. When the sky grew dark, h
e was happy to merely stare in it's direction and glimpse the littlest m
otion. He worried his family with his musings. He could hardly focus o
n anything, barely spent time away from their tiny balcony from whic
h he could just barely see the pond. It was growing close now - the ti
me that he would have to leave his home, everything that he had ever
known, to train away to be something he could never be. But he didn't
spend his time worrying over the nothings that were beyond the town.
---
It was hard to be where he was, now. He hated the bare, beige walls th
at surrounded him everywhere he went. He couldn't escape this, not thi
s time. But still, from his window he could just barely spot it - just a gli
mpse of a blue-green shade that held everything he wanted.
He could see out the window and remember home.

rolling and crashing sounds of the elegant ocean always seemed to draw Kamarah toward the breathtaking water. She adored the feeling of the soft waves lapping at her paws. She loved to stretch out on the warm beach sand and daydream endlessly about the adventures and thrills the sea held. Many nights she found herself gazing upon the moonlit water, desperately aching to explore and navigate the endless enchanted oceans. Kamarah's parents forbade it, however. They were wealthy Kalons; known well throughout the populated island they lived on. They expected her to carry on their legacy. Kamarah's life seemed to be meticulously planned out for her; she would grow up happily and wealthily within her region, marry another wealthy kalon, accumulate a boring job, and live a simple life. Kamarah knew she wasn't destined for that posh life, however. She could never shake the feeling- she just didn't belong.
As time went on, Kamarah began to hear stories of heroic pirates that roamed the open seas. She immediately took an interest in the lore, and gradually Kam became fully obsessed with the idea of sea mythology and pirates.
Her family despised the idea of living a musty, pillaging pirate lifestyle. They viewed it as incredibly unladylike and unappealing; Kam saw the opposite. The freedom and adventure beckoned to her constantly- she needed to get out there. But how?
Then everything shifted.
One warm summer morning, when the morning sun hit the waves perfectly and caused sunlight to stray in all directions, a large ship was spotted off the coast of the island.
A large koi figurehead had been engraved into the front of the ship and a distinct pirate flag flapped innocently in the wind.
Kam’s breath hitched in her throat as she gazed at it; she glanced down into the water’s reflection and her own koi shine caught her eye. Now THAT'S a weird coincidence...how can I ignore a sign like that?
Courage and exhilaration rose in Kam’s chest as she quickly glanced between the boat and her town. Should I go for it? Can I really bear to leave this all behind?
Before she could think it over twice, Kamarah splashed into the water to chase her fate. (371/400)
