The Hour Before Sunrise
The sky is a deep, dark indigo. Shadows reign, and even with her heightened eyesight, Lilo has a hard time discerning objects from silhouettes. The chatter of those nocturnal was quieting down and soon stillness would sweep in, creeping softly yet quickly like mist and fog. A few frogs stubbornly kept to their cries, sonorous yet high pitched. The multitude of stars in the sky were also beginning to dim, not as strong as their nightly companion the moon. The moon’s soft face was still turned to the earth below, somehow seeming to glow brighter with each moment.
Her brightening face brought with it the brightening sky, lighter shades of cerulean steadily being painted and mixed onto the indigo base. Few stars clung to the remaining night sky, their sweet twinkling light steadily being winked away. Even the frogs have quieted, and stillness reigns supreme. The silence would not last very long, Lilo knew, as soon birds would pick up where the frogs had left off. But for the moment, she would let the silence sweep over her as well, leaving her alone with only her steadfast breathing.
Each exhale billowed out in soft puffs of steam, the air crisp and chill, almost sweet. It seeps into her bones and radiates into her being, uncomfortable for some but comfortable to Lilo. It encourages her own stillness, bundled into a warm and cozy ball. The smell of petrichor is heavy despite the lack of rain, but dewdrops cover every blade of grass and every flower petal in sight. There is no rush, no stress, no urge to go out and do other things. Just peaceful stillness.
The stillness does not last long. As predicted, a cacophony of chirps and whistles begin to harken the coming sun, permeating the air with lively song. The sky is now almost bright, but shadows still blanket the earth. In the hour before sunrise, when the sky is still dark yet brightening, where sound is silence before crescendoing to fanfare for the coming dawn, everything is peaceful. When the first rays of the sun breach the horizon and dawn is officially upon her, Lilo’s favorite time of day comes to a close.
